"People, she said, can learn to mimic the pant and use it to invite their pets to frolic or to try to calm an irritated animal."

I don't know, if I was an irritated carnivore, and someone started laughing at me....

This is probably the 3rd related article submitted on this topic on Fark in the past week. It's basically the same article but cited by 3 different news sources.

It's not a laugh it's "like a "breathy exhalation"

as opposed to those breathless exhalations.

The real question is not wether they laugh or not, but what their jokes are!

My dog laughed, like to play tricks on me and hated me playing tricks on him, so what's new?

I had a cat that would turn her back on you and 'humph' her shoulders if you didn't do what she wanted.

Only idiots and christians believe that animals have fewer emotions than we do.

2001-08-12 04:27:10 PM
Dog laugh: "ha ha ha! My owner is so funny. And that's why I love you."

Cat laugh: "ha ha ha! My owner is such a moron. And that's why I hate you."

I know how to make a dog laugh: "Hey boy, Attack of the Clones."

Shoot me.

2001-08-12 08:09:31 PM
O.K., don't laugh at me......O.K., go ahead and laugh...anyhoo, I have three dogs and if I sniff at them in their ears, the way dogs sniff (no, not the crotch area, silly!), they attack me like snoopy!! I am knocked over and they stand on me, looking down at me, with their ears drooping forward. It is hysterical!! I beleive dogs have a sense of humor, as well as other "human" emotions. My oldest dog turns his back on me if he doesn't get his way. He also holds grudges....the little poop. But he's my poop, and I love him.

Another crap article

2001-08-12 11:06:18 PM
A breathy exhalation as a form of communication attemping to elicit a particular type of behavior somehow equates to laughter as we humans know it? I think not. I blame Walt Disney (although I don't think he intended it) for the generation of people who have grown up thinking that animals think, communicate and feel just like we do. I don't believe it for a minute. Certainly some are smarter than others and are capable of quite complex behaviors, but abstract thought is out of their league. Animals know, humans know that they know.

A newly discovered chapter in the Book
of Genesis has provided the answer to

"Where do pets come from?"

Adam and Eve said, "Lord, when we
were in the garden, you walked with us
every day. Now we do not see you
anymore. We are lonesome here and it
is difficult for us to remember how
much you love us."
And God said, "No Problem! I will
create a companion for you that will
be with you forever and who will be a
reflection of my love for you, so that
you will love me even when you cannot
see me. Regardless of how selfish or
childish or unlovable you may be, this
new companion will accept you as you
are and will love you as I do, in
spite of yourselves."
And God created a new animal to be a
companion for Adam and Eve.
And it was a good animal. And God
was pleased. And the new animal was
pleased to be with Adam and Eve and
he wagged his tail.
And Adam said, "Lord, I have already
named all the animals in the Kingdom
and I cannot think of a name for this
new animal."
And God said, "No problem, because I
have created this new animal to be a
reflection of my love for you, his
name will be a reflection of my own
name, and you will call him DOG."
And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and
was a companion to them and loved
them. And they were comforted. And
God was pleased. And Dog was content
and wagged his tail.
After a while, it came to pass that
an angel came to the Lord and said,
"Lord, Adam and Eve have become
filled with pride. They strut and
preen like peacocks and
they believe
they are worthy of adoration. Dog has
indeed taught them that they are
loved, but perhaps too well."
And God said, "No problem! I will
create for them a companion who will
be with them forever and who will see
them as they are. The companion will
remind them of their limitations, so
they will know that they are not
always worthy of adoration."
And God created CAT to be a companion
to Adam and Eve. And Cat would not
obey them. And when Adam and Eve
gazed into Cat's eyes, they were
reminded that they were not the
supreme beings.

And Adam and Eve learned humility.
And they were greatly improved.

And God was pleased.

And Dog was happy.

And Cat didn't give a shiat one way or
the other.

Witty, Wolfgang.

I speak very good 'Cat', and a pretty good 'Dog'.

So, dogs laugh (duuuhh). They think, have feelings, and a sense of self.

Question: if there's an afterlife, do they survive death? Do they "go on"?

If there's a heaven, dogs go there.

2001-08-13 12:57:11 AM
If you really believe that dogs can laugh, isnt it at least pretty likely that oh, say pigs can laugh, maybe even cows? Eating something with a face doesnt bother me much, but if I really thought pigs could laugh, those bbq ribs I had for supper might back-up on me.

Periboob: Continuing your line of thought, why stop there? Maybe plants, too, have a sense of humor. Do roses chuckle when you prick yourself on a thorn? Do blackberries guffaw when you suffer scratches while trying to pick them? Who knows for sure? I have yet to see any evidence proving that plants have any less self awareness than animals do, despite what some vegi-nazis try to tell you. If dogs can laugh, then willows can truly weep, I say. I don't believe they do, but ...?
