Friend explained that there have been many examples over the years where male officers have been placed on light duty for various illnesses and injuries.

Yeah, but this time it's a girl! That makes it all different, right? Right?

Right ;)

it's more like an STD really. Do the male officers get light duty for syphilis or herpes? if so, then she's got something to complain about.

I thought I was pregnant once. Turns out it was my usual reaction to Taco Bell.

Damn, what a bunch of insensitive assholes at the PD.

I hope the lady gets to go on light duty - even the farkin military will put pregnant people on LLD!! (Light Limited Duty)

I realize everyone loves a good misogyny-thread once in a while, but seriously: she's pregnant, how do you expect her to chase bad guys and eat donuts? She can't really do her job, they should make accommodations.

I think if I were in her position, I'd take the unpaid leave and get a desk job somewhere else in the meantime. It was her choice to get pregnant. Taxpayers shouldn't have to pay so she can sit at a desk and shred documents for 7 months.

Bob Falfa: Welcome to equal rights. Now go register for the draft.

I agree with your statement.

I dont understand why its so hard for women to accept that we are not completely equal to men. Men are, for the most part, stronger. If im about to get mugged by 2 big men with guns to my head the last thing I would want to see rescuing me is a tiny woman that couldnt even take them down with a taser. Same with firemen. If a 300lb fatty is burning building on the 20th floor a skinny woman isnt gonna get the guy out. Im sorry, shes not.

Women are not meant to be cops or firemen or any of the sort. Men are generally the stronger sex and we have to shut up and deal with it.

Well, I guess next time someone complains about minor pay discrepancies/hiring imbalances we can point to this story as the reason why eliminating all inequality for groups that are fundamentally, physically different may not be as bright an idea as previously thought.

//Similarly, y'all can thank the right to work lobby for the fact that the occupational radiation exposure limit for unborn children is 5x that of the general public. Setting it any lower than the average exposure for an adult radiation professional would be unfair discrimination against female workers, you see. Not that the limit's too high (if anything, the 'general public' exposure limit is set to an amazing arbitrary low) but you still have a rule that makes no damned sense.

I would bet my left nut pregnant women excel at eating donuts.

Yes, and a healthy dose of stairs is the cure.

*Warning, side effects may involve a broken neck, loud screaming, and a scratched bannister. Take only if needed.

I have to agree with the department. She isn't qualified for the desk jobs they have available and it shouldn't be a requirement for them to create a brand new position that serves no purpose simply so she can continue to get paid while being unable to work.

If she has whatever certifications or credentials were required for the light positions they had available and still denied her request I'd be on her side, but it sounds more like a case of her wanting them to give her a job other than one she is qualified for simply because she's pregnant.

I'm serious. If you are in a serious situation like getting mugged in the subway by a group of big gang members, do you really think a woman can demand enough respect from them to save you? She cant fight them if they start some shiat.

2008-05-06 11:38:50 PM
All joking and knee-jerking aside, I don't see why more new fathers don't request "light duty" or paternity leave for the first few month's of their kids' lives.

Blame women all you want for the inequality, but really it's because men haven't organized and demanded such things.

devine: Pregnancy is an illness or injury?

For the purposes of reasonable accommodation, a pregnancy is to be treated the same way as any temporary disability, and an employer should do its best to accommodate a pregnant woman in the same way an injured employee would be.

What rubs me about this situation is that she's only two months pregnant. Yes, she got a doctor's note asking her to go on light duty... still..

That's a really big assumption you're making there. I know some really tiny men who are cops, along with some rather large women.

If training were standardized and everyone kept to the same requirements then it wouldn't be an issue. But they're not, and so it is.

I don't care whether or not someone's got an innie or an outie when they come to save my ass from a fire, provided they can carry me out of the damn building if need be.

I've heard of men taking paternity leave for a couple of months. Someone did that at my old job.

Most large corporations give leave for both men and women when the wife gets pregnant. Even if the woman does not work for the company.

Just sayin

2008-05-06 11:42:25 PM
Sounds like an excellent opportunity for a neighboring jurisdiction to hire an experienced and highly decorated officer who will be ready for active duty in less than a year.

2008-05-06 11:42:32 PM
This is the problem with putting women in male oriented occupations. If she was an office worker, no problem, keep on trucking. But now she's got a baby otw and you CAN'T expect her to put her baby at risk of injury on the road (no sarcasm, I'm being serious...baby == valuable)

So....now you have to accomodate her.

8 months light duties == 8 months of doing fark all and getting paid for it

6+ months of maternity leave = 50 to 75% wage for sitting on her duff

At least 1 month after she returnes of sitting around while she requalifies for all he use of force options/other mandatory training she's missed.

= 15 months with a squad/platoon being short one officer, whose spot won't be filled because she MIGHT come back; so on paper, they're fully staffed.

= less available time off for other coworkers who now have an increased work load

And that's with one female officer. Imagine two.

And yet, if a male officer tore his ACL playing in a softball game, which he CHIOSE to do, I bet you the farm they'd find light duty for him while he recouped.
