It's blocked here as well, but a movie that I definitely wanted to see as a kid was Heavy Metal. I was in 3rd grade IIRC and thought it was going to be kind of like the animated LOTR movies, which I thought were cool back then. So I'm begging my mom to let me see it. And she wouldn't.

Then I get the VHS version in college and realize why she wouldn't. And..... my wife got rid of my VHS. Has it hit DVD yet?

Loved the Titanic poster. "Nothing could come between them."

The Memento one got me to LOL.

I could just picture myself as an 8 year old, coming to the logical conclusion that the movie doesn't make since because the DVD is broken and is skipping around.

Yes Pinky... but who would want to? Once you get past enjoying the shock value, the movie is rather awful. The only high-points of the film were John Candy's narration and the coked-out aliens flying while high. The rest of the film was just unwatchable.

Well, yes. But that's part of what made it fun, in a campy sort of way. Plus it's got a nostalgia thing going for it. Always wanted it as a kid, now I can. Even though watching it can be incredibly painful, it's still something I want.

/along with the Smiley spaceship. That'd be cool as hell
//Or maybe the Millenium Falcon.
///Hell, why not both?

Martstar: The Monster Squad one was right on the money. That's pretty much the only thing I still remember about that movie.

Thank you! For the life of me I couldn't remember the title because all I could remember was "Wolfman's got nards!!"

/and Ghostbusters library scene made me scared of my basement for a long time afterwords :(

2008-05-05 11:12:44 AM
Man, the library scene in Ghostbusters was one thing, but the scene with the rabbit from Joe Dante's segment of The Twilight Zone Movie? Scarred for life:

Not to mention the sister with no mouth (shudders.) Dante is a genius.

I have a coworker who would agree with the "There Really Isn't That Much Blood" poster. I suppose she was expecting a horror film given the title. She also said that the plot was impossible to understand, so it's evident that she hasn't seen much good cinema. Come to think of it, I should loan her my copy of Eraserhead.

Ah well, I should cut her a break. She is a teenage girl after all. And to top it off she has blond hair, so I shouldn't be expecting her to know things.

Pxtl: Well, if the book had been jingoistic propaganda or the world been fascistic the movie might not have stunk. Instead, Paul Verhoeven proves what an idiot he is by making a movie parodying a book he's never even read. What a farking retard.

In ST You couldn't hold office without public service (not necessarily in the army) but that sounds reasonable. The biggest problem these days is the unelected chicken hawk sending the USA to war. In their world Bush wouldn't have any power - ever.

What were people forced to do in the ST world? They weren't even forced to go to war - something our government reserves the right to do. I think the last mandatory thing they had to do was their high-school class on ethics.

Having been (still am?) draftable, I'd prefer the Starship Troopers world.

2008-05-05 12:11:35 PM
Pxtl: Captain Goldfish: Starship Troopers was the greatest movie ever made... until I turned 15 and realized it was a terrible farce. HOWEVER, Dina Meyer still gets naked twice, and THAT is deserving of piles of Oscars.

/Dina Meyer FTW
//The book was better, even though Dizzy Flores is a guy.
///Now where's that VHS?

The director was trying to both make a satire of jingoistic propaganda and an action movie at the same time, and they didn't mix well.

Not to mention that the politics Verhoeven attempted to satirize were the politics that Heinlein held dear in the novel. What a disaster that movie's become since I read the book.

2008-05-05 12:22:14 PM
That Labyrinth one is full of WIN. ::grin:: My friends and I used to refer to that film by the tag: "David Bowie and the Ever-Increasing Codpiece'... it really DOES get bigger in every scene... My mom even noticed it. That was awkward. ;)

/Ah, the 80's. :)

I wouldn't even say that. It seemed that what he was trying to satirize was some idealized facist regime, much closer to something from 1984 than ST. Heinlein seemed to want a responsible, concerned citizenry. Aside from that, there was much freedom for anyone. Do whatever you want to do, but without some sort of service (which could definitely be non-military), you couldn't vote. That's pretty much it.

gunga galunga: SilentStrider: I gotta agree with the Ghostbusters one. That library scene farked me up big time when i saw it the first time.

I'd place the Large Marge scene from Pee Wee Herman over that one. In a movie called Ghostbusters, you expect something that to happen. With Pee Wee Herman, there was not one kid out of a thousand who expected to be hit with...

For April Fools' Day my sophomore year, I replaced my roommate's desktop one morning with Large Marge... in 1600x1200 glory. Scream woke up the guys next door. Man it was glorious.

The island full of crashed zombie pilots was pretty scary the first time I saw it. Laughed my ass off during the trial scene "Shootin's too good for him, hangin's too good for him, he should be cut into little pieces and BURNED ALIVE"

2008-05-05 02:45:04 PM
I encountered Large Marge in high school and she still traumatized me.

The only other thing I took away from that movie was Pee Wee's comment on the fear and uncertainty of following your dreams:

"Everyone I know has got a big but".

I don't disagree with your opinion of the chicken hawk, but he unfortunately WOULD have been electable in the Starship Troopers world, as he did serve in the National Guard (new window).

Ah, Hannover Fiste and Captain Sternn. One of Bernie Wrightsons' best creations imho. And it's "Hanging's too good for 'im, burning's too good for 'im, he should be torn up into itty bits and pieces and buried alive.

I long for a world where someone doesn't twist a FARK thread into their platform for their hatred for Bush.

PS: Bush did serve in the National Guard. His quality of service has already been discussed to death in other, more relevant, threads.

Watership Down. You see a movie and think it's about bunnies. Then they all die. Horribly.

Kind of like Titanic, except that you're not rooting for the characters to die.

Given that I saw the movie when I was about 13, I think the poster that I'd hoped to see was the one for "Stripes", but retitled "I Wish I Was A Loofah".

Maybe the war's just a little thing to you and so you wish we'd all stop harping on about it, but get the fark over yourself.

Besides, you're a partisan troll, you only whine when people bash *your* president.
