AirForceVet: I liked the survey next to the story, until I realized they didn't include elderly drivers.

Which of the following Florida animals scares you the most?

AirForceVet: Considering I lived in FL as a kid with alligators (swam with some too), sharks (lovely diving with predators), snakes (stepped on rattlesnakes twice while bare-footed), spiders (lost count how many times I walked into huge banana spider webs in the long leaf pine forests), and roaches (try waking up with one on your face), the list was far too incomplete for Florida threats. How about sting rays and flying sturgeons (had recent fatalities there)?

But only FL animal that really scares me is the fresh-water amoebas that eat your brain and can't be stopped once they get established.

Yeah. Naegleria fowleri we just surveyed this little bastard. Scares the crap out of me too. Also, Jesus Christ! I would die if I walked into banana spider webs. No thanks.

Because someone shoved that toy down the alligators throat, didn't they? Insensitive clods.

Roaches. Definitely.

This plus a brazillion. I go hiking in swamps all the time, have been bitten twice by mocs, but damnit I HATE roaches. They scare the crap out of me. Most revolting creature ever.

Yeah, they work harder, make more money than us, it's just not fair. They really frighten me. That and some of them's skin is darkish.

Brain-eating amoebas scare me also.
I recall a news story in the 1970's about a kid who died of that.

Just don't swim or scuba in the still, stagnant lakes around here. They're just nasty anyway. I think spring-fed waters, steams, rivers and the ocean are mostly safe.

/except for the things that will eat you, of course.
//and drowning, too. that's bad.

Always make sure that your children know that BEFORE they run away from the big alligator that wants to EAT them, they should take the time to stop and pick up their toys.

Ack, both! Lived with the father in law for 8 months, both will chase you like they haven't eaten in weeks. Which is a lie, because I used to find skeletons of the lizards that ran all over the walls on the ground. Wifey hit one of the spiders with a stiletto heel shoe and it didn't die. Roach spray won't kill em either.
