Freedom of speech? Good call, submoran; try freedom of the press. It was listed separately in the Constitution to make it absolutely clear that this kind of crap shouldn't be done.

...then again, since this is Australia, the US Constitution doesn't apply.

i knew from the headline it wasnt in the US. had it been, the media blitz would be legendary. and part of me thinks it will happen, and the resulting media blitz still wouldnt incite enough rage from the public to rebel--i think it would create the hugest precedent for information control this country has ever seen and i think our culture is pacified enough to begrudgingly allow it.

/really hope i'm wrong

You may not be wrong, but you're overreacting a little bit.

The correct answer to a civil rights violation isn't open rebellion, it's a lawsuit against the entity or entities who trampled your civil rights. In this case, probably not the police because they had a warrant. But you could likely go after whomever authorized the warrant, if you could establish that it was improperly issued.

If we keep pointing to barely visible rich people and jackbooted thugs and saying "that's the government", it will be.

Maybe the government just wants to know the source so it can see if he knows about more government waste.

I thought the first thing they did when elected to high office in Australia was to fit prison bars on the office windows. Saves time.

Remove all Republicans: Maybe the government just wants to know the source so it can see if he knows about more government waste.

Maybe it wants to know the source so it can put him at the top of the list of "insurgents" to be executed when the New World Order comes out of the closet.

But English common law does, and freedom of the press has been in there since before the US constitution was enacted (it's why there were newspapers/prints in England attacking the government for the revolutionary war)

... And not a single police officer stood up and refused to carry out the order on the basis that it was wrong.

Sad.

Be careful America! We need to protect ALL of our rights - even the ones that are unpopular. Otherwise we'll end up like this.

2008-05-01 08:49:03 AM
This, my foreign farkers, is why we Americans have firearms: to keep our government in its place.

That is all.

Both the editor of the newspaper and the journalists' union, the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance, have condemned the raid as an attack on free speech.

The newspaper in question says this is a violation of free speech.

Subby's only mistake is "freedom of speech" v "freedom of the press".

The US Constitution applies to Australians just as much as it applies to Americans. So it's OK for Americans to be outraged over this. Australians, who don't recognize the US Constitution as one of their governing devices, not so much.

2008-05-01 01:17:57 PM
Prior restraint is a biatch. Glad I live in the U.S. where newspapers don't bother to cover issues of importance and instead concentrate their efforts on the "lifestyle" section.

It's also worth mentioning that Australia does not actually have a set-in-stone guarantee to free speech (a la the First Amendment or the UK's Charter of Rights and Freedoms). Most of their speech rights come from a single court decision.

After reading the headline, then the article, I'm relieved this wasn't more of Joe Arpaio's shenanigans.

Yeh, its pretty disgusting over here when it comes to the relationship between government and people.

I hope they really get roasted over this. Im not big on the idea of people "leaking" info for their own good, but for what reason would this need to be surpressed? Its not a matter of security at all. Shouldn't even need a leak, should be more visibility in the first place.
