So far my favorite thing about this game is how the wreck damage is done. You can get flung out the window but so long as you don't land on your head and neck you have a good chance of surviving. However, if you are, say, driving a motorcycle, even at believe top speed, and get close lined by something hard you will be dead or almost dead (I haven't seen if the helmet actually helps yet). The damage seems to be based less on how far your are flung and how fast you are going and more on where the damage falls on the character, which is awesome. I have a friend die from going top speed on a motorcycle, sliding into a turn and slamming at pretty much top speed sideways into a wall. This wouldn't be a big deal in other GTAs, it wouldn't even dismount you, but it seems the game recognized that his entire right leg had just been crushed between a heavy machine going 80+MPG and a concrete wall.

I agree. I think it is crazy that you can't use the normal brakes and turn at the same time.

Yes all my Burnout Paradise City driving skills I honed are now hurting me.

Sadly, I'm playing it on a regular TV. However, I'm absolutely LOVING this game. It's been a while since I've played the older versions of GTA. I'd forgotten how much fun it is to explore all the little jokes hidden around. The bowling alley sign cracked me up.

VERY impressive new physics engine. Love the added gore. The driving takes some getting used to.

Can't wait until I'm done with work. Four day weekend and fiancee is working/has plans each day.

Oh and does driving at dangerous speeds under the el train remind anyone else of The French Connection?

Call me crazy, but I have to believe that the cell phone issue will solve itself later in the game. When Roman gives you the phone, he says "maybe someday you will have top of the line phone like me, then you will have really made it!"

This led me to believe that you will get better and better phones as the game progresses, perhaps the phone is hard to read now because it's *supposed* to be a shiatty phone.

Whats up with the PS3 multiplayer? Ive been having troubles with it.

Have you guys gotten together online yet?

My PSN network tag is AnthoAmick...

I bought it at launch... Played it for a few hours in single player mode. Tonight I plan to fool around with the multi-player part for a few hours.

I haven't actually tried it yet....but I will hopefully give it a go tonight at some point....though when I turned on the PS3 yesterday to start playing, I had a message saying the "PSN was down at the moment, try logging in again later". Not sure if that had anything to do with it.

I've only done the first few missions, and what I don't like is that Roman's car drives like crap.

So I steal a better car before a mission, and after the cutscene, my improved car disappears!

I know the game is called "Grand Theft Auto", but come on! Please reward gamers who show foresight and initiative.

I would reckon that it's going to be a case of "you get what you pay for." We shall see, but I have a feeling that there will be some growing pains for the PSN with this game. Have they had to handle the potential load this game will bring for any other game yet?

I figured something was up, mostly the vaguery of being from "the Midwest". Although the accent is pretty convincing, it actually made me a bit homesick as I've been away from Indiana in Massachusetts and my accent has become fairly noticible.

Found an even better game than GTA -- JFP. The protagonist lives in a high-rise apartment in Atlanta and drives a BMW. I played for about three hours yesterday (spoilers ahead) and discovered the following:

-- Mensa member
-- Got an 8.9 rating on "Hot or Not"
-- Likes to pose naked in front of a mirror and flex (kinda gross actually).

One drawback -- the character goes to the gym every 26 minutes.

Probably. I would log in and go to start deathmatch or something, then id get a meesage saying "this game doesnt exist". Ill give it a shot tonight too. Hopefully its resolved.

I hear XBOX live has a lot of lag problems what with no dedicated servers and such. Get what you pay for, eh?

For a GTA game, I haven't killed that many people.

/Cops are no joke

/Haven't found any weapons just lying around, I barely got a pistol.

/Multiplayer needs some work IMO, the gametypes are interesting, but for the player setup, they should have taken a note from saints row (saints row had an awesome character customization features.

/the right part of my screen is cropped so I can't see the 1st star

/Aiming in saints row seemed better/easier.

/I'm looking forward to saints row 2 as well, GTA 4 is a lot more serious game, so saints row should bring the over the top action (it has flamethrowers now :P)

the hidden game, that you can play with other online players borders on obscene. however. i must admit, it was hotter than most things. i just hate to use the paddle buttons left and right like that. but it fits my perverse nature, i cant wait till Jack Thompson sees this one, its wWAYyyyy past hot coffee.

I haven't played the game online yet, so I wouldn't know. I was merely throwing theories out there, it seemed inevitable that a free service would experience problems with its first major online game in the console's life, they all do. My Wii exhibited the same problems with SSBM online for the first week or so, so I just was guessing at the reasons for seeing such problems.

I am not a console fanboy, I just have not had a reason to drop the money on a PS3, please direct your nerd rage elsewhere, I was simply hypothesizing.

/FWIW I have 360, Wii, Ps2, PSP, DS, and multiple PCs - and that's only counting systems that are hooked up to something and played.

TMBGfreak: The driving is much more like real life. In order to maintain control, you have to brake before going into a turn then accelerate through the turn.

Indeed. A couple other things I noticed about braking:

1) Most cars in the game as in real life understeer heavily if you're braking. This is true in real life, too. You can learn to tap the E-brake to overcome this, but it's easy to end up spinning if you do. Better to just slow down and take the turns wide.

2) If you're going really fast, especially in cars with soft suspensions (minivans, trucks, SUVs, etc.), your brakes will not work or will be more likely to skid if you're going over a bump and your suspension is unloaded. Again, VERY VERY realistic!

3) I'm not sure, but I think some vehicles have ABS and some don't.

The handling of all the vehicles varies widely. Also, they have really different masses (reflected in the ability to push things out of the way), like the Hummer rip-offs.

Nunpoo: caltobello: I agree the game is dark. Upped the brightness and contrast as well. The phone right now is my biggest complaint. I have a 52" DLP and it is really hard to read. The words should be on a white background. This would help alot.

Other wise I LOVE IT!!

You can make the cell phone text larger by selecting "options" in the cell phone menu.

The radar is way too small. I wish there was an option to double it in size.

This is the reason you were looking for to buy a new $3k TV and tell the wife/parents about the "problem" later.

You're welcome.

Haha I preempted your post with a time-warped apology. Nice. And yeah, you're probably right on the glitches to work out, and hopefully they'll be all fixed by the time I've had enough single player exploration time, which should be a good while now!

Disarming that dude with the knife seems weird. The combat mode seems weird, altered somehow in a bad boundary box way. Why do I freaking keep stabbing the ground? Is this guy dead yet and just has no money?

I initially thought "cop", but based on looking at the dating site at the web cafe, I'm now thinking that Michelle is the witness protection program chick whose profile shows up.

Good Stuff:
1) The body physics. Popped the guy on the high perch in the first little Jakob mission, he stumbled and dropped two stories into a dumpster. I cracked up the first time I slammed my car into a pole and Niko flew out through the windshield.
2) Dialing 911 on the cell to get the cops to show up so you can jack their car.
3) The new wanted escape system. Losing the cops by clever hard driving or ducking into an alley is much cooler than driving over stars.
4) Taxi cab system is a cool touch. Takes the hurt out of wandering around town to gather things up; before the mission at the Russian supper club, I snagged a taxi to the gun shop and grabbed another one to return.
5) The cover shooting system. Had fun on one of the LJ missions shooting through a swinging door from cover- when the door would eventually swing shut, I'd hit it with a round to throw it open again so I could target inside.

Irked By:
-Took a cab to the restaurant on a date with Michelle. Hit 'x' button to skip the drive. When we got to the restaurant, the message "You scared Michelle" popped up and she took off. Not sure if that's a bug, or if they're trying to keep you from getting through the date too fast.
-Targeting is still a little weird when you're in close. Getting better with the new system, but still not sure if it's that much better than the old target system.
-Darkness. I too have had to jack the brightness and contrast up. Makes destinations in the cab hard to read as a result.

I'm playing it on a 12' projected image on my living room wall. The projector cost me $1200. Do yourself a favour and get one from costco then return it.

The game is a little dark, which is exacerbated on a projector. This forces me to play at night and do something with my life during the day.

I've picked a great time to be unemployed. Thank you, GTA4.

I didn't hear that one yet. "The Men's Room" is hosted by Bas and Jeremy (something-or-other). I didn't catch his last name, but it's not Horn. Could be the same guy though.

The shows are hilarious though. I laughed my head off.
