(National Review)   If Jeremiah Wright were white, do you think anyone would have let him explain how blacks have rhythm because they're "right brained" without being forced out of public life?   (corner.nationalreview.com) divider line 548

Being white, and having gone out dancing with black friends during my college career- it might be the one thing that Mr. Wright and I could agree on.

2008-04-30 09:47:51 AM
No, I don't. But since he isn't white, what's the point of the question?

2008-04-30 09:54:25 AM
If Jeremiah Wright were white, would he be in the news in the first place?

2008-04-30 09:55:52 AM
White people are left-brained, black people are right-brained, and Rev. Wright is pea-brained.

2008-04-30 09:56:52 AM
Did you ever notice that white people have names like Lenny whereas black people have names like Carl?

2008-04-30 09:59:27 AM
Cut the guy some slack. At least he didn't mention basketball or rims.

2008-04-30 10:00:22 AM
White people spent decades and decades exagerrating and exploiting what they perceived as black peoples' shared characteristics. I think it's okay that some other races are getting a chance to give it back to us.

If Reverend Wright were white, he'd be Reverend John Hagee.

/FWIW, as a white guy, I have to agree with him on the rhythm thing at least as far as I am concerned.
//my wife concurs as well

In short, Wright's speech on black-right brainers, white-left brainers - replete with bogus stereotypes and crude voice imitations - was about as racist as they come and at one time antithetical to what the NAACP was once all about.

Yep, it's a shame too.

Again, the Obama campaign and its appendages have set back racial relations a generation.

This isn't really the "Obama campaign" -- I'm sure Obama would prefer Wright to STFU and get out of the media spotlight.

Could someone please link me to the part of Rev. Wright's speech where he suggested a genetic difference?

I am sure that the 'quotes' around 'genetic' in this article must mean that they are quoting Rev. Wright directly.

LawTalkingGuy: White people spent decades and decades exagerrating and exploiting what they perceived as black peoples' shared characteristics. I think it's okay that some other races are getting a chance to give it back to us.

Different groups DO have shared cultural characteristics, all Wright said was that these differences are not deficiencies. Northern blacks, citizens from Boston and people from Minnesota all speak American English but they all have different accents and there's nothing wrong with that.

The "what if he were white???" equivalence isn't "Him being white, talking about black people."

No, the equivalent situation would be "Him being white, talking about WHITE people," which you'll note all of the pundits and the other candidates have had no problem whatsoever doing for the past umpteen months. Notice the outrage over "Bittergate?" That was because Obama was "elitist" by daring to speak about a group (rural white Pennsylvania voters) that he doesn't belong to. The other candidates sure were sensitive to the boundary issues then, weren't they?

It's outsider/insider, that's it. I can make jokes about my family, but you can't.

The willful obtuseness on this particular concept (which by no means started with this election cycle) continues to amuse me.

let's be honest...this is all just more of the Politics of Distraction Obama was talking about.

God forbid we focus our attention on, I don't know, rising gas prices, falling dollar values, the war in Iraq, the deficit, the home crisis, the various food crises around the world...

...no, no, Clearly Jeremiah Wright's opinions are so important they deserve yet another 50,000 inches of column space and another 500-comment thread.

Jeremiah Wright would not be worth one inch of column space if Obama would have throw him under the bus at the get go. However Obama has waited till now to do it. One of three things is going on: 1) Obama has no ability to judge people (He knew the guy for 20 years if he only went to church once a month that is 240 visits) 2) Obama does not have a problem with what is being said (Obama says that this is not true) 3) Obama is dumb enough to believe that no one would look into his past.

Pick anyone you want they all equal a very naive (and/or stupid) man. I thought you guys did not want another idiot in the office?

Riiight. It's all Obama. It has NOTHING to do with the media playing 30 second soundbites over and over again to stir up the pot, or the fact that his opponents would rather grab on something flimsy and controversial and run with it, rather than debating the man on the merits of his experience, his ideas and his politics.

Yeah, keep on talking, proving my point.

Incredulous at best your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
Pull your head on out
Your head believes it give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The universe is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive, so it is
So it's always been

We all feed on tragedy
It's like bood to a vampire

Vicariously i, live while the whole world dies
Much better you than i

When building our country and government, if we don't start taking human nature into account and offsetting it through logic....we're done.

They cant do that!!! Hillary and Obama are in lock step with most of the things they are saying! So we have to start "looking at the candidate". Who the candidate choses to surround himself with matters.
Remember Bush and McCain are not Obama's opponents! It's Hillary. The only debate they could have is who is going to give away more, and Obama does not want to have they debate with her cause no one is going to beat her in that. Actually Obama does not want any debate with her.

I really think that once Obama fully denounced him and his comments, it became a non-issue. Prior to that I feel that it was worthy of discussion because it was unclear to what extent Obama agreed with/supported Wright.

This is bullshiat and you know it. There are any number of issues that could be talked about and quite frankly, dredging up crap to satisfy the 24 hours news networks should not be a priority here. We have yet to here any conclusive plans on what to do about the economy or the war. What about policy debates? There's been very little concrete information.

And if McCain isn't an opponent of Obama's, it's certainly news to him...because he's acting like one.

And if who "the candidate surrounds himself with matters," why aren't we addressing why Hillary is still married to Bill, a man who not only embarrassed himself with the Lewinsky fiasco but cheated on her multiples times? Or why McCain is associating with Bush? And Hagee? Why is Obama the only real target here?

Distractions. All it is. "Ignore that man behind the curtain," indeed.

When I first heard that Pastor Jeremiah White threw his WWII medals over the Berlin Wall (to the bad side) a few years ago, I was outraged, but I figured he was owed a modicum of respect as a former fighter pilot. Then, when I heard that he had hired Brother Muzone and Omar Little to be his bodygaurds for his performance at Altamont, I started to get concerned. Now, with his new revelation that white people can't dance, I simply cannot in good conscience recommend Obama be voted in as a first-ballot HOFer. Sometimes it's about more than just numbers.

They never will! You are asking for something that has never and will never happen. You will never get a "conclusive" plan from any of them! Oh you may get a little media tested buzz words but the last guy that promised anything was defeated in part to his inability to keep that promise! Do you understand or do you need to read my lips? Asking them to put anything is stone and you will get the classic "Well, I dont know what I will find when I get there". I would like there plans as well, but until they are in office it is nothing more then smoke and mirrors.

cheshirecatsmileyface: And if McCain isn't an opponent of Obama's, it's certainly news to him...because he's acting like one.

He is the front runner. You dont see the democrats running commercials against Ron Paul do you? But if Obama gets distracted with McCain then Hillary has him. If Hillary starts pulling ahead then the attack adds will target her.

cheshirecatsmileyface: And if who "the candidate surrounds himself with matters," why aren't we addressing why Hillary is still married to Bill, a man who not only embarrassed himself with the Lewinsky fiasco but cheated on her multiples times? Or why McCain is associating with Bush? And Hagee? Why is Obama the only real target here?

On the topic of Bill the media really needs to be careful. They are the ones that defended the guy during the impeachment hearings. They are never going to say they were wrong and it really was terrible and the is scum for doing it! Remember it was all about sex nothing more the a Republican witch hunt. Star is the one that should be on trial. Remember all of that? They cant throw him under the bus without going down with him.
On the topic of McCain. Why waste the ammo now? I believe that most media types would rather see Hillary or Obama over McCain. So save the ammo for whoever has a D by their name.

cheshirecatsmileyface: Distractions. All it is. "Ignore that man behind the curtain," indeed.

Some of it is. If you just focus on what Wright says then it is meaningless. However I am watching how Obama reacts to it all. If Wright is a true ally then he is just throwing him away. If he is not then Obama has been lying from the start and does not have the ability to spin it correctly. If he cant handle the minor leagues then I don't think we should invite him to the Big Show. Before we let him tussle with North Korea lets make sure he can handle ABC.

After watching the entire press club speech, I have come to the following conclusions.

1. As far as I'm concerned, the speech wasn't racy at all.

2. This pastor is getting character assassinated for no reason. As far as I'm concerned, the Jews have no logical claim to Israel and should be removed. His concerns about Aids are legitimate, when considered in light of the Tuskegee experiment.

3. Obama is an absolute idiot for speaking out against him. The very cornerstone of his race speech is now torn down because of his actions.

4. I will still vote for Obama, because as of now, he is the best option available.

/The very fact that these things have an effect on the voting electorate make me cringe..
