if the pope didn't want him to take communion, the pope could have excommunicated him on the spot.

He should have added the "married three times" thing, too. That was my first thought when I saw a different article about this.

Is communion denied to those who do not adhere to the church's stance against capital punishment?

You're not allowed to take communion if you are a regular Catholic that disagrees with one view on one single topic?

Well, then I guess I'm really not allowed to take it.

Well, your Eminence, with all due respect, if you're going to withhold Communion from pro-abortion politicians, then don't invite them to mass. Not even if the Pope is in town.

And of all people, the good Cardinal Egan knows alot about such "understandings."

Like understanding that if you're diddling the kiddies, Egan will play the pedo priest shuffle and make the problem go away.

I'm not saying I would have agreed with it, but that would have been pretty badass. And then see him have his Swiss guard detail drag him out of his sight.

kronicfeld: Is communion denied to those who do not adhere to the church's stance against capital punishment?

No. First, the two are not treated the same way. The short version is that the teaching on capital punishment is "only acceptable in the rarest circumstances where there are no other ways to keep the criminal away from society (e.g. solitary confinement.)" In practice, it's up to the individual to decide if they will support the death penalty. The teaching on abortion, by contrast is simply, "Never." (Though some theologians recognize an implicit exception when the purpose of the abortion is to save the mother's life). Second, just holding a pro-abortion position is not enough (or at least shouldn't be enough) to be denied communion - you need to be in a position of authority (mayor, senator, judge, etc.) and make public statements in support of abortion.

He also has a blood alcohol content of 10%. He really should have stopped turning water to wine a few drinks ago.

MasterThief: Though some theologians recognize an implicit exception when the purpose of the abortion is to save the mother's life

That may be true, but those theologians do not hold the same belief as the catholic church. The church accepts the loss of a fetus as an unintended secondary effect, for example, of a hysterectomy needed to save the life of a mother or surgical removal of an ectopic pregnancy. The church rejects, however, direct abortion as a means to produce a beneficial side-effect to the mother.

Ruca: You're not allowed to take communion if you are a regular Catholic that disagrees with one view on one single topic?

You're not allowed to take communion if you are a public figure who takes a public stance against Catholic doctrine. That being said, most don't give a fark. These are just a bunch of pro-lifers with their fundy panties in a bunch.

Hypocrites.

It was the pope, himself, giving it right? It is the nadir of courtesy and good taste to negatively comment on whom other people welcome to their table.

I assume it's God's table and the pope outranks Egan in presiding over it. Egan should have had the decency to keep his mouth shut.

2008-04-29 11:02:48 AM
His receiving communion wouldn't have been a problem if he had actually won the GOP nomination. The archbishops pick on liberal politicians and celebrities, but won't go after Republicans unless they are out of the race.

2008-04-29 11:02:50 AM
The Catholic Church teaches "that abortion is a grave offense against the will of God," Egan said.

B-b-but, I thought a sin was a sin. Make up your minds. No, better yet, stop trying to be GOD.

So, supporting abortion is bad, but being a grandstanding-scumbag-politico-farktard who leverages the deaths of thousands of people for personal power is a-okay?

I just want to be clear...

Catholics get snippy about you taking communion if you're 'pro-choice', but not if you're pro-ritual-cannibalism.

You'd think that people who claim to follow the teachings of a man who taught through parables would understand what a metaphor is.

No doubt. Ethiopia had a bunch of nomads. And the Italians didn't even gas with shells. They used crop dusters.

The Italians have sucked at war since the fall of Rome.

In addition, Guiliani is guilty of the sin of scandal, as are all Roman Catholic politicians that actively promote abortion.

Just sayin' is all.

There's another one that's similar to scandal that he is doing because he's a public figure, but I can't recall the term.
