So the submitard thinks that we should pump enough troops into Afghanistan to control every square mile of that worthless shiathole, 24x7?

Why does the Taliban keep claiming responsibility for assassination attempts... that fail?

maybe we should stay and get the job done seeing how this actually is a country where the terrorists responsible for 9/11 trained?

Wow thats a flood of what 18 soldiers? You can see the dirt behind them so you can tell where the back of the flood is, and because that one guy on the left is looking directly at the camera, you can tell were the camera-person is positioned. Looks like someone was going to great efforts to make this look like a flood rather than a trickle.

And don't they look gung ho? They look like they can't believe this crap is happening to them.

Lt. John Branson, 25, of Washington, D.C., says the Marines shouldn't underestimate an enemy that has spent decades fighting - against Soviet invaders in the '80s, against other Afghans in a civil war during the '90s and against U.S., NATO and Afghan government forces since 2001.

"Most of the people we're going to be fighting have been fighting for 30 years," he says. "The stupid ones are dead."

And why stupid, submitter? This is the group who did harbor the people who attacked you, and who then refused to turn them over when asked to do so. Its also the same group who tortures and kills the people under its jurisdiction for doing anything deemed 'too western'. And you don't think anything should be done about these people?

It's also the same group that was allowed to reconstitute after an otherwise utter defeat by an ADD president who wanted to have a little adventure in Iraq and so took his eye off the real ball.

=============================

I know he's talking about the enemy. The enemy who died in combat, fighting for the ideals of their leaders, just like American soldiers. Had the leader of Iran made that statement about the dead American troops it would be used as justification for another war. His callousness shows the disregard that the leadership has for human life. This kind of dismissive attitude towards the "enemy" is the fuel for things like Abu Ghraib and the circumvention of the Geneva Convention. If he cares this little for human life, why would anyone believe that our soldiers are more than pawns to him? How about the thousands of dead innocent victims. Where they dumb, too?

Fark needs an UNFORTUNATE tag.

This isn't stupid on the part of the Marines, they go where they're told. It's unfortunate that we didn't squash the Taliban and rebuild Afghanistan when we had a chance. We dropped some bombs, left a few guys and then turned our fond attentions to Iraq. Unfortunately.

I think his intent was to say that they are facing an enemy with far more experience in urban warfare than most of our young soldiers probably have. It's a tactical observation, and I think it shows that they do respect their enemy.

No argument here - although if I remember correctly OBL managed to escape before the whole Iraq fiasco.

But regardless - are you arguing that NATO should just give up because Bush dropped the ball?

================================

I believe that they respect the enemy's ability to fight, but not as men who are also sacraficing their lives for something they believe in. I mean, if I was getting shot at it would be hard for me to respect the people doing it, as well. But, as an outside observer who believes that neither side deserves this, it saddens me to see us consistently take the low road.

You're not too bright are you? Do you have any military experience? Any combat experience? Didn't think so.

A callous attitude towards the enemy is necessary for survival. If you're in a combat zone and you think too deeply about the enemies ' families, ideals, childhood, etc.; you're going to hesitate to kill them just like any moral and sane human being would do. That moment of hesitation gives them a nice opportunity to send you home in a flag-draped box. Contrary to popular belief, most servicemembers don't join for the thrill of the kill. We're just willing to sacrifice our lives for a cause we believe in. Ever notice that nobody talks about 'confirmed kills' except for snipers (who need to to make sure they're mission has been completed) and liars (who probably never saw combat and just want the attention)?

But we all know that you're an expert in warfare and think you have all your bases covered. Maybe if the enemy humanized us, they would hesitate too and everybody would drop their weapons and light up a bowl together!

Keep telling yourself that, and hold back on the judgments until you've shaved off your dreads and been in their boots.

I know somebody who's dating a former Marine also, and since they got together she's been glowing with happiness. This past year I met a Marine and now I know why my coworker is always smiling.

Well, I can't either. The Taliban should have been eradicated long ago. If the troops and infrastructural effort in Iraq had been concentrated in Afghanistan a la WWII and the Marshall Plan----that country would be well on its way now and we'd be a much better country right now in pretty much every way.

How is saying that nation building is stupid an insult to the Marines? Send in some special forces to get bin Laden and stop wasting money in a shiathole that will never have a halfway functional government.
