that could have been alot more fun.

The phone was missing for two months and the teacher didn't report it as stolen?

Makes perfect sense to me!

They make it sound like that's a bad thing.

If he was calling Miss Cleo he may be in the clear. I'm not a psychic, but I predict he won't be passing this class.

If he had farked the teacher instead of stealing from her that would be OK too and she would be the one going to jail. If he had shot her he wouldn't have been held financially responsible, at least. Sue the phone company, school district, teacher, whoever, it's their fault. Isn't America great? It's a wonder anyone wants to teach anymore. Home school for everyone! I'm tired of paying taxes for what is essentially free daycare for these asshat kids who don't give a sh!t. To the salt mines/Nike factories with them!

My mother USED to teach at this school and my sister went to it too. They aren't the brightest bulbs in the box, the sharpest knives in the drawer, the biggest ballons in the parade, the, uh, longest, uh....well they aren't very smart.

But resourceful....

Last year a student's cell rang in my high school biology class and her ring tone was... "If I Only Had A Brain."
Freshmen make it way to easy sometimes.

That teen reimbursed the school for $5 in calls he made.

Only $7742 left to go...

Cripes! What kid has 8 grand?

Let's get real, the parents will have to pay, and the child will only learn the lesson of: "Whatever trouble I get in, my parents will get me out".

I know firsthand how this works...

GRRRRRR!

Abortion should be legal until they're 21...

I wanted to talk about my fetish for attractive and successful African-Americans!

if i lost my phone, i'd know it in a second and have it deactivate it. looks like we got a smart kid who took advantage of some dumbass who lost the phone. if he set the phone on silent mode, he would've walked away with this.

2002-11-16 01:55:20 PM
it's not a phone, it's like a calling card

yeah like there's any chance in HELL of this kid getting that kind of money in a YEAR. Hell, I'd have a hard time earning that. You'd have to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for half a year to earn that, assuming you were being paid $7 an hour (no way he's gonna get a job that pays even that much) and that you don't spend any money on food or gas to get to work. Being 14 of course is going to not only make it impossible to drive to work, but it will also mean he can't work 8 hours a day because he's in school AND the government has laws against how long someone that young can work. And on top of that he has to do 60 hours of community service?

I'd just accept the criminal charges. What would they do to him? Are they gonna lock up a 14 year old kid for six months to a year cause he merely stole a cell phone and made some calls to some 1-900 numbers on it?

I don't understand how this case works either. He had a trial... They ordered him to do community service and pay back the money... How can they THEN say that in a year they'll charge him again for the same crime in a criminal case if he doesn't pay the money back? You can't try him twice...

Besides... I thought that you couldn't be jailed for a debt... This is a debt. And anyone knows that if you get sued for a large sum of money you can just file for bankruptcy and not pay it back, and being 14 years old and having no assets, that would work just fine.

Plus his credit rating won't really matter for awhile...

The teacher is a dumbass for A) not deactivating the phone, as it is her responsibility to do upon losing her phone, and B) not putting a security lock on the phone whenever it is not being used, and C) obviously not paying attention to the whereabouts of a CELLULAR PHONE in a school full of ADOLESCENTS. There's probably other stuff I missed but that's pretty much it. If you lose your cell phone it is nobody's fault but your own.

I assume the teacher is a woman from here on because a man would have made none of those mistakes.

If she had been the least bit intelligent about cell phone usage she wouldn't have had $7000+ charged to her name. It's her fault and her responsibility because she is a dumbass.

The student allegedly made more than 300 calls on the phone, which was supposed to be used by students for emergency calls to their parents, after taking it in April.

What the fark is that about? God forbid you make students spend 35 cents to use a pay phone. That kind of idiocy is exactly what leads to problems like this.

Yes, the kid should be punished, but he shouldn't be charged the eight grand.

2002-11-16 02:58:30 PM
He should just go with the charges. Doesn't his record get wiped clean at 18?

2002-11-16 03:46:24 PM
Did anyone else notice the pop-up? are they trying to be PC or something?

2002-11-16 03:56:24 PM
that's one strange family.

2002-11-16 04:28:01 PM
Spanking obviously has no effect on this kid.

2002-11-16 05:03:04 PM
Whats even funnier is that on a teachers salary, she/he prolly wouldnt be able to afford to pay off the calls either. hahahaha ....wait..no thats sad.

Gomer113: Alls I gotta say is, why do two of them not have noses? This is going to bother me for a long time.

2002-11-16 06:12:15 PM
its true, if you make prank calls in russia they will take your phone away and give it to an old lady, so she can call rescue 003

2002-11-16 08:41:36 PM
The student allegedly made more than 300 calls on the phone, which was supposed to be used by students for emergency calls to their parents, after taking it in April.

This makes no sense. The phone had been missing for 7 months and the owner either never noticed, or never got it deactivated? Furthermore, how was the phone bill being paid? Lastly, wouldn't the phone company notice that it was stolen or think the number was cloned when the call patterns suddenly changed (primarily 900 numbers)?

Besides... I thought that you couldn't be jailed for a debt... This is a debt. And anyone knows that if you get sued for a large sum of money you can just file for bankruptcy and not pay it back, and being 14 years old and having no assets, that would work just fine.

I'm sure the law says that his legal guardian(s) are liable for his actions.

"I'm sure the law says that his legal guardian(s) are liable for his actions."

If that were true, then the police wouldn't have threatened to charge him criminally in a year if he didn't pay it back... they'd just have sued the parents for it.

I don't think it's right btw, to hold parents responsible for their kid's actions. Kids have a mind of their own and it is impossible, no matter how good of a parent you are, to control what they do 24 hours a day. Therefore there is no way in hell you should be responsible for what they do. THEY are responsible for what they do.

2002-11-16 10:08:02 PM
For that money he could have bought a computer, DSL for a year and gotten more action. You have much to learn, grasshopper.

2002-11-16 10:36:18 PM
how funny would it be if the kid stole 8 grand from the teacher to pay him back. from what it sounds like, the teacher is severely retarded, and he'd probably fall for it.

2002-11-16 10:51:15 PM
"THEY are responsible for what they do."

Unfortunately, they aren't. And they know it.

That is what is wrong with some kids today. Thay have realized that they aren't responsible for anything until they are 18...

And they use this fact to their fullest amusement.

2002-11-17 03:37:51 AM
I am still wondering about the noses on that damn ad.

2002-11-17 11:23:27 AM
Sswift,

I've never heard of anyone being given a year to raise funds to pay off the damages of their crime. I'm guessing that the Judge and school felt the kid would learn something if he had to pay the bill instead of his parents, and that's why he has this year.
