(Pew Research)   Only 11 percent of Americans rate the economy as excellent or good, a six percent drop from January. But it's still obviously the fault of the media   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 129

11% of Americans seem to either live in caves, or they have their heads firmly planted far enough inside their rear ends that they don't know what the rest of the world is saying.

UberDave: Or they're filthy rich....

No, the filthy rich know the state of the economy in regards to the falling dollar value. I would say the 11% are on the non-rich side, or those that never leave the country.

I guess a huge percentage of the population must rate the economy as "excellent" for it to mean that we are not entering another great depression.

43% rate the economy fair, good or excellent.

I'm glad that our economy can be summed up with an adjective. Let's pull that back to just a number, 1-5.

"How's our economy?"

"Hmmm. I'd say like... like a 2. Maybe 3."

I have a good job, my expenses aren't really going up all that much aside from gas, and no one I know is unemployed. Is the economy great? Nope, but is it terrible? Hell no. I'd rate it a Good to Low Good.

step one: lie about being in a recession

step two: repeat

step three: pretend barack obama is gonna fix the non-problem

step four: after much anticipation, the media finally gets to fellate obama

Here' some straight talk for you, my friends, we need to get second jobs and make gas tax-free for the summer.

UberDave: Or they're filthy rich....

I'm not filthy rich on 50k. But I'm single, I have no children, and a tank of gas lasts me over a month so I'm not getting kicked in the balls like a majority of Americans. The only reason I know we're in the shiatter is because I read.

Where the crap did they find these 11% of people!?!

I mean, even my friends that are like "I hate the news." or "I hate reading." are talking about the economy.

These people must put their fingers in their ears and walk around yelling "LALALALALA! I CANT HEAR YOU! LALALA!"

...or, unlike you, we're successful at our jobs. This has been the best year I've ever had, financially. But hey, I'm sure that "what the rest of the world is saying" should override my own personal experience, right? I mean hell, if the rest of you want to have a gigantic Pity-Party because you bought investment property at sub-prime rates, and are now losing your shirts, I should go right along with it, right? Because clearly, whining is really helping your situation.

I would be very tempted to cock-punch anybody that blames the media for this. The only thing they didn't do right was figure this out sooner. Less than a year ago people were saying the economy looked superb and they were never called out. Every realtor and lender was begging people to buy a house and was scaring them with tactics like "this is an opportunity, prices have never dropped before and if you don't buy now you'll be priced out forevar!!!"

2008-04-24 01:50:44 PM
According to Dave Ramsey it's all the media's fault that people think the economy sucks. So I'm guessing these 11% would include some of listeners.

Said listeners being the people that are so financially informed that they have to turn to Dave Ramsey for advice.

You probably don't work in the lending or realestate industries than. Those guys have been hit pretty hard. Many other people still have jobs but are suffering from the effects of inflation. Just because you are doing well does not mean that the economy as a whole is good.

Being personally successful financially and believing that the economy is slowing are not mutually exclusive. I have had an excellent couple years as well.

You must not eat bread or rice, or use milk or milk products like cheese. Or eggs. Or, well, you must not eat. Or shop for food.

Rapmaster2000: Being personally successful financially and believing that the economy is slowing are not mutually exclusive. I have had an excellent couple years as well.

Thank you, I was about to say the same thing. That argument is the most annoying and intellectually dishonest way to frame the issue. It's expected that a person will make more as time goes on, even in a bad economy. But that doesn't mean anything if they owe $300k more on their mortgage than their house is worth and are paying twice as much for fuel as they were a year ago.

Yes, the housing and lending industries suck and yes those are big industries. However, there's a whole other world out there that is managing pretty well. My brother works in the lending industry and was able to find a job withing the last 1.5 years when he decided to move from California to Florida of all places where the housing/mortgage markets are some of the worst. While underemployment is disappointing, unemployment is still rather low. The economy is not in complete and total melt down mode. We have just gone from OMGWTFBBQ awesome to ehh not that bad.

Who the FARK is claiming the economy is "excellent"?

2008-04-24 02:00:50 PM
Higher gas prices, higher food prices, lower wage growth, lower house values, lower investment returns, higher unemployment, higher health care costs, higher education costs, higher heating costs, higher electrical costs, higher water costs, offshoring. Besides that the economy is great.

Shaggy_C: I have a good job, my expenses aren't really going up all that much aside from gas, and no one I know is unemployed.

Same here. However, all of my friends owe nearly twice what their house is worth, know that values won't go back up for a long ass time, and are suffocating on gas prices. That is not an indication of a good economy. You can cheerlead all you want, but you just look like a liar and a fool in the end.

Make sure you invest all of your money there, for great justice
I promise the economy will not collapse, the dollar will not be worth less than the paper it's printed on, and you will not be destitute after placing all your trust in a system designed to get people to betray each other. Honest!

The economy is not good, I was going to get my old dog's teeth cleaned, but now he's just going to have to do without. I need to neuter my new puppy, I'm thinking of doing it myself.
