Who's Britain??

2002-11-15 01:37:51 PM
Why? Because they tried to colonize the whole world?

Too bad they sucked at it.

2002-11-15 01:38:44 PM
Well, you can't argue against them in the last 50 years. YAY for USA lapdogs! Now sit UK, until we bomb Iraq. LATE.

Lesson for the US: Stop screwing with the rest of the world
before you're too weak and insignificant to do anything to rectify the
situation.

Sad part is it's all true, poor Brits. They're paying thier penance, now they are forced to follow around the new imperial masters.

2002-11-15 01:44:16 PM
Duh.

Of course, UK is old and busted in this category. U.S. is new hotness.

Oh Oh I think I just felt the white mans burden get a few pounds heavier. We should all be euthanized at birth.

Jack Straw from Wichita
Cut his buddy down
Dug for him a shallow grave
And layed his body down

Half a mile from Tucson
By the morning light
One man gone and another to go
My old buddy you're moving much too slow

We can share the women
we can share the wine...

Where are Harmonia and Tadlette? They'll set the record straight...

Shouldn't this have the "obvious" tag.

2002-11-15 02:01:23 PM
Maybe not everything, but we can blame the British for bad food. Likewise:

Imagine if:
The world's chefs were British
The world's mechanics were French,
The world's lovers were Swiss
The police were all German and
It was all organised by the Italians.

2002-11-15 02:02:17 PM
As Winston Chruchill once said, "The only thing you should blame, is blame itself"

2002-11-15 02:03:23 PM
Why haven't we bought those islands yet? They'd make fine additions to the United States.

2002-11-15 02:06:06 PM
The problem with you British is you have no balls.

2002-11-15 02:06:45 PM
Before you make that purchase Dangerperst remember that Harmonia lives on those islands. Ewwwwww

2002-11-15 02:08:35 PM
Jack Straw must be the most deluded cabinet member. He still thinks he's a socialist???

PS Wake n Bake; We RULED at colonising the world, too bad we can't rule at something we could be proud of.

2002-11-15 02:10:40 PM
AI2001-

umm... the french also had many colonies, so dont wrench yer arm out of its socket patting yerself on the back...

2002-11-15 02:15:41 PM
Sorry to be the first serious post, but...

The British can easily be blamed for a variety of the worlds problems as mentioned in the article. The partition between Pakistan and India and Bangledesh still causes massive problems. Kashmir being one of them. But you must also remember that the lines for many of these countries were drawn where conflicts have existed for centuries.

But the British certainly seemed to be able to turn everthing they touched into mud. It is rather amusing that the Brits of that time believed themselves to be saviours bringing civilization to the uncivilized world. But they effectively killed more people and destroyed more lives than any other group of people in the history of the world.

Poor and decimated.

The legacy of the British Empire.

2002-11-15 02:16:42 PM
Yeah, but Britian had colonies to be proud of. What did France have? French Guiana? Canada? Oooo!

2002-11-15 02:18:48 PM
Lesson for the US: Stop screwing with the rest of the world..

Stop asking us to.

2002-11-15 02:21:58 PM
All those regions were farked up long before the British got there. I would surmise that without any British involvement whatsoever these same regions would be involved in similar conflicts now. They'd just be over different lines on a map is all. Humans are funny little animals wherever they're from. You just can't blame all the worlds problems on one group of people.

2002-11-15 02:22:10 PM
Yooyooyoo:

Thanks for saying what I have been telling fellow Brits. They seem to have a problem in admitting the truth...

2002-11-15 02:23:42 PM
Unitshifter:

I don't blame All the worlds problems on the Brits. The Frogs are to blame also....smile....

2002-11-15 02:25:23 PM
Flamebait follows...

The biggest difference between the US (successful) and the UK (unsuccessful) at expanding the empire is in technique. The UK would in fact try to "civilize" the indiginious/aboriginals - the US decimated the population and expanded into its lands.

Which is better/more successful? I offer Islamabad and Manhattan as examples to compare and contrast. Who wants to live in NYC? Who wants to go live in the refuge of the taliban - a land that's held onto its quaint native customs?

I agree with the premise that the UK is to blame, but only because they didn't replace the existing "culture" in these places.

(grabs popcorn.)

2002-11-15 02:26:41 PM
Um... at least they tried?

2002-11-15 02:30:53 PM
But wasn't America a colony of Briti.... ahh forget it.

2002-11-15 02:31:25 PM
You think Britain is the problem????????????????
Its so obvious that its France!!!!!
Who else would be to blame for women's armpit hair, cheap wine, cheezy movies and commercials, Jean-Paul Gauthier, people who don't know when to shut up, unfired guns, bottled bath water called perrier, serial frog killers, cul de sac on my street, Jean-Marie Lepen and did I say Gauthier?

2002-11-15 02:31:30 PM
Decaf333: The US is successful at emperialism and the UK was not?
Pick yourself up a history book. They owned 1/3rd of the damn globe.

Line I saw in "SLC Punk":

"Stevo: Another thing that pissed me off, talkin' about who started punk rock music. Was it Sex Pistols in England? Was it the Ramones in the Velvet Underground in New York? 'It was the Ramones!' 'It was the Sex Pistols!' Raahh! Who cares who started it?! It's music. I don't know who started it, and I don't give a fark. The one thing I do know is that we did it harder, we did it faster, and we definitely did it with more love, baby. You can't take that away from us. "

You guys saying the brits were bad colonialists. . . youre wrong. They were the best of the bunch.

Look at the countries of the former european powers, shall we?

Spain: South America and Mexico. Not exactly world powers.
Belgium: Chunks of Africa which are now plunged into anarchy and civil war.
France: Algeria, Vietnam and Quebec: Algeria, although once legally part of france, has not exactly flourished, nor has vietnam. And aside from Patric Roy, what the hell has quebec done? :)

Lets contrast that with the nations today which were founded by Britain:

the United States: global superpower
Canada: global superpower's overly intellectual little brooding brother, also a first rate, very successful nation
Australia: global superpowers eccentric alcholic distant cousin, first rate nation
S. Africa: in many ways the most successful of the african nations (in other ways, of course, totally farked, but as a nation state, very strong until fairly recently)
India and Pakistan: well, the bag is mixed, for sure. But they're still doing much better than most of their neighbors.

The Brits did it with fine institutions and civil service. The only thing they did catastrophically bad in their nation building was racial relations; S.Africa, the USA, Australia. . not exactly role models for racial harmony are they.

Anyway though, i think at the end of the day, of all the great powers, Great Britain was *undeniably* the most successful at not only building and holding an empire to get rich off of like the other great powers of the 18th and 19th century, but also leaving behind the foundation for sturdy independent nation building.

2002-11-15 02:42:36 PM
I reckon this could have used an OBVIOUS tag.

2002-11-15 02:58:57 PM
Liz Hurley makes up for all Britain's little international boo-boos.

Lets contrast that with the nations today which were founded by Britain:

the United States: global superpower

Hands up, Its all Britains fault.

Sorry World

Well said Father Jack !
Also note that Britain was the worlds major power for aprox' 300 years - So US can try and compare in about 250 years time !

2002-11-15 03:17:53 PM
The British are like Motown. It had its time, but the rest of the world has moved on.

2002-11-15 03:19:59 PM
DogsBollox: in 250 years, the whole world will be owned by the US.

All hail Emperor Bush! Good God, he's the greatest president we've ever had. (Except for Lincoln, of course.)

2002-11-15 03:20:42 PM
I don't think we can blame GB on the Palestine issue. They have been fighting there long before British Kings started sleeping with their cousins.

2002-11-15 03:21:31 PM
Now the Brits are a division II nation.

2002-11-15 03:23:22 PM
Saying the British were successful colonialist is like saying John Wayne Gacy was a successful child molester/killer.
