Raoul Duke: We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into locked a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon

As I read that, I began thinking to myself, shouldn't it be somehow blasphemous to title a movie with the initials FSM?

All hail his noodliness. Ramen.

From everything ive seen this is going to be the most spectacularly un-funny piece of dingo shiat since "Knocked Up". How many more movies are going to copy "Chasing Amy" with this type of title?

"Jackoff" is a term used to describe dictionary owners who annoy people who have good taste in comedies.

Or failing that, why Wes Anderson is the Second Coming of Christ.

Anti-majoritarian hate is the greatest comedy of all.

Funny you mention it but I just rented it over the weekend and it sucked. Its a weak Wes Anderson clone complete with hipster doofus dialogue, "indy" music and thrift store fashion. These movies have been done to death. Still doesnt change the fact that FSM and the like are equally unoriginal. Dudes farting/smoking weed/putting things in their butts can be funny (Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia) but these guys cant even get that right.

His first two movies are excellent examples of original story-telling and have basically spawned an entire genre. His career arc has followed Quentin Tarantino's. "Rushmore"
was his "Reservoir Dogs" and "The Royal Tenenbaums" his "Pulp Fiction" with ever diminishing returns on a common theme. I could barely watch his last two movies. So good try but at least hes made two good movies and FSM shouldnt even be mentioned in the same sentence with either of them.

Actually, Bottle Rocket was Anderson's first movie, but you knew that, riiiight?

And common themes? All of their movies have common styles as both director's have shown that they have distinct styles, but I wouldn't say that the themes are the same for all their movies.

I also wouldn't say the quality of their films have been diminishing over time. I like Resevoir Dogs becuase it's a pretty well made genre piece with great acting, but Jackie Brown is a much better film. While Pulp Fiction is one of my favorite movies, I wouldn't say that it is better than Kill Bill Vol. 2 as the stylistic choices and inspirations make it a very different film.

Similarly, Royal Tenanbaums is a great movie, better I think than Rushmore, but currently Darjeeling Limited is my favorite Anderson movie because I think that his creative decisions as a director can be much more appreciated within the setting and backdrop of India, immersed in the ideas eastern mysticism.

This is a detailed way of saying, once again, that art and entertainment are subjective, as evidenced by our differing opinions about the details surrounding the "career arcs" of just two directors. Don't get so worked up about it.

/Look forward to seeing you in line for Pineapple Express!
