He was cautious about making assessments about the accident. "I don't know what distracted" the driver, Abegg said.

I think I have the answer:

the Garfield High School girls' softball team

When I was at Georgetown, one of the funniest things on campus was this small overpass over the road that runs through the university.

The road exists only for security, medical and delivery vehicles to reach certain parts of the campus more easily.

I don't know the exact height of the overpass, but apparently it was a bit low, because if you look up at it there are dozens if not hundreds of scratch/gouge-marks running the entire length. This means that dozens, if not hundreds, of trucks that were just too high had started to enter the overpass (about 10-20 feet long), HEARD AND FELT the scraping of their truck against the ceiling, and KEPT GOING!

Amazing stuff.

Every two weeks?! Would it kill them to get a bigger sign, perhaps a second sign posted in advance of the overpass?

ThatGuyGreg: Would it kill them to get a bigger sign, perhaps a second sign posted in advance of the overpass?

Or perhaps an easily-replaceable overhead bar a few feet in advance of the bridge (or on the entrance to that road.)

It wasn't immediately clear what damage if any was done to the 96-year-old footbridge, which conceals a sewer trunk line.

A sewer line over head? Didn't anyone ever tell this bunch that shiat don't flow up hill?

Perhaps a modest sized billboard, with a picture from the most recent four wheeled sardine can incident?

Honestly, I don't get how this happens once.

I drive a totally normal Jeep Cherokee, and I still read those height signs whenever I go into a garage or pass under a low overpass. Are these truck/bus drivers this inattentive about the rest of driving Isn't this their job?

I've played softball on the field he was going to, so I'm really getting a kick out of some of these replies.

Not with girls softball though. Mixed league.

Anyway, the fields like 15 blocks away, they were taking a scenic route, and it really was a total duh move other than "lets drive through the Arboretum!!!" probably started the whole thing. That and not knowing how tall the bus is.

2008-04-17 09:47:09 AM
Looking at the pictures, it appears to be a narrow windy road (35mph limit?). How fast was the idiot driver going to manage to rip 90% of the roof off of the bus?

How fast was this shiat going?

I was just wondering that. It looks like he got that thing wedged pretty damn far under the overpass. Maybe he thought he could just kind of...keep going?

If it's every two weeks it might be worth it just to I don't know lower the road at the overpass?

If you're under it, isn't it considered to be an underpass?

HEY here's an idea- how about a new bridge that accomodates the realities of the 21st century. Hell, even the 20th.

Every two weeks???Why not make a little metal "Hangman" looking beam that has a small piece of metal hanging from it. If you truck smacks this harmless (though loud) piece of metal, you won't make it.

Came to say that exact thing. Insult to injury.

But maybe if they didn't suck...

Well, they probably don't. Softball and all.

Judging from the last picture (14 out of 14), the overpass is a solid arch so the 9'-00" clearance sign applies only to the center of the road. The bus might have cleared the bridge if it was driven on the centerline through it. Dumb mistake though.

/Insurance claims adjustor is going to have a field day with this one...

Wait wait wait. If they were RETURNING, how did they get past it in the first place, and why didn't they take that same route back?

How exactly does a bus go THROUGH an OVERpass.

I'm thinking that the bus didn't make it UNDER the OVERpass.

/subby gets -1/2 point me thinks.
