I'm not usually one to biatch about which links are greenlighted and which aren't, but this has to be lamest greenlight of the year. And on the Main page, no less, not just in the Politics ghetto.

Yeah, I'm going to click on a Boortz link for a funny.

If I wanted a laugh on Boortz's site, I'd read his political views.

Gee, I think a 30% Federal Sales tax is a great idea, especially when you pile it on top of social security, medicare, and self-employment taxes I already pay.

Wouldn't that be just dandy.

And never mind about that pesky 16th Amendment, we ignore those anyway.

Thanks to a rational caller yesterday, DK, I am beginning to do some research on this North American Union.

I do not think this word, rational, means what you think it means...

If we were under the fair tax, that stick would be 30% cheaper, because the benevolent company would pass the savings along to you, AND you'd be making 30% more, so it would really be a free stick, but not totally free, because that would be communist...

In other words, if your credit exceeds the actual amount you own owe in income taxes, the government actually gives you a check for the difference.

Retard.

Let me break it down to this at least:

If you think in general everyone can pay a lot less taxes and we can get much more revenue you are an idiot.

Also I am amazed from the last thread the most "fair tax" supporters seemed to have no idea the most of the very rich make money from investment and they have millions to billions that they never spend and just use to make them more money.

Also another fun question I asked was:
Europe doesn't add vat tax to exports would the US add fair-tax to exports?

And where would these billions of last tax revenue come from?

Also many of the people told me all states taxes would go away and that the Federal government would take over ALL spending across the nation. This was very interesting to learn.

Quel: Who the hell doesn't know what they get paid? I stopped reading the article there.

Honestly? I don't. I could tell you roughly, within $5K per year or so, but I wouldn't know the exact current amount without pulling out a recent month's paycheck stub and multiplying the gross pay by 12 (I get paid monthly).

2008-04-15 12:28:04 PM
There is a lot of class warfare in that posting.

Also, studies show that when sales taxes go over 10% people start looking for ways to cheat that system too. A 30% Federal sales tax would turn Craigslist into a funnel of greymarket merchandise. Our Federal government in all of its wisdom is spending $3T a year. Is it easier to collect through HR departments and quarterly statements or through 100 million point of sales?

Neal Boortz hates the average American.

Oh, Hillary could probably win with a landslide if the election were today ... but it certainly wouldn't be because they see her as someone with the "strength and experience to lead." It would be because the 21st Century voter is looking for someone who will make their lives easier. The type of voters who will cast their ballot for Hillary are interested in one thing: Which one of the candidates is going to get the government to do the things for me that I don't particularly want to do for myself. Hillary is the candidate for the 40-hour work week voter; the voter who feels that 40 hours a week at a job with ample smoking breaks, 60 days of paid family leave, 12 paid sick days, two weeks of paid vacation, paid parking, child care and a health payment plan is all that should ever be expected of any American .. the rest should be provided by government.

I'm sorry, if most of those things are unreasonable then I don't want to be reasonable.

Isn't that why a VAT is better, since it's incrementally taxed at each point in production rather than all at the end? The end result is the same for legitimately-purchased goods, but the VAT helps cut back on cheats.

Well, if you have variability in each month and aren't salaried, thats different. But you still know what you get paid each period. My pay stubs list exactly what I make, what my taxes withheld were, what they took out for insurance, etc.

B... b... b... tax revenue is at an all-time high!

(First of all, it took years to recover from the huge dip after Bush's tax cuts. It'd be far higher right now without them. Second, if Republicans are anti-tax, wouldn't it be a bad thing that tax revenues are up to a record high?)

elchip: Hillary is the candidate for the 40-hour work week voter; the voter who feels that 40 hours a week at a job

I work with people like that. That is to say, people who look down on 40-hour-a-weekers. I'm salaried, so I don't get overtime--why on earth would I work more than 40 hours??? It would be taking a pay cut. The funny thing is, they don't get paid any more than I do, and because I'm less stressed I'm far more productive. But that still doesn't stop the occasional cracks about people who bolt out the door as soon as their eight hours are up.

I guess they're the ones who DO want "I should have spent more time at the office" on their tombstones.

This. I generally think of my paycheck in terms of the net every other friday, but that's because that's how much I have available to pay my bills. I know darn well what my annual gross is and how it translates into an hourly rate (I'm non-exempt), but that isn't as important in my day-to-day thinking as my take-home.

I would agree. Deploy a VAT system. Drastically reduce all of the Federal and Corporate tax rates. Eliminate all deductions. Just add up all earnings from all sources and pay your bracket on that amount. Would make filling amazingly simple and put HR Bloch out of business.

There's the problem... all the accountants, attorneys, HR Block tards, etc. would be put out of business. I imagine there is a pretty powerful opposition to this that has deep pockets. Lined with our money.

The proposed federal sales tax is 23%.

Social Security and Medicare will be paid for by these funds and will no longer be taken as withholdings. Self-employment tax will go away, along with corporate income tax, capital gains tax, death tax, the alternative minimum tax, gift taxes, audits, the IRS, and this fabulous national holiday known as April 15th.

I will be here all day trying to shoot down the misconceptions about the Fair Tax. Knowledgeable people please help me.

2008-04-15 12:48:23 PM
zavier: The proposed federal sales tax is 23%.

Wrong. 23% is deceptive.

A $1 can of soup, after this tax, would be $1.30. It's a 30% tax on the base price of the good, but 30 cents is 23% of $1.30, the after-tax amount, which is how they get away with saying 23%.

And some people don't think it'll even be budget-neutral with 30%.

2008-04-15 12:48:46 PM
WTF...pressing to ask what your co-workers make? That isn't "farking with your co-workers" it is being a nosy douchebag.

2008-04-15 12:48:57 PM
You know what really annoyed me about doing my taxes? I don't have anything too complicated, just a 1040 and a Sched. A to deduct the mortgage interest, so I don't use any tax software. It's that damned AMT. I get to the line on the form and it says, "fill out this worksheet to see if you might need to pay AMT." So I go through the worksheet, which involves taking my income and adding and subtracting various things to it in multiple steps and then multiplying the end result by a percentage and comparing it to something else. And the result of that comparison is that I'm supposed to fill out a different form. So then I go through that form, adding and subtracting a slightly different set of stuff from my income and then multiplying by a completely different percent and comparing to a different set of numbers.

And I'm not anywhere close to having to pay AMT (which I could have pretty much guessed to begin with). WTF? I thought about going back through the forms to see what the calculations actually were, but by that point my head hurt.

Guess I should invest in some tax software just to avoid that pain.

I'm in IT... it's change or die. They'll get over it, just like the telegraph operators did, like the railroad workers, and like the mortgage brokers are.

I'm going to lunch before I get too irritated.
