(Toronto Star)   Marion Jones gave up her Sydney medals willingly, but if the IOC want her relay teammates' medals, they're just gonna have to catch them first   (thestar.com) divider line 54

Yeah, it's only okay to keep the medals when the judge is on the take.

Help me out here. Were Clark, Hennegan et al. also on the juice? If not, why can't they keep the medals (tainted though they may be)?

By this logic, the Yankees and SF Giants clubhouses should be empty right about now.

Maybe it's because the relay is a team event.

You are correct. Teams should be disqualified if their players are doped up.

Because whatever effect the drugs had on her performance (ie time) affected the ultimate team outcome in the relay.

They should have never allowed the Olympics to be held in a country where their civil rights are so abused, pollution is unchecked and entire sub-races are treated as 2nd class citizens.

Wooo0ps! Go Team USA!

It is true that they should not be punished for her mistake. It's also true that they should not benefit from her mistake either. IMHO, the right answer is not to strip the medals and reallocate them but to simply declare there was no winner to the event, officially.

The problem goes beyond just tainting the team. It taints the whole event because competing teams plot their strategies based upon who they are running against. If Jones had not been running, you can't even assume that the silver medalists would have come in first; there are too many unknowns.

But until there is real punishment for doping, the rewards will continue to outweigh the costs and people will continue to do it. The problem with doping is not just individual; there remains a cultural acceptance of doping in all sport. Until that cultural acceptance goes away, the problem will continue.

Actually, that's not true. The Olympics have a history of being fair in that regard. The real problem is that doping during most events themselves is pointless. The real advantage doping confers is in training, which happens long before the Olympics. There are few sports, like the marathon, where doping during the race is effective but in general doping the day or week of the even does no good whatsoever.

Two things:

1) I hope they don't give the medals back.

2) I never liked Marion Jones, even before the doping incident. Why? Because she had that annoying Nike commercial back in 2000. It had her nagging about how female athletes don't make as much as the men. Hmmmmm.....maybe it's because men's sports are actually entertaining.

False. The cheater's actions benefitted the entire team over the other teams. While it might *suck* to lose the medal over the actions of a single teammate it is the very definition of just and fair.

Don't want to even open yourself up to being screwed by a teammate? Don't participate in team sports. If you want absolutely 100% of the glory/fail to rest on your own shoulders then participate in individual competitions.

What do they need lawyers for to tell the IOC, sorry I lost the... I mean someone stole my medals, don't know where they are.

I'm sure it would be cheaper to pay the IOC for the cost of a replacement medal, especially the bronze, than to pay a laywer.
or,
I hear you can get cheap counterfeits of practically anything in China. Turn over the counterfeits to the IOC.

TFA implies that the medals get 'shifted around' after things like this, so all of a sudden you could have been a 4th place loser teaching fitness at the local YMCA and now all of a sudden you are a medaler.

Once they start disqualifying whole teams 13th place doesn't have such a shabby ring to it anymore, eh? Think of all those shameful, humiliating moments of failure and ineptitude erased!

I love happy endings. Thank you drug testing committee for your great work, I award you a Gold Medal!

What about the other team of 4 woman that lost because one competitor cheated? Should they be robbed of their medals? The medals rightfully belong to another team. Welcome to professional sports.

Or are we all getting offended that they want to take medals away from "TEAM USA!@!!".

it's true, Dick Pound and his other corrupt bully arsehole colleagues should put down the stones-

the IOC is so fuhking corrupt it's not funny.

ALSO, while I'm here- professional sports are totally retarded and human beings should find something better to do until everyone on the planet is fed and tucked in safely at night.

The IOC set the precedent for this when they refused to rescind the medals for the East Germans, after it was proved they had been been using steroids, albeit unknowingly, when the records were made public. The Russian figure skating pair were not forced to surrender their medals either when it was revealed the judges had thrown the contest. Just like in this case, those people won by benefiting from others' cheating. These women shouldn't have to turn in their medals, either.

2008-04-14 09:13:53 PM
The East German thing I am not aware of. I will have to look it up.

The Russian thing is easily distinguished: the skaters did not do anything wrong - it was the judges. That cannot be compared to a "team" being stripped of their medals for one person cheating. If nothing else, it is only "one" medal - it's just physically created several times to all the team members can wear it.
The "one" medal is revoke - their representations should be as well.

An article about an american cheating in the olympics can somehow veer off into questioning whether China deserves to host or how doping tests are biased against non-host countries? All with zero proof or even anecdotal evidence.

Where did all these tibetan protesters come from anyway. Just storing up the energy for the olympics? Go join the CIA and fight in Tibet, do something useful.

I wouldn't give the medals up. What is the IOC gonna do? Come over here and get them? Charge them for the medals. What if they don't pay? Send it to a collection agency? I doubt the IOC has any judicial or legal power here in the US. I'd be surprised if they did.

2008-04-14 09:54:10 PM
Why does anybody care if athletes use performance enhancing or inhibiting drugs? I say let them use whatever they want, from steroids to crack; blood transfusions to meth. It'd make things more exciting. This goes for non athletes, too.

The IOC says that the punishment should go straight down the line to everyone whether they knew of it or not. So, can I get my money back from the IOC on the event ticket for that particular event? Seems fair to me.

That's the point I came in here to make. Barroid juiced so the Giants get the 2002 pennant taken away...Clemens juiced so the wankees no longer won the 2000 Series. A couple of other people added good points as well, regarding precedents and refunds.

Best thing to do is let the innocent teammates keep their medals, and bump everyone else up one so there are two gold medal teams.
