This would be the same Clarkson who announced that lost bank account information was nothing to worry about, and to prove it published his own account information and had 500 quid stolen out of his account, right?

First of all there was God, who said that if we carried on fornicating, a big seven-headed monster would gobble us up.

Well, it hasn't even got round to eating Warren Beatty yet, and he's spent most of his life fornicating

Excellent argument against religion right there...

Anyway, either he misunderstood what was said, or he's deliberately misinterpreting it.

Unless you can get your hands on the raw satellite data and somehow process it correctly, no one has the true numbers going back about 9 months and most researches don't have access to the data from as little as 1.5 years ago. Add in the whole sun doing its 11 year cycle thing differently than before (which effects the sat calibration a whole bunch) and there is a whole bunch of funny numbers which I believe can be used to prove the wold is flat and is about to get devoured by some 7 headed monster.

If global warming was anything more than a "theory", Jesus would have talked about it in the Bible. And he didn't.

I'm sure, because my copy has all the words he said printed in red, and he didn't talk about that stuff at all.

But now, the World Meteorological Organisation has announced that this year, the world will actually cool down a bit.

For those of you who may not be aware of why this is so retarded, some background.

The WMO expressly stated that warming was continuing[1]. Somehow the BBC managed to misreport that as "Global temperatures 'to decrease'". The WMO contacted them and the piece was corrected for clarity[2]. Of course denialists are claiming that it was because of an email by an environmentalist, which the writer dismisses definitively[3].

Anthropogenic warming does not mean that temperature will increase monotonically. On shorter timescales, natural variability can and will dominant the warming signal. Every year is not going to be warmer than the one before it.

Global Warming is true! All the scientists voted that it was!

How can you doubt all the scientific discoveries that were made by consensus, like . . . um . . . and . . . er . . . uh . . .

I heard some AM radio ad for some book detailing what I guess this author felt were "Conservative" points on education, etc. Called something like "No Intelligence Allowed" or something of that sort. From what I could gather from the ad, it seemed to largely discuss Intelligent Design, and possibly climate change.

The only reason I bring it up--and the only reason I remember it, was for the little line at the end, which said something like:

"Find out what Big Science doesn't want you to know."

Seriously. "Big Science."
I laughed. And cried.

Meh, most of those arguments are far too reasonable, you're supposed to word them in a way that straw-mans them into sounding unreasoned and silly.

1/10

But yeah, this guy is one of the nuts; no credibility whatsoever. There are plenty on both sides... which I bet makes most of the sane actual climate scientists a bit uncomfortable-- being allied with zealots tends to grate on the nerves of scientists horribly.

vat_man: I note with some interest that your graph commences at 1979. Got anything going back a bit further, say to 1700?

Not my graph. It's the two satellite-derived air temperature records, dating from when the first monitoring satellite went up. (by the University of Alabama Huntsville and Remote Sensing Systems)

I don't think it's controvertial - other than it doesn't quite agree with the concensus surface temperature records. Not that the surface and air temperatures need to agree fully.

I present no further argument in any direction.

Not today, anyway.

Hey Jon, you're going to have to modify your bingo to include scientists have been predicting global warming since at least the 1930's, when one of the first articles about it was published in the newspapers. It's funny, if I sat on a corner fortelling of the end of the world, from a religious perspective, for 70+ years, people would consider me batshait crazy. But if scientists do the same thing, they cannot be questioned.

The sat and surface temps agree just fine.

i30.tinypic.com

What you have done, intentionally or not, is cherry pic the series to end with a coldish (but still warmer than average January and not show the warming trend as it extends back to the 19th century.

i25.tinypic.com

Temperatures are already rebounding, and the current La Nina seems to be weakening as well.

The Northern Hemisphere, by virtue of its greater landmass, has a bit more influence on global temps than the Southern. Thus using temps while the Northern Hemisphere is in winter will give a disproportionately cold impression than the mean anomaly for the entire year. Should the Northern Hemisphere have a record summer (it isn't supposed to, AFAIK), the picture would be much different. This is why temp is usually presented through the most recent year in its entirety.

It's all extremist religious belief. That is, the actual old-style nut jobs (bible thumpers, plane crashers, etc.) and the new bible thumpers (global warming freaks, gaia lovers, and the hard core left remnants of the 70s-80s, the chomskys etc.). They all cling fanatically to an ordered, intelligently designed view of the universe which is utterly internally consistent, superficially appealing, and wrong. It seems that around a third to maybe half or so of the population has a powerful need to reduce the complexity of life to slogans to give them something to order their lives around, something to hang on to in what is otherwise to them a distressingly ambiguous world.

"The Bible Says So!!!" "It's Peer-Reviewed!!!". (both of them:) "Anyone who disagrees is evil!!!"

You heard it here first (?): The Global Peer Reviewed Freaks will change within three years to Global Cooling. Man is causing Global Cooling. Yeah, we said global warming, but we really meant global cooling. Our new totally cool peer-reviewed religious texts are now totally like perfect. Cooling, yeah, that's the ticket. Jon Snow: Not this shiat again.

Yes, this again. What's wrong snowjob??? Is your precious religion getting busted again???

To be fair, it is not a religion, more of a cult.

The party is wrapping up on the whole global warming BS. Your side lost. It turns out that AlGore was wrong!!! Who woulda thunk it???

Like I told you before, your boys tried to apply 150 or so years of semi accurate data to a planet that is 4.5 billion years old.

Yep, the factories will continue to run, cars will continue to run on gas (except the ones that use corn oil). Corn oil that requires 3.5 barrels of real oil to produce 1 barrel of corn oil. Yea, ya didn't think that one through either. Looks good on the surface, but doesn't stand up to a logical, intelligent assessment.

Look at your great messiah - Al Gore. The man's house in TN uses more coal based energy than most of the state. But that is okay because he sends money to a green organization. Of course, he is the CEO of that organization, so it is just taking money from his right pocket and putting it in the left pocket. Or how about his great idea last summer to personally attend all of the rally/concerts for Global warming? It took a lot of talking to get him to understand that he would be using up a lot of hydro-carbons for no good reason.

When they come around with the kool-aid, you should pass.

THIS2

I underlined the only part of your post thank I didn't agree with. I think these people (Global Warming Alarmists) have found a good surrogate for religion, and will cling to it for maybe ten or fifteen more years, until the next be eco-scare shows up. Then they throw 'Global Warming' under the bus with the Spotted Owl.

Once they started the, "Global Warming skeptics are the same as Holocaust deniers" routine, they lost all respect.

2008-04-13 11:55:08 AM
Here are 2005, 2007, and 2008 from GISTEMP to further illustrate how cherry picking January 2008 temps will give a false impression of "cooling". 2005 is the hottest year on record, 2007 is tied for second for GISTEMP.

i32.tinypic.com

If those presenting the mainstream view of climate science wished to use the same bullshiat cherrypicking tactics of the denialists, they would isolate March 2008 and claim that 2008 was hotter than the second warmest year on record, and almost as hot as the hottest.

This is why you take the most recent year in its entirety and in in the context of the overall record in order to make meaningful statements rather than using such incredibly tiny timescales to give a distorted impression one way or the other.

That pretty much flies in the face of the logic of your argument:

CO2 is increasing EVERY YEAR.

CO2 increases cause the temperature to rise.

But only when it fits in with your silly ass theory, huh snowjob??

If we object because nature is not adhering to your theory, well we just don't understand the theory. That is BS, pure and simple. What the WMO report really says is that the Earth can take care of itself. The report is a clear indicator that man is not the great power screwing up the planet.
