Kohl: WFern:
You're right. I mean, it's not like residents of San Francisco are among the most educated and affluent in the country.

Oh wait...

It's 1:30 in the afternoon in the City. The educated people are at work. you're seeing the leftovers.

Because lawyers, professors, university students, and the like never take time from work and business. Take a look at any major protest in the last half century.

Savoir-Faire: For everyone cheering this on: How would you feel if when Chicago has the Olympics, people around the world snuff the torch because of us in Iraq?

As a non-american, I would participate in this.

2008-04-09 04:29:14 PM
Savoir-Faire: The Olympics are not supposed to be about politics

They've always been about politics.

floor9: GAT_00 Yeah, there's no reason to protest China or the people who are, though indirectly, supporting their policies.

That's right, because the runners are clearly responsible for all of China's actions throughout history up to and including this moment.

By taking part in the torch ceremony for the least deserving Olympics since 1932, yes, they are supporting the actions of China and saying there is nothing wrong with their policies.

The torch ceremony is more about the country hosting it than the Olympics. And holding the torch for China is saying 'I Support China.' They are a legitimate protest target.

MmmBadEggs: So I'm torn here. Beat the torch guy? Beat the Chinese? Beat the protestors? Or all of them!? I just don't know anymore...

you can dislike more than just one person.

Y2Jericho: WFern: deltabourne: Hey, let's violently disrupt a symbolic flame procession for an international event that represents unity and brotherhood above politics! That'll show them that we want peace!

Hey, let's remain silent and smiling while a dictatorship commits genocide, then reward them for it! Go "progress!"

Funny how Saddam was doing the same thing in Iraq...

Zing!!!

Friction8r: Enuratique Internet Tough Guy rears his mug.

No, really. If I were carrying the torch and some loser wanted to mess with me, a light mist of combustible matter followed by a torching would be delectable and justified. Protestors have no right to assault someone, so I'm pretty sure I'd get away with spontaneously combusting an asshat hippie, and likely receive the Medal of Freedom in the process.

HURF DURF DURF DURRRRR.

If they manage to steal the torch... then what?

ARe they going to ask the eternal flame to free tibet? Silly homo protestors, go back to your public restrooms.

CNN says they put the torch on a boat.

I never thought I would be so interested in watching something flaming in San Francisco..not that anything is wrong with that? right?

2008-04-09 04:31:12 PM
MmmBadEggs: On one hand, I agree that China is a fu*king hell-hole that's defecating all over Tibet, and that much attention should be brought to the situation.

On the other, every protestor you hear on the radio sounds like the typical whiny, guilty, rich white college-age know-it-all "mommy and daddy will pay for everything forever"-type of brat, and those people make my skin crawl.

So I'm torn here. Beat the torch guy? Beat the Chinese? Beat the protestors? Or all of them!? I just don't know anymore...

Let's just wipe our butts with the Chinese during the games! That'll teach 'em not to crap on Tibet!
WOOOO!!! Amuurica! F(uck Yeah!

Are there Chinese officials dressed in those snazzy baby-blue tracksuits again? Thems are teh sexyzlol. Specially when they beat the hell out of the protesters lolkthxbye

WFern:
Funny that I didn't claim assaulting runners was the answer. Nice strawman you've made there.

It's not a strawman if you're approving of the protesters, the protesters who just happen to be doing exactly that: assaulting the runners so they can make a meaningless gesture instead of any sort of assembled effort to actually stop the problems in China.floor9: The_Sponge: Or at the very least, not holding up traffic like a spoiled AW.

Seriously, although I'm often repulsed by the conduct of our resident TF Neocons and Republicans, I can't wait for them to come into this thread and start beating some heads.

Oh god, I was crying laughing when I saw the Critical Mass riders [whose sole purpose is to get in everyone's way as another truly valuable protest against people having to travel long distance, make deliveries, or haul materials] getting upset when cars did not respect their childish shiat. One old man ran over someone's bike, and the riders were screaming like he'd thrown a puppy off a cliff.

Hey, let's remain silent and smiling while a dictatorship commits genocide, then reward them for it! Go "progress!"

unless you're talking human rights violations in China, the only thing you've rewarded are the Tibetans who massacred people under the shielded guise of their own international image.

Then again perhaps it's best to not politicize the Olympics so that future games won't be filled with copycat lunatics who have the same idea. WHen the USA gets to host again, do you want a bunch of Frenchies throwing piss on the torch? Your short sighted ignorance says "yes please! kick me in the arse!"

I don't know what I dislike more - the sham of the Olympics coupled with the thuggery of the Chinese or the general foolishness of San Francisco.

Hmmm - I have to admit I've enjoyed all my visits to San Francisco. So I vote that the Chinese "flame guards" all get knocked on their asses by Castro Queens and the torch gets thrown into the bay.

2008-04-09 04:31:59 PM
WFern: Nice strawman you've made there.

I do not think that word means what you think it means. Since I haven't established a false counterpoint in order to distract attention from how ridiculous your claims were, it doesn't fall under that category at all. Nor is it a fallacy in the slightest. In response to "Hey, let's violently disrupt a symbolic flame procession for an international event that represents unity and brotherhood above politics! That'll show them that we want peace!", you replied with:

WFern: Hey, let's remain silent and smiling while a dictatorship commits genocide, then reward them for it! Go "progress!"

You most certainly are defending their actions. Just because you say you're not backpedaling doesn't mean you aren't.

And for the record, if you want a good example of a strawman argument, attempting to attack my posts by claiming I've demonstrated logical fallacies when in fact no such fallacy existed in the first place is a pretty good one.

Sorry; you're just not as clever as you think you are.

Apples01: So what's the deal with all this Tibet stuff again?

Due to its remote nature Tibet was a very back asswards religious state/region of sorts in China.
After WWII The Peoples army took it over.
Dali Lama fled.
We hate the commies so we via the CIA funding and training they faught them for a while.
It got no place.
Tibet is probably better off than it was back in the 40's-50's.
The Dali Lama wants it to be the same status as Hong Kong Not even "Free" in the sense of a country on its own.

I think that about sums it up.
I think that is the jist of it.

they are getting the message out there, which is pretty much the definition of a succesful protest.

also anytime the chinese government receives a FAIL, i'm happy so i find myself in the odd position of supporting hippy protestors

People need to stop being retarded. The Olympiad is one of the only ways we bring our world together as one, and we're protesting it just because of where it's held this year? It's idiotic. Yeah, maybe China doesn't follow the same philosophic trends that we do, and yeah, maybe their treatment of one of their occupied states is immoral in our view, but why should we let that get in the way of having a good time with our fellow man?

2008-04-09 04:33:05 PM
WFern: Funny that I didn't claim assaulting runners was the answer.

Well, since your initial comment was in direct response to a comment about violently disrupting the ritual, you can see how one might think you were.

Because if there's one thing that really pisses off neocons and Republicans, it's protesting against a communist nation.

1. The fact that Tibet was far from a paradise does not give China the right to bulldoze inward, ethnically cleanse the region, and resort to killing and torturing monks.

2. Everything is political. The Olympics have a history of being boycotted or protested for ages. We boycotted them over the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, they boycotted ours in return, and various nations have done the same for differing conflicts.

3. If a nation chose to boycott the Olympics in America over the occupation of Iraq, then yes, it's probably justified. Better than a strongly-worded letter.

2008-04-09 04:33:50 PM
The Olympics suck and so does China.

Kinda hidden in a warehouse closet. My guess is the torch will come out of the closet, play a little with Newsom and exit stage left.

mrtron Can he be defeated? Or are his internet toughness skills unmatched by mere men?

It's quite simple. Don't play with fire, you're likely to get burned. YouTube would crave and celebrate a torchbearer igniting a protestor. Instant legend and hero.

doyner: CaptainStooby: Why is the torch going through San Francisco (the protest capital of the US) in the first place? Couldn't China have decided to run the torch through a city where no one would notice or give a damn?

/like Billings, MT

This is what I was wondering.

The Red Chinese chose San Francisco because of its large Chinese-American population. The geniuses in Beijing are probably regretting that decision now.

Wow. That's quite a reach you've got there. So are you supporting China by being a member of TotalFark? After all, Drew resides in the US. And he pays taxes to the US. And the US is participating in the Olympics.

Torch carriers = Chinese government. I love it.

10$ says they are paid by the Chinese gov't, indirectly for sure but likely directly as well.

China is the new master of propaganda and deception. They have no shame or scruples in doing so. When I was in east asia during the Tibet incident, the news was filled with all this pro-chinese propaganda...they do it ridiculously well.
