FTFA:

Firstly, the countries on the relay route have attached great importance and given strong support to the Olympic flame.

Secondly, all Torch Relay cities have given strong support for the event.

Thirdly, the Olympic torch has received a warm welcome worldwide.

Fourthly, athletes from all over the world have joined the Beijing Olympic torch relay with great enthusiasm.

I'm noticing a theme here.

So apparently any backward-ass, country-fook, totalitarian, human-rights-violating regime can mosey up to the Olympic committee and easily convince them that their country is worthy of the Olympics.

Is the Olympic committee run by brain-dead fukkwits?

Yes.

Keep in mind that this is the same orginization which had the 1936 Games in Berlin ("you know who else was in Berlin in 1936?"), as well as the Winter Games in Mormonstan Utah.

What was wrong with doing the winter games in Utah? It was a resounding success according to my recollection.

Under the authorization of the International Olympic Committee, the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay is sharing the passion and glory of the Olympics with the world through its "Journey of Harmony." It has received a warm welcome from people throughout the Relay.

Actually it has been in Chinese media already. My local newspaper (in Qingdao, on the coast) has also printed pictures from the events in London and Paris. The article was not very nice towards the protestors but most Chinese I spoke to would get their information through the internet anyway. The Chinese Olympic commitee is just another propaganda institution that's far away from reality.

Fifthly, the most enthusiastic reception of the flaming torch is expected in China, where the first Olympics took place about 5000 years ago.

2008-04-09 04:30:42 AM
Um...

What I was taught ( incorrect or not )... was about a chance for competing countries i.e. enemies potentially at war... to perform those competitions without risk of life / limb of their citizens...

Yeah... maybe bs but a nice thought...

As for the butt-munches screwing with the torch...

Whats the purpose... if you REALLY want to do something and really are a MAJORITY - then you convince your gov't and athletes not to participate... thats the DEMOCRATIC way of doing things...

If you aren't a majority for your country...it sucks but focus on getting more supporters...

If you ARE a majority and that fact isn't counted ( even if it exists ) - turn off you TV... the 'Olympic Commitee' is all about ad $ these days anyway so hit them where it HURTS...

Come on people...

cantsleep: Just wait til the people of China are told that their glorious country swept every available medal at the games.

This.

I'd find it hilarious if the athletes busted out "free tibet" flags on the medal podium. What would the Chinese police do? Arrest the athletes? Shoot them down on the spot? Good luck (especially with the Israelis - they're specifically allowed to have armed guards, 1 per athlete, with them at all times as a result of the Munich Games - this is part of the contract with the host nation).

in some places it has, in the bottom third of the article it goes into some detail about the protests, all of the events listed actually did take place.

i'm not stating that china is the free media capital of the world but how many press releases have you read that accentuate the negative.

It's a boondoggle for the hosting country. It has nothing to do with fairness or real competition.

The Olympics are the exercise arm of the UN - just as biased and just as corrupt but with a better PR team.

The minute the US sent the "dream team" to play basketball was about the same time the games as a whole were exposed for the bullshiat they really are.
