No farking shiat. I grew up a total tomboy, coming home with dirt in my ears, nose, you name it. Not only did it not kill me; I don't get sick all that often either.

These Purell kids don't have a chance when it comes to dealing with the world's bacteria.

This just demonstrates yet another consequence of our "healthy and clean" world. We use so many antibiotics in our soaps, detergents, hand sanitizers, and livestock that bacteria we have successfully fought off for years have developed powerful tolerances.
What I find amusing is that the people who try to live the cleanest lives often pay the heaviest price. Many scientists attribute the recent rises in asthma rates in kids to the fact that they aren't allowed to own pets or play outdoors for long periods of time. I also recall reading somewhere that concerned mothers were bringing in babies and little kids to their pediatrician with rickets because the precious snowflakes were covered in so much sunscreen that they didn't get the UV needed to make vitamin D.
Kids are supposed to get filthy when the play outside. That's what immune systems are for.

My mom encouraged us to play in the mud. I can't stand people who's paranoia outstraps their common sense.

Most hand sanitizers use alcohol to sterilize. It's not the same thing as antibiotics which they can build up a resistance to.

/still wont use hand sanitizers.
//the bugs make me stronger!

Doctor Hooey: My mom encouraged us to play in the mud. I can't stand people who's paranoia outstraps their common sense.

When I was a kid, my brother and I built a bridge over the creek that runs through the neighborhood. About two miles upstream, there's a sewage treatment plant. Mom was not happy when we'd come home soaked up to our knees, but all she did was spray us down with the hose before she let us inside.

There were snapping turtles and wasps back there, and we wore sandals and threw rocks.

/no allergies
//10 toes

It stops you from getting pregnant, at least.

My mom would always go batshiat crazy when I would come home covered with mud. She just could not understand how absolutly fun it was, we had a very steep hill and it was a similar thrill to snow sledding.

When my kids and the neighbor kids do it now, I just turn the garden hose on and wash them off. I mean, wtf, they could be doing LDS or going to Young Republican meetings! Mud seems quite minor.

Dirt makes you grow.

damn mormons.

There are a couple of books out about this. The Dirt on Clean and another one. They point out that current Western society is the most obsessed with cleanliness out of any society that has ever existed, and our immune systems aren't getting the workout they need to fully develop.

Therefore my messy housy and semi-random showering habits are fully justified. Yeah, that's it.

Not my mother--my grandmother used to insist that a kid needed a peck of dirt a day.

The motto in our house is "A kid who comes home dirty is a kid who has had fun."

I drank creek water out in the boonies till I was about 10. I have no allergies (including poison ivy, sumac, oak) and I don't get sick, besides my left ear, which is due to a defect in my eustachian tube.
