Was the car not in Park

2008-04-05 01:47:25 PM
Ok someone explain this one to me please. If the car was an automatic wouldn't it have been in park? If so hitting the gas would have no effect in making the van move. If it had a manual transmission the ebrake would have to be on or it would roll right? I'm just confused how the dog made the van move.

I have been puzzling over this one for a couple minutes. I even RTFA a second time. An auto in gear will move from idling ... a stick left in gear would lurch and kill the motor as soon as she "parked it" ... you couldn't even leave the van without something happening. I smell shenanigans, or a trip to AAMCO. Or both.

the same thing just happened to my mom's friend last week.. she was an older lady and put the dog's leash around the shifter whenever she got out of the car.. there was something behind her car so she got out to pick it up and her dog managed to shift it into reverse.. the car ran her over repeatedly.. it was doing donuts and just kept running her over until her neighbor saw what was happening and stopped it.. it killed her..

2008-04-05 02:10:39 PM
if the van had shift on the column, the dog could have hit the lever and put it in drive. Also, if the van was already on a slight incline, it is possible to idle in drive and not move until you give it some gas.

Actually, the dog wanted to kill the little biatch, eliminate the competition in the pack, know what I mean.

I'm guessing the dog also hit the...whatever you call the gear lever in an automatic. Either that or the woman farked up and doesn't want to admit it.

What-had-happened-was; the car was left in reverse and rolled over the kid. The dog was blamed because it was in the car at the time.

Think about how deep the gas petal is in most cars. My dog looks to be about the same size and she can't fit into the space to press the petal.

She also has trouble changing gears because she was born without opposable thumbs. She has to do every day task with her mouth, very sad.

Is everything in your car made of flowers, or just the controls?

how'd you miss that one?

2008-04-05 02:45:21 PM
Wow, that was dumb. I'll admit the first thought isn't having a dog jumping in the car and hitting the gas. The first thought is the 5yr old getting in the car and shifting it into drive...

Or perhaps hanging around the exhaust and inhaling the large quantities of CO coming from the pipe while they loaded the car with wood or whatever.

Oh, and with the current gas prices, this makes this doubly stupid.

Older cars' transmissions can pop out of Park more easliy. I once chased my Thunderbird (1964, TYVM) across an AM/PM parking lot.

/I live in Blount County so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies

2008-04-05 02:56:47 PM
I'll play Devil's Advocate: The van might have been resting on a slight slope, such that idling in reverse had enough power to hold its position but not enough to move it.

Well...I'm not sure if this is mine. I went on a spree this morning and submitted 3 stories, of course I haven't slept since yesterday and I'm about to go to bed, but my headline was nothing like this, although I did say 'some nbc10' so maybe they switched the headline but took my story. I dunno, does that happen?

But I do now have 2 approved submissions, and my first was a year or more ago, something like 'apple suck it, peecee users' (and on that day I went to bed and didn't know it got approved until 10 hours later and the comment page was stuffed and it would be pointless to say 'submitter here' then.

Heading back to nbc10.com to see if it can jolt me into remembering what my other submission was, oh yeah, now i remember: Boring family sues google to make their lives more interesting' or something like that, I kept submitting headlines that were too long so that previously quoted line is close to what I finally said, along with something pertaining to how its' the lawyers who win those stupid lawsuits, because even if your case is thrown out of court, you still have to pay your lawyer for the time they provided.
