People who consider art their career are likely to be less mentally fit than normal people? This should be news to nobody.

and body modification.....piercings, tatoos, scarring in extreme cases. Nothing new about the disturbed artist.

It is a common misconception that artists generally are more likely to be depressed, over-emotional, or some kind of mental-illness. Many studies have shown no correlation between emotional/mental disorders and creativity.

My $.02

doesn't surprise me a bit.

This comes as no surprise after you've seen Picasso's work.

Does this meant that if I think my dick is too short I'm artistic?

I'll buy it. I've got several friends who are majoring in art. They are all psycho about their bodies. I attribute a lot of it to the artistic eye. They see the beauty and imperfections in everything they look at. Artists are perfectionists, they obsess about it. It doesn't suprise me that they would obsess about the (im)perfections in thier bodies.

As someone who has been a professional artist for 20 years, I can tell you there's no such thing as an art career.

I think that it's actually a link between the chronically underemployed and body image dysmorphia.

For some reason, people who finish college with a whopping debt and no job prospects all start to obsess about their double chins. Strangest damn thing.

As an art major, I don't agree with this. But that's on a persoanl level. I could see how soem of my peers could have this "problem." And as for artists being stereotypically metallly ill, that's bunk. I have no such problems myself... hey, gimme another six pack.

I'm an artist. I'm a writer. And I'm on anti-depressants. Go figure. :)

My favorite paragraph in the article? From the NIMH: "I think the initial premise and hypothesis is flawed...and I think they're making some pretty big leaps" to connect an appreciation of aesthetics with a preoccupation with imagined defects, she [Dr. Kathy HoganBruen] said.

You can find a correlation between anything. Doesn't necessarily make them related.

I'm (kinda) an artist, but I dont have body image problems. I do have one problem, though. I have a weird kinda mental disease called Aspergers Syndrome. It's rare in girls, and i've only realy know about it for a year, so it's kinda weird to deal with.

Art helps, though. Everyone in the basement ('Art Center') is as weird or weirder then I am.
