I like how they softball the reporting of the tasering.

An Orange County girl who punched a deputy at her school and was zapped with a Taser left the juvenile-detention center Friday and went home with her parents.

By "zapped" you mean "electrocuted"? Because that's what the taser does. Static on the carpet zaps you. A taser can drop a 300 lb enraged felon. You don't use them on 11-year olds.

In other news, police "plinked" a student with a .50 caliber rifle, and "tapped" several others with billy clubs.

I wish to know the country you're from. Really, because I'm sure we could find something much more disturbing.
For example, in Canada, if you assist in the rape and murder of your kid sister, and you're a woman, you can essentially skate by with little punishment.

I have worked in inclusive classroom environments and I have seen inclusion work really well. The little ones can be very sweet and want to play with the special needs student at recess.

At the same time I have also taught in a classroom with violent students and little support. I have seen Special Ed. Assistants have to physically restrain the student and receive black eyes, and numerous bruises in the process.

As a teacher, I welcome these students and do not mind adapting curriculum for them, but I need support from SEAs, or Child Care Workers so that I can focus on ALL my students.

/My 2 cents.

No, it is not safer to have five people jump on a person like this and hold them down.

No way it's justified. 170 lbs or no, there's NO WAY a learning disabled, untrained, anarmed 11 year old girl would pose a threat to an adult male officer. The officer should have smiled back at her and proceeded to restrain her without using the taser. Cops should not be tasering ANY resistant person they come in contact with. Only those who are unable to be controlled other ways.

There are LOTS of ways to hold a person without suffocating them. Some simply use leverage so even if they resist PCP style they won't dislocate or tear something.

God farking dammit, I am ashamed to say that I KNEW when I finished reading the article that the 11-year old was going to be black (see sjbiars') picture above.

Not because of what the girl did.
Not because of what the mother said.
Because the boy that she initially pushed into the road showed up in court to support her.
I immediately had the assumption that he (also likely black) did this in court because he was told by his friends and/or parents to deny everything, since "snitches get stitches".

It's so hard to not form stereotypes when everybody's acting so damn stereotypically....

A taser uses a very small amount of energy. They are usually pretty harmless, unless the target has a heart condition or is on drugs that could cause heart failure. Tasing a 170 pound girl is much less risky the beating her into submission. In both cases you risk injury, but a taser is much less likely to cause permanent damage.

2008-03-29 09:15:13 PM
The cop was a woman? I need to read more carefully. I still stand by the idea that for cops the main form of physical interaction with non cooperative contacts has become gun or taser - physical control seems to have gone out the window. Wrestling may look bad, but when done by a properly trained individual can be very domination while still being far less painful than a taser. (course it can be rather painful as well - grappling farkers may appreciate the "shoulder of justice" or "barbed wire" techniques)

2008-03-29 09:15:38 PM
Cops that can't control an 11 year old without a taser shouldn't be cops.

It's not sexist either ..... I know many women that could that could've handled that situation without electrocuting a child.

Police suck.

To be fair, you could have easily assumed that the parents of that kid were just PC liberal pussies, who think it's "okay" when children without full mental capabilities are violent and go on the attack.

I don't know, I think people of all races, creeds, colors, and philosophies happen to think that it's everyone BUT their child who is the problem, so the "PC liberal" parents card wasn't the one that jumped out at me in this case. Wasn't until the mom talked about the boy who was bullied in court supporting her that I attached the possible racial qualifier.

2008-03-29 09:23:51 PM
Oh, and the voltage listed for the taser she used was either a typo (1,200 Volts), or about 50 times less potent than the average police taser. Considering this officer works exclusively with students, it would make sense. They may not boost the voltages of these versions.

2008-03-29 09:24:51 PM
I say PC liberal as someone who is more "liberal" socially speaking... but there are way too many parents that complain about anything.

2008-03-29 09:25:03 PM
Ikronix: eqtworld: The whole point of the tazer was to give the police another option besides shooting someone.

Not This.

It's not a lethal force alternative, it's a less lethal force alternative. (e.g. whacking someone with a club)

That makes absolutely no sense. There is no such thing as degrees of lethal. It either is or it isn't.

2008-03-29 09:28:56 PM
Someone had it right whan they said tasers are a substitute for a billy club? So who really thinks that in a taserless world, this 11 year-old needed to be struck by a club?

2008-03-29 09:29:56 PM
Okay, that needs to be repeated. 1,200 volts, folks. 1,200 volts.

The low rating for a typical Taser is TENS OF THOUSANDS of volts.

JohnnyC: Unless an 11 year old has a gun or a knife or something similar, there is absolutely no reason a taser should be used on them. I mean seriously.

Learning disabled = not dangerous? I know cases of "learning disabled" kids that have killed other kids and even adults, or commited other extremely violent and sick acts.

I think you're the one that's learning disabled.

As someone that has a family member that has taught special ed for many years, people with mental disabilities can show immense strength when they go into a rage, compared to the average person, whether they're 11 years old or not.
The fact that the kid broke the cops nose should probably indicate that this was NOT a normal 11 year old girl.

I guess you guys advocate beating her with a baton or slamming her to the ground rather than using the taser though, because that would have been much more humane and less likely to cause injury.

2008-03-29 09:35:39 PM
Chaghatai Someone had it right whan they said tasers are a substitute for a billy club? So who really thinks that in a taserless world, this 11 year-old needed to be struck by a club?

Apparently she was in an out-of-control rage. Several people had already been assaulted, and she was too big/strong for the adults to control. What alternatives would you prefer? Dart gun?

SHE HOSPITALIZED A COP! Omigod, how else were they supposed to control her? Ask her politely? She's obviously behaviorally disabled, so some form of physical force was necessary. I'd much rather they Tasered her than six or seven cops bodyslammed her. She would have much more likelihood of being hurt that way.

Seriously.

Cop was a woman, so maybe she was intimidated not knowing enough about physical control to control a child who outweighs her, but no way a man should be in the slightest. And 170 ain't all that big - Kinda average for an american male based on observations.

2008-03-29 09:40:25 PM
Incidentally, for those of you throwing around the word "electrocuted" ... nobody got "electrocuted." Electrocution = death.

2008-03-29 09:42:22 PM
Anybody stop to consider that in the heat of the moment that the officer may not have known that the 170 pound person coming at her swinging was 11, and possibly mentally impaired? Reaching for your school appointed, low powered taser you're taught to use may, in fact, have been the correct response in that situation

2008-03-29 09:42:45 PM

Has to be a typo. A shock from relatively low voltage (like 110 or even 1200) is much more dangerous than the higher voltage that tasers and electric cattle fences use. 1200 would probably stop your heart, a 25kv fencer hurts but doesn't do any damage (and yes, I've been hit several times by a fencer).
