If you are the mother of a 170-pound, learning-disabled 11 year old, perhaps you deserve a good tasering.

Such venom for the mother of child with learning disabilities and mental problems, subby.

Either:

1) She's doesn't really have a learning disabilty (mom probably browbeat a therapist into diagnosing her little non-violent, never does this angel as being hyperactive...ADD...ADHD...autistic ...Aspergers);

2) She *is* learning disabled and this is why trying to "mainsteam" these kids is a bad idea.

Special Ed classes where teachers are specially trained to know how to deal with her and everyone is on the same basic level? Nah...better to just let her take classes with the rest of the kids (and pull them all down, as the teacher has to devote and inordinate amount of time to a very small percentage of the class), but tell her teachers they aren't allowed to ever tell her, "No," or that she has to be given an extra hour for tests, or that she can't do any homework. You know, really prepare her for the real world.

If it went down the way everybody is saying it did, it sounds justified.

And yes, the spokeswoman was a cuti pie

Three words: Least restrictive environment(p)

It sucks, and parents of lots of "special" children are some of the nastiest and most litigious people on Earth. You wouldn't believe the legal legwork involved to get a special child into a self-contained (non-mainstream) classroom.

My wife is a public high school teacher. My mother is a Special Ed aid, who has been working with the same group of kids for about 10 years now. She has "graduated" with them, and stayed with them year after year. A few years back, when they graduated 12th grade, she figured she would get a new set of youngsters and start all over. Not quite. A parent of one of the students sued the county on the grounds that the county has to provide education until the age of 21...so off the college they went! Community college, but college none the less.

I guess what I'm saying is, "Yes, I do believe." I see and hear about it all too often. You don't think I pulled those IEP (Individualized Education Plan) details out of thin air do you? ;)

Unless an 11 year old has a gun or a knife or something similar, there is absolutely no reason a taser should be used on them. I mean seriously.

Tasers have essentially become a new way for cops to assault people...

The whole point of the tazer was to give the police another option besides shooting someone.

Not as the default thing to use on any suspect who is struggling.

I feel for the mom. Learning-disabled kids with behavioral issues can be extremely hard to manage no matter how good your parenting skills are. Imagine a 170-lb kid with the impulse control of a 2-year old.

You know I think one of the biggest problems with tasers are the nickname "Stun-gun" I think that confused people. It doesn't haplessly paralyze you, it just puts you in so much pain you can't think.

Cops are pinned down by a lot of bureaucratic crap run mostly by lawyers and bean counters. Procedure is basically being driven towards low level fascism because it is profitable for the supporters of certain politicians (read tactical supply industries).

It doesn't help that cops seem to limit the intelligence of its officer candidates.

Thinking for oneself is disdained in most police depts. these days, particularly in situations like this.

Bullshiat. If someone is physically violent and noncompliant, a Taser is a superior alternative to trying to wrangle them to the ground. The Taser puts a quick stop to the situation, and no one ends up with any broken bones. Further, if the cop has to physically take someone down, there's always a chance that the subject will get their gun.

Not This.

Once again, the little turd was out trying to push another kid into traffic and then punched a cop in the face. Her weight and size put her on par with an average full grown man, and significantly larger than an average grown woman.

Yes that was original the intention of the tazer. Once they had it though, they began using it in this manner because, surprise, it's better for you than being wrestled and joint locked into submission, or beaten with a really hard club. Furthermore it keeps them from getting sued when you get hurt fighting with them. And lets you subdue a violent-man-sized-"child" without weirdos making a big fuss in the media about you manhandling them, or hurting them because you just had to tackle and restrain them instead of using a tool meant to subdue them without harm.

This politically correct BS of coddling takes resources away from students who WANT TO LEARN. But then again the Teacher's Unions would have to TEACH our children. Can't have that, can we? Can't have vouchers as that would prove how bad trade union teachers are in the first place...

When an independant & clinically objective doctor & a psychologist tell the court the child does indeed have a learning disability, I'll maybe feel some sympathy.

In a way, however, the mother was right about her wee darling being not a regular 11-year-old. Most 11 y/o's know well enough not to hit anyone carrying a taser.

Until then, the deputy sounds justified in defending herself with her taser after she was assaulted by the little ba$tard.

imo all the adults epic fail as adults
any officer who is unable to control an 11 yo girl (no matter the girls size) without resorting to a weapon, should not be an officer.
This officer would be unable to keep an adult from taking his/her weapon away.
If this was a 17 yo male, this incident would have probably have ended with one or more fatalities

IIRC the "officer" was a half assed school cop/advisor or something, who let her guard down and got socked in the face. She used to tazer to avenge her humiliation.

I think the girl deserved to be tazed for being a trainwreck at such an early age, and I think the cop deserved to be punched because no cop worth a crap will ever let someone close enough to them to get attacked like that. If that were a real criminal she might've had a lot more to worry about than a broken nose.

Whoa! Slow down there. You are conflating two COMPLETELY different issues!

Teachers have NOTHING to do with the school systems' "coddling" of students. No sane teacher wants anything to do with a problem kid, and would probably want them expelled.

The school system is limited in its ability to deal with farked up students because of the damn parents suing everything in sight.

Private School vouchers vs. Teachers' Unions is a completely different issue, and I don't see how it's relevant here.

Actually a taser is supposed to provide an alternative to a retractible steel baton, not a gun. While tasers can be abused (like any other weapon) they generally cause much less pain an trauma then beating someone into submission with a pepper spray and a club. I know that I would much rather be tasered. Broken bones and muscle trauma take months to heal, while most people recover from a taser the same day.
