(USA Today)   Starbucks baristas, remember that court ruling saying that supervisors have to share tips with you? Well, Starbucks is going to ignore that ruling. Now, go make a venti triple latte   (usatoday.com) divider line 222

Stealing tips SMOOTH

2008-03-28 10:26:50 PM
Starbucks pays ALL of its employees crap. It was always understood that tips are shared by everyone. Since management don't want to give their line supervisors a raise, they're ignoring this judgement. Blame the bigwigs, not the store supervisors.

/never employed by or patronized a Starbucks

You know, judges get REALLY pissed when you ignore their orders.
Great legal strategery there, Starbucks. Is this guy your lawyer?

Store supervisors are just that -- supervisors. TFA says that state law in California prohibits managers/supervisors from sharing tips (IANAL, but that's what it says). Plus, you do not get to just ignore a court order.

May this judge give Starbucks the ass-farking they deserve for this.

if you ordered a "venti triple latte" from them, those smug bastards would correct you with "do you mean a triple venti latte?"

at least the farkers at the sbucks near me do this. i think they're trained to be asstards.

Their business model is to piss off their employees?

2008-03-29 01:32:11 AM
"baristas" is an extremely stupid word and should be banned from the language

FTFA: Starbucks responded in the statement that "shift supervisors are not managers and have no managerial authority."

Is that what you tell the IRS when it comes to paying overtime?

Let's see if this judge has a set. If he does nothing then I would guess that pretty much anybody can ignore his orders when they don't agree with him.

2008-03-29 01:34:18 AM
It doesn't seem like explicitly and willfully violating a ruling of the court is something they could get away with.

2008-03-29 01:36:14 AM
Do some of those supervisors take orders, ring up purchases, or make the damn coffee? If so, they deserve a cut of the tips.

AntiNorm: May this judge give Starbucks the ass-farking they deserve for this.

Shutdown every Starbucks in CA for a week. That would be wonderful. Yuppies would go nuts.

/Yuppie that doesn't drink starbucks
//Or coffee for that matter

2008-03-29 01:36:20 AM
Shift sups should get tips, they do the same amount of work + more and barely get paid extra.

ALSO starbucks isn't so bad, they have good health benefits. Better than the rest of the service industry as far as that is concerned.

/worked at starbucks for a year
//only was a lowly barista
///doesn't feel they are "stealing" my tips.

Why shouldn't they get to ignore this ruling while they appeal?

The government continues to enforce laws that have been struck down while they appeal. The IRS collects and assesses taxes that have been found unconstitutional while they're appealing the law.

The government splits finer hairs than this when interpeting rulings not in its favor, so I'm glad Starbucks is doing this.

they do all of the above

2008-03-29 01:37:39 AM
The court ruling said that supervisors do not get to share in tips. Headline makes it seem like the supervisors get to keep the tips to themselves.

2008-03-29 01:37:54 AM
All shift supervisors do the same duties baristas do. They all serve customers just the same - they just handle the money before and after shifts. They deserve the tips seeing they do the same work if not more.

Now managers - they don't work the bar, so they don't get tips.

2008-03-29 01:39:48 AM
Who the hell tips at Starbucks anyway?

2008-03-29 01:39:51 AM
Let's get one thing straight:

Giving the coffee shop equivalent of the fry guy at McDonald's the title "barista" is beyond pretentious.

2008-03-29 01:40:23 AM
If a shift supervisor works alone for a day, who gets the tips? hmm

Yup. This seems a bit silly to me, as I don't tip in restaurants (and I'll include Starbucks in that category) that don't provide table service.

/Tipping at Starbucks would be like tipping at McDonald's or Chipotle

jshine: /Tipping at Starbucks would be like tipping at McDonald's or Chipotle

I picked up dinner at Chipotle just this evening (yesterday evening, Friday, anyway), and there was a tip jar on the counter. Same thing with the gas station Subway I got lunch from: They had one too.

This tip jar crap is getting annoying.

"When I read these headlines about Starbucks skimming or stealing from our partners it's just beyond my comprehension how irresponsible it is," the CEO said.

I always like it when companies refer to their worker drones as "partners" like their name is on the door in gold leaf next to the CEO's.

Oh, I hope the judge gets REALLY pissed and gives them 30 days to pay or he revokes Starbucks license to do business in the State of California. That would be sooo funny.

Truly. I find it offensive on some level when someone who is being paid to stand there and basically hand me crap puts out a begging jar.

On the other hand, if I was making shiat wages I'd be a little on the desparate side too. When I'm feeling generous I'll toss them my coin change, if I'm paying with cash.

Every time I see the word 'baristas' I think of "Federales".

That's probably why during most of my trips into Starbuck's, I end up in a pistola fight while ducking behind a donkey.

You've got a point there, except whatever Starbucks does won't change that. It should, but it won't.

Meh, they're only baristas. It's not like it's a job that requires substantial skill.

Yeah, government thugs throwing their weight around is always funny. It's particularly funny when their actions cost their employer millions in taxes and they have their job cut out from under them by other government thugs.

Reminds me of the crappiest place i ever worked. We were called "associates" like it was a great honor to be associated with the company. In academia now. Just give me a desk and use my name OK?

2008-03-29 02:03:14 AM
Headline is misleading. The ruling made it illegal for the shift supervisor to receive a share of the tips. I've never worked at SB so I'm not sure how it works there, but usually shift supervisors are basically entry level employees with extra tasks, they still work register, make drinks or whatever.

Anyone ever work at SB know for sure?

2008-03-29 02:04:35 AM
What is up with the Starbucks "barista" attitude anyway? I've never been a fan of Starbucks' coffee, I don't like the flavor, but when others are going I'll sometimes get a coffee. Eight out of ten times the employees are either rude or very close to it. They're just entirely unfriendly, they have this "I'm hip, stop talking to me" attitude, they're freakin' Starbucks coffee brewers. They make it easy for me to laugh at their tip jars.

I once tried to take three cents out of a Cosi tip jar and the girl got pissed at me. If it was marked "Tips" and wasn't full of pennies I might've known it wasn't a give-a-penny-take-a-penny dish.

2008-03-29 02:05:20 AM
When I'm shaking them down for protection money, is it ok for me to take a cut of the tips?

/Don't drink coffee
//Teabags!

uknowzit: /and I want a regular coffee. Not a venti, or grande, a regular coffee.

Exactly. Anyone who would order a "super triple venti cinnamon mocha cappuccino with whipped cream and caramel topping" is just a *little* on the pretentious side. If I need coffee in the morning, I'll pick up a Frappuccino from 7-11 on my way into work. The only time I go to Starbucks is to get a quad shot of espresso (although, I know of a coffee shop here in town that sells a drink with SIX shots of espresso for less than a Starbucks quad-shot).

Jument: Truly. I find it offensive on some level when someone who is being paid to stand there and basically hand me crap puts out a begging jar.

I was catching a connecting flight in Charlotte last August, and found out that that airport has bathroom attendants. I had heard of them, but until then, I had never actually seen any place with bathroom attendants. They hand you paper towels, and in exchange, you're supposed to drop a buck into the large tip box near the door. Un-be-farking-lievable.

I'm not giving you $1 to hand me a damn paper towel. These people are basically just glorified panhandlers, IMO.

I'm not here to pass judgment on whether the supervisors deserve to share in the tips or not. I do not know enough about the conditions. I will say that Starbucks is being a giant douche of a company if they're just going to ignore court orders like that. If they think it's wrong, they should attempt to appeal it. If they don't want to do that, they better be prepared to pay some sort of fee that will end up costing more than it would to just give the supervisors a raise so it doesn't matter anymore. They're acting like a bunch of idiots.

Bathroom attendants are really there to prevent anything unseemly from going on in a bathroom. That's why they are typically found in dicier establishments like strip clubs and nightspots. Now then, what was recently in the news concerning airport bathrooms being the new crise spot for closeted homosexuals?
