"The right of free expression is not at stake here," he added. "Freedom must always be accompanied by social responsibility."

Ahhh, the new code phrase for restricted speech. "We're sorry, your right to express yourself might make someone else angry. Please go sit in the corner and be quiet."

It's a mad race to see if the ultra left or the ultra right will manage to quash free speech first!

My favorite quote on the subject:

"Everyone knows there's a difference between a Muslim and a Terrorist. The problem is that nobody knows what that difference is."

Liveleak had to remove all videos of that film because of death threats.

Having a naked Jesus in a homosexual scene: OK, it's art.
Having a cartoon of Muhammad: Bad, it's insensitive.

Fine. I just issued a fatwa against the U.N.

And a cartoon of Jesus and Mohamed being homosexuals? GOLD.

Except it didn't do much of anything.

Muslims are such pussies for throwing tantrums whenever a little criticism comes their way.

nashBridges: It's a mad race to see if the ultra left or the ultra right will manage to quash free speech first!

My money is on the left. Right wingers spend too much time arguing about whether killing babies, raising taxes, or outlawing guns is worse to be effective totalitarians. Left wingers are all united behind the banner that all who do not agree with and obey them must be silenced at all costs. That's unity baby.

Social Responsibility = Don't say something that causes people to reasonably act in a dangerous way.

Brag about having a bomb in your bag in an airport. Reasonable people panic, things can get dangerous.

But it's not a reasonable reaction to kill people and riot because you don't like what someone else says; therefore no one has any responsibility to restrict their speech for it.

This seems fairly reasonable. He's not saying the film will be banned, or even that it should be banned, he's just saying that it's inflaming hatred, which it sounds like it is (though I haven't seen the film), that it's misleading, and that it's racist. Just because the Dutch MP has the right to do this doesn't mean it's a good idea or that people can't say he's wrong. I have the right to call you, the reader of this post, all sorts of offensive things, but that doesn't mean I'm not being a wanker if I do so.

Personally, I think this Dutch guy should be allowed to say all the rubbish he's saying, and I also think that he should refrain from making use of that right because it seems like he's being a bigotted idiot

You insensitive bastards, can't you see that the film has only been made to make them mad. We should all be more tolerant of their ways and do nothing that might upset them. Only then can we live in peace. And we should.... Ah hell who am I kidding, they can all diaf ball for all I care. Religion of peace my ass.

I forgot to add that Muslims should, of course, refrain from responding to criticism, no matter how offensive, with acts or threats of violence.

Bombing the shiat out of Muslims = OK

Movies about their dumb religion = not OK

2008-03-28 06:54:42 PM
The world's most populous Muslim nation, Indonesia, also condemned the film, saying it was "misleading and full of racism".

Ermmm....it contained clips of muslims making racist remarks against non-muslims, otherwise that's a bit of an embellishment. Ashamed much?

Ahh, the UN. Protectors of free speech* the world over.

/they also claim to respect self defense*, but don't support gun ownership. What good does supporting a hypothetical right do if you won't allow it to be put into practice?

FTA: The film sets verses from the Koran against a background of violent images from terror attacks.

Stop bringing thoughtful insight and common sense into a matter dealing with Freedom of Speech and Islam.

What's the problem here ? Dutch MP made a racist film, UN Secretary General issued his own statement condemning it. Everyone gets to keep their freedom to speak. Every gets to say what they want.

Excellent video. Thanks for that. I especially liked his analogy that "reason to religion is like sunlight to a vampire." Islam is absolutely nuts. I don't care how you practice it. Even its scriptures are plagiarized.

UNC_Samurai: Whatever happened to the film Van Gough's descendant was working on?

Well, he released part 1, and was stabbed to death for it by a wacko. The title is called something like "Obsession - Radical Islam's War Against The West, Submission Part 1"

part 2 is probably still going to come out through that woman MP who also needs around the clock police protection because the wackos don't like that a woman gets to speak. They're all about the man-man love after all.

As far as Fitna is concerned, yes it was pulled off the liveleak site, however it was mirrored, and due to the magic of bittorrent it lives on, on the internet. The original is a 37 meg FLV file.. the avi and mp3s floating around are conversions from that FLV.. there are 2, both the same, one in dutch and one in english.

2008-03-28 07:00:19 PM
Religion has been the locus of control for the "average person" (think global IQ, not American) since the dawn of time. Radical Imams are just taking advantage of this fully.

Maybe we should bomb the world in general with an IQ bomb. Maybe then things will improve. You don't have to be stupid to be a ditch digger. You can be an educated ditch digger.

Not "should"..."must". The UN supports restricting speech even beyond what the most out-there European states do.

Are the people in this thread wanting the Secretary General to *not* be permitted to speak out against this movie ?

I've just submitted a link to the video. it's called 'Fitna'.

It's not particularly racist, but pretty hard to watch.

Now let's see whether fark greenlights it, with or without a better headline.

What this film really needs is about a billion dollars for 2 sequels, and a shiatload of advertising. The man is right, this is religious fascism being fostered under the guise of 'tolerance'.

But his clarity is called into question when he delves into why Christianity's sins aren't the same as Arab atrocities.

Islam is a worse scourge on the existence of modern civilization then communism ever could have been and needs to be stomped out with just as much vigor.

Peaceful Muslims wanna disagree? Want to tell me how peace-loving, gentle and beautiful your religion is? How about that vast vast majority of good Muslims makes a little more effort to clean the scum of Islamo-fascists out of your ranks, then we can talk.
