Investigators say the relationship began in an Internet chat room. They say it took about three weeks to get to the point Welles was willing to commit a crime.

I know this is illegal but aren't there worse things vice cops could be spending their time with? Maybe guys trading kiddie porn or soliciting 10 year olds? Three weeks?
I don't know about the legal definition of entrapment, but if it takes 3 weeks to convince someone to commit a crime, then I wouldn't say they have a propensity to commit it.
2002-11-08 10:49:53 AM
Johnc98 I was thinking entrapment too, but that doesn't make him any less of a dumbass. Three weeks or not, he ultimately made the choice.

Who better to commit crimes of stupidity than an expert.

So undercover cops pose as 15 year olds and go out trying to seduce people into underage sex, then arrest them? Odd... don't people get in touch by phone anymore? When I meet people off the internet, I at least talk to them before hand, so that I might at least know that they're a girl.
2002-11-08 04:04:35 PM
I just read today that Winona Ryder's shoplifting trial is boosting her career in Hollywood. I wonder if Welles' arrest will get his books back into print due to a sudden surge in demand caused by this arrest.

Wow! Finally a scandal in the stupid industry!

Are you male or a lesbian ?

2002-11-08 04:05:06 PM
Finally. Correct usage of tag.
2002-11-08 04:06:16 PM
I just don't meet people on the Internet. Too many different possibilities for getting busted by undercover detectives.
2002-11-08 04:06:20 PM
What do you expect from someone who wrote the book on stupidity.
2002-11-08 04:06:27 PM
Well, who better to write about "stupidity" than someone who knows the most about it? If I wrote a book on how to kill time at work by Farking, I'd be the best candidate.

I think if an undercover cop poses as a 15 year old and arrests the pervert for buying into the advances, then he SHOULD be arrested. He was obviously there to do it anyway(pick up on a teen).
2002-11-08 04:06:48 PM
Smells like a post in response to the anti-woman bashing rhetoric in previous posts.

Ha ha!
2002-11-08 04:07:21 PM
Well, if you want a book about finances, you'd pick one written by a financial expert, not a bankrupt crack addict right? So when buying your books about stupid people...
2002-11-08 04:07:21 PM
Ah he's a pervert and a dumbass. It's a fair cop.
2002-11-08 04:07:21 PM
Very nice use of the ironic tag.
2002-11-08 04:07:55 PM
And that, kids, is your humble narrators 30th post. I am off for a mini-pitcher to celebrate.
2002-11-08 04:08:45 PM

The most fun I've had in a chatroom is accusing all girls, who list their age as being 16 and under, of being a male FBI agent.

"Hi my name is Suzy, I'm 15 and I go to school at Hubert Humphrey High."

lol I was just laughing about this with a couple of friends, and I submitted it to Fark. Then I got back to the main page and here it was...(not my submission, obviously, but definitely Fark worthy.)
Such a dumbass.
2002-11-08 04:09:56 PM
maybe it was research for his next book?

are the court costs tax deductable?
2002-11-08 04:09:59 PM
OK this is American and I am a Canadian, but isn't there something about "entrapment" here? I mean I am all in favour of protecting outr children, God knows I have 2 daughters myself, but really ... this was 3 weeks of trying to get this guy. This sucks.
2002-11-08 04:10:21 PM
Why not a FLORIDA tag, though?

Nope. Not quite.

However, it is closer than a lot of others I have seen here.

You should really try thinking before you post. Just remember to disable your smoke detectors first.

Ididntdoit I wish I could get up to my 30th post....I've been submitting what I thought was good stuff lately...but heh..I'm still at 23.

Enjoy that pitcher!

Think about having that job... sitting around on a pc, getting paid to do cyberseckz0rz, and then arresting people who set up meetings with you.

Ive never done cybersex, and frankly cant understand how ANYBODY could get off by looking at text, specially when you dont know who the hell is on the other side talkin to you, and this story just helps support that.

Dont get me wrong, I was thinking entrapment again too. But, like someone else said, the guy eventually made a decision to go meet a 15 year old for sex, and deserves to be arrested.
2002-11-08 04:14:37 PM
From the article: "Investigators say the relationship began in an Internet chat room. They say it took about three weeks to get to the point Welles was willing to commit a crime."

Willing to commit the crime? That is entrapment.

n. in criminal law, the act of law enforcement officers or government agents inducing or encouraging a person to commit a crime when the potential criminal expresses a desire not to go ahead. The key to entrapment is whether the idea for the commission or encouragement of the criminal act originated with the police or government agents instead of with the "criminal." Entrapment, if proved, is a defense to a criminal prosecution. The accused often claims entrapment in so-called "stings" in which undercover agents buy or sell narcotics, prostitutes' services or arrange to purchase goods believed to be stolen. The factual question is: Would Johnny Begood have purchased the drugs if not pressed by the narc?

It would be ironic if he were an author of books on how to protect your children on-line or some such.

Paedophiles are warped sociopaths, not necessarily stupid.

Stupid is an IQ issue.

Just sayin' izall.

You may now return to your state of ignorant bliss.

Site that Xsgoddess is referring to

I agree, he should submit the articles directly.
2002-11-08 04:19:39 PM
Any lawyers in here? Do I remember correctly that (facts aside) an entrapment defense is generally a long shot and only used in rather desperate situations?
2002-11-08 04:20:40 PM
Tell the author what you think of him at jwelles103[nospam-﹫-backwards]loa*com

I got it from his website
2002-11-08 04:20:54 PM
Ididntdoit, I first read that you were "off for a mini-pincher to celebrate," in which case it was more detail than I wanted to know.
2002-11-08 04:21:05 PM
Would it have been entrapment if it WAS a 15 year old girl that he talked to for 3 weeks?? And believe me, 15 year old girls aren't all that "savvy" on the internet to know that they're talking to anyone else other than a Brad Pitt loook alike.
2002-11-08 04:21:07 PM
So it is illegal to agree to meet for sex with a fictional 15 year old? Even though the person wasn't actually 15 and even though they didn't have sex?
2002-11-08 04:22:04 PM
Way to go, cops.
Make headlines by busting someone you spent 3 weeks enticing. Direct people's attention to an imaginary threat, so they will ignore the thousands of fathers and brothers out there making little girls go down on them.
2002-11-08 04:23:29 PM
Johnc98: Most of these sting cases send the defendant to federal prison, so apparently not. You're not going to win a whole lot of sympathy when your crime is planning to engage in a little statutory rape.
2002-11-08 04:25:22 PM
The issue definitely sounds like entrapment to me. I have to figure, though, that if it's obvious to all of us that it's entrapment, the police wouldn't be airing that to the public. Therefore, I assume that the person who wrote the article worded it poorly or misquoted someone, and must be a dumbass.

/serious commentary

Besides, maybe the guy was simply researching for his next book about sexual stupidity or online stupidity. Oh, that's right, the researching-a-role defense doesn't work.
2002-11-08 04:26:02 PM
Wonder why this didn't make it up when I posted it at 8:30 this morning??
2002-11-08 04:26:36 PM
Yep, a great use for the ol' [image from too old to be available] tag. When will these pediphilic creeps realize that there isn't a single 15 year old on the planet that wants to have sex with a middle-aged farkwit? I recently saw a bust go down on one of these pervs and the guy was architypical: receeding hairline, fat and creepy. One less scuzball roaming freely on the streets is okay by me. Hope he likes being someone's little biatch in the pokey.
2002-11-08 04:26:53 PM
Great use of a tag. Kudos
2002-11-08 04:27:59 PM
In other news, a middle-aged female friend of mine recently started an online flirtation with an FBI agent who turned out to be a 15-year-old girl.
2002-11-08 04:29:07 PM
*Ive never done cybersex, and frankly cant understand how ANYBODY could get off by looking at text,*

it's called fantasy.
2002-11-08 04:29:27 PM
Fifth- I was just wondering from a defence attorney point of view- would shouting entrapment as a defence kill much of a defence because you aren't disputing any WHO/WHAT/WHERE/WHEN 's but only the WHY?
2002-11-08 04:29:33 PM
Haha, beautiful Melquiades72, absolutely beautiful.
2002-11-08 04:30:50 PM
How come this never works for guys wanting to meet girls on the internet?
2002-11-08 04:31:18 PM
"We can't be lovey-dovey in public," the stupidity expert explained to his new young friend. "Bottom line, I'm committing a crime."

She could call him "Dad" when they met at a Denny's in Lantana, said Welles, who also has a Ph.D in biology. Then they could go to his car and have sex, he suggested -- but backed away from that plan when he realized his windows were not tinted enough to ensure privacy.

HARDLY entrapment. The sicko KNEW what he was doing and was PRE-planning sex with a 15 year old. Case closed. All the arguments on the "entrapment" issue is futile in this case.
2002-11-08 04:31:28 PM

I think most men would have an easiser time convicing themsleves it would be ok to pork a 15 year old. It's much closer to legal.

and IMHO, at 15 you should know what you are getting into with guys on the internet.

2002-11-08 04:32:35 PM
Where are these horny girls you speak of?
2002-11-08 04:35:08 PM
This could also get a Flori-duh tag as well. Read the location where this ocurred?
2002-11-08 04:39:06 PM
Just think, if the cops spent 3 weeks trying to solve a crime, instead of trying to talk someone into committing one.
