Work to remove any amphibians found would then take several more months.

They will remove them when they can. They should get something out of it though.

Cool-looking newt.

I sort of have gone off amphibians since a gecko crawled into our kettle and was repetitively boiled for a couple of weeks. Didn't do much for the tea either.

I remember a story in California where a housing developer dug a pit during the construction of a new neighborhood, planning to fill the pit back in when construction of the houses was finished.

Months later, the pit has become a pond, and a protected amphibian species has moved in. The pond is now a permanent part of the neighborhood.

Three points regarding my story and the article:

1. If these species are so fragile, how in the world do they turn up in such unusual places, to the extent that they become a nuisance?

2. Why can't the government just pay an animal control service or environmental group to move the animal to a more suitable environment?

3. If this happened in a low-income housing project, instead of in a rich person's mansion like in the article, the far-lefties would destroy each other fighting over which special interest deserved to be saved more.

And this is why you never involve local government if you can avoid it. Instead of asking permission to clear the drain they should have just paid a vagrant to get in there with a garden trowel and clear it out. Its not like inspectors go around looking suspiciously at working drainage systems to see who might have been puttering with their official blockage.

Easier to get forgiveness than permission, especially if the evidence has washed downstream a few thousand feet.

Its a drainage ditch, not a natural habitat.

Property rights are the foundation of civilization, and ours - both in the UK and US - are being undermined.

Take a few of them and make sure their new home is a few monuments, elected officials' homes etc. I bet they wont be "protected" for very long.

Sounds like what the white man did to all the black people who got washed out of Nawlins.

Not saying it's true or false, but I've read stories about how there were explosives planted on the levee walls which were detonated when Katrina passed over, and there was tell-tale residuals remaining after the storm passed.

agreed. We had this happen in Illinois during building a new subdivision. Can't remember the exact species of bird they were all found dead. Turns out they died from poison. Builders blamed emissions from vehicles.

You know that the last verified thing like that I can remember is during one of the giant midwest floods. They caught a boat on camera trying to ram a levy down so their own location would be spared.

Y'know, with all the articles about these damn newts screwing everything up...I think it's about time they get off the endangered species' list. Seriously, the little bastards seem to show up EVERYWHERE.

Or are they different newts each time?

I'm currently writing a conservation plan for a plant found in only 6 locations in a single county and nowhere else on earth, so I'm getting a kick out of your reply.

Shoot yourself in the foot if you want, but if people actually allowed access to their land, a lot more populations would be found and taking your home-sweet-home by eminent domain to build a park wouldn't be necessary.

Then again, there was residue from everything on everything. I'd bet the entire Nawlins flood pond tested positive as a meth lab, a black man's toilet, multiple chem plants, etc...

Water is an awesome solvent.
