Oh, right. This is the thread where everybody comes in and pretends to be concerned about the world's hungry but really just wants to bash the UN.

We can't help it - the UN is very bashable.

I wasn't aware that the UN had a monopoly on being able to help alleviate world hunger.

Oh, I was just being an ass. I don't think they're as bad as they used to be.

Still, one wonders how the UN has any credibility left with regard to food aid.

Why not? They have over a trillion dollars in cash. There's only so many Treasury bonds they can buy - especially considering the US is a bad investment now.

The World Food Program, which feeds about 73 million people worldwide.

We're gonna take you back, to the year 1939 when Charlie Chaplin and his Nazi regime enslaved Europe and tried to take over the world. ...But then an even greater force emerged, the Un. ...And the Un un-nazied the world, forever.

Sucks for the UN and the countries in need, but they'll just have to wait till my family is taken care of before I worry about them and theirs. Not my fault, not my problem. Maybe they could take this small break in getting free food and money to learn how to fend for themselves finally.

Was the restaurant name misspelled? I'm not that familiar with NYC fine dining. I'm also pretty sure that the UN doesn't fund the dining habits of ambassadors, anyhow.

Considering the tiny percentage of world population that 73 million represents, those must be some people of unbelievably dire need. The bottom 1% worldwide... think about what their definition of "bad day" must entail. I think "flies in eyes" is a baseline requirement.

2008-03-25 03:51:14 PM
Okay. No UN bashing.

How about mandatory birth control for starving millions so in 20 years we don't have requests for food for starving billions?

This is deliciously ironic. The more food we give the hungry in Africa now, the more food they will require to sustain the increase in population.

Dear United Nations,

How are you doing? We're not doing so great right now. :(

Our economy is kind of going into the shiater because we, you know, sort of protect the world with our military, and we're sort of, you know, busy with war and stuff (that's expensive!! But we hear building lots of houses hurt our economy, not these wars, but what do I know...?)

Not sure if you noticed any of this, but, well, maybe you're too busy not funding large national armies, enjoying all that domestic bliss (health care, lattes, etc.) while we continue to protect your asses?

Anyhow, bottom line is that, well, we're sort of broke right now, so about that $500 million... Eat a dick! ;)

All our love,

The United States of America

p.s. We're still your friends and we don't mind protecting your asses and such, but damn dude, don't be asking us for money when we just lost our job, have insane gas prices going on, and I still don't have health care for almost 1/5 of my citizens... you dick!

What have you done today?

Got up and had some toast and coffee for breakfast but by 10:00am I was STARVING. So I had some pretzels. Finally around 12:30pm I was so hungry I ate lunch early (broccoli, chicken and rice casserole) I then had a couple of snack well cookies for dessert. I will be REALLY hungry about 6:30 but I try to hold out for dinner till 7:00pm.

choice and consequence: Sheeeeit. Must suck hard in one of the crap economies. Not that great in ours (US), for that matter.

I know quite a few people in the bar/restaurant business. Prices are going up sharply on every front. Beer, food, fuel. Expect prices to go up, the managers and owners can't eat the difference for much longer.

We are broke. Let some of the other nations pick up the slack. Let the other nations show that they care about something beyond their own borders. They can even send troops to Darfur if they want.

Because America really is the ATM of the UN. When are these 3rd world countries ever going to be self sufficient, or is it our inherit responsibility to go on for the rest of recorded history supplying these farking countries with the necessities of life because everyone on earth wants, needs, and deserves the exact same level of food, comfort and shelter.

You'd hope so, but I think the real problem in those areas of profound need is actually water more than anything, or specifically clean, potable water that isn't laden with feces, poison, or other nasty bric-a-brac. Water will likely be THE resource over which the world will fight in the future. Look at the political skirmishes in the SE and SW states alone, and we're not some overcrowded backwater!

The food distribution programs are all well and good, but a huge obstacle to them is the hungry-but-not-collapsed bands of ruffians that hijack the shipments to feed their own family (at best) or the black market (at worst). Ruthless people in a ruthless world.

Gee, maybe if the US didn't strong arm almost every other nation on earth into outlawing cannabis, people wouldn't be starving to death because they could grow hemp (it does, after all, grow just about anywhere, in any climate, in any soil) and make food from it.

Las Vegas and Phoenix are doomed in the long run. Do you really think that they can keep growing at the rate they are now?

My prediction is big water problems in the western US in about 20 years. In 50 years? Who knows what kind of a mess there will be?
