SnarfVader: Well, yeah. Ever seen a totally bald hippie?

Have you ever seen a bald man without significant and noticeable amounts of back/leg/arm hair? Have you ever seen a man with a full head of hair who had noticeable amounts of body hair?

Yes to the second. See him in the mirror everyday.

I'm just posing the question. In general, matured men with a full head of hair have somewhat less body hair. A lot less in some cases. And vice-versa--bald men tend to have a lot of body hair. Pubic hairs have nothing to do with it. Actually, pubic hair has everything to do with it, but not right now.

I can't knock this guy - anyone who's been around since Before Christ gets the benefit of the doubt with me.

That's an interesting response. Can you grow a beard within about 3 weeks? What color is your hair?

I'm not trying to generalize people. I'm just mentioning a rather common pattern about genetics.

Do women who have mustaches also lose their hair at a certain age?

Do you think it's true or false? If you think it's true, how do you know? If you think it's false, how do you know?

I'm joking with you a little bit, because as usual the question is far more complicated. But in general high levels of testosterone create bald men (and balding women in a different way). It's all up to estrogen and testosterone. Women with low levels of estrogen tend to get some facial hair. Men who have high levels of testosterone tend to go bald.

if anyone knows how to actually find info on this patent....do post.

even the implication that he can 'prevent hair loss' for those who are genetically predisposed to lose it could be huge news....

you could totally have 'head and sholders with baldystop' on shelves....marketed to EVERYONE...you know..just IN CASE you might lose your hair.

then they'll start putting it into our water a la fluoridation..because you know, its good for you.

so..everyone's gonna get a healthy dose of it daily..anytime they take a shower.

then, 40 years later..they'll realize it's slowly killing everyone.

then...'i am legend'

Yes to the beard. Hair is brown, but going grey. My grandfather never went bald either.

Never meant to be serious with my original post. I just find that what usually happened to the hippies I knew is that they ended up shaving their hair and joining society eventually. It always occured before they had a chance to go bald.

Irrelevant. You have pulled a statistic out of your ass.

in general, if it were all up to estrogen and testosterone levels, hormone therapy would be curative

There was a herbalist in B.C.? Was it the guy that always rode around on the wheel?

Sun God: high levels of testosterone create bald men

No, it doesn't. 5 alpha-reductase changes testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, which causes some hair follicles to self-destruct. So a 5-AR inhibitor like finasteride will help. It's called Propecia.

I came in here to post what Quantum Apostrophe just said, only in far less specific terms. More like in, 'Hair loss causes for layman dummies' kind of terms.

Good thing QA got here first.

Agreed. There's nothing worse than a greasy middle-aged man with a bald spot and a pony tail, or like I saw last weekend, a greasy bald guy with long, disheveled hair...

What's REALLY amazing is a herbalist actually trying to do scientific trials!

Dubya's_Coke_Dealer: What's REALLY amazing is a herbalist actually trying to do scientific trials!

One hand denounces modern medicine as dangerous and ineffective profit-whoring, while the other touts their new herbal remedies as "clinically tested and scientifically proven" to work.

The best part is the people who rub the "all natural" label in your face. "Oh, it's all natural! None of those harmsul artificial things!" - Yeah, there are plenty of nasty poisons and toxins in nature, so "all natural" does not equate to "safe."

Calling it "herbal" is just an easy way to bypass the FDA, nothing more.

Regain is made from rat droppings. Makes it "natural", I guess.

I don't think so. He really admired the drug culture of the 60's and 70's and though I don't really consider him a true hippy you can't deny he associated with a great deal of hippies in his time.

Have you seen "Fear and Loathing"?
