The full story:

Released Great White Shark Makes Incredible Progress

Washington (dbTechno) - The great white shark that was released from the Monterey Bay Aquarium in February definitely knew what it meant to swim and don't look back. The great white shark has made incredible progress since leaving the aquarium, and has many stunned.

The shark took just six weeks to make it all of the way to Baja.

The shark was a young male and spent 162 days at the aquarium after it was caught by a commercial fisherman in August.

The shark was caught accidentally.

He was released on February 5th and was equipped with two electronic tracking tags attached to him to allow researchers to follow his progress.

He has now made it to warmer waters into Mexican waters.

He measured in at only 5 feet 10 and weighed 150 pounds when he was set free, but that has not stopped him.

He has managed to maintain an immense speed throughout the entire journey.

I'm sure the animal lovers will tear me to shreds, but given that when a great white shark looks a human it goes 'Hmmm, I wonder if could eat that...' why exactly did we release it?

Shoot it, harpoon it, etc.

I got to see that young female great white a few years ago, and it was awe inspiring. They had it in the big tuna tank, with the huge blue fins and other sharks. Whenever any shark would swim by, people who squeal "is that it? is that it?" But when she would actually swim by, there would only be silence. There was no doubt that was her. Amazing, majestic creature.

Uh, no.

Great Whites usually aren't looking at humans. They're looking for seals, sea lions, other pinnipeds, and occasionally small whales.

When they *do* see humans, their reaction is usually "WTF is that...?". Occasionally you have a shark that's curious enough that it investigates in the only way sharks know how: it mouths the thing. The teeth cause the problem.

Very, very rarely, a shark sees something on the surface that looks like food, goes rocket up towards it, and gets a surprising mouthful of dumb surfer / swimmer. Of course, at that point, it has a mouthful of blood and the whole brainstem feeding thing kicks in, although sometimes they go "WTF! Where's the cream filling?!" and spit it out and leave.

Sharks don't hunt humans. They just munch on them once in a while by mistake.

Yeah they wanted to keep her and were hoping against hope that she wouldn't 'revert' to her normal instincts. After she ate several other fish they decided to let her go.

Actually, they don't want to eat you at all. The fact is they have very poor eyesight, and the only time a person gets bitten by a GWS is because they were mistaken for a seal, or another similar chubby aquatic animal. But bitten is not the same as eaten. GW sharks are actually warm-blooded and have very sensitive mouths, so sensitive that when they bite down on you they can gauge your bodyfat content, immediately recognize that your fat content is far lower than that of a seal, and them let go because your relatively lower caloric value is not worth the effort of eating you. And then they move on to find a more suitable meal.

This is all true.

A jaguar shark, on the other hand... they'll farking straight you and not think twice.

To add to this, they mostly eat blubber. While some humans have lots of fat, the ones who are usually out surfing aren't nearly lardy enough to be tasty.

Or so said the guy at the aquarium when everyone asked him why the shark didn't eat the fish in the tank. (It did eventually attack and kill a tuna and another shark because of territory, and that is when they knew she was too big and had to go back to the ocean.)
