Well Fark to the rescue once again. Apparently the article was updated.

FTFA: (AP) TOWNSEND, Tenn. - Rangers in Tennessee have found four cavers who failed to return on time from on an overnight spelunking trip in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

I couldn't get off the damn elevator very well, it was either my joypad didn't like B-right combination or the game sucked.
It might be the latter, because the game never got an official nintendo license.

I go urban spelunking. It sounds more official than tresspassing and tends to appease the police. If I really need to be official, then I'm an architectural historian doing field work and my permits are misplaced because I'm an eccentric professor who's too busy doing important stuff and would you leave me alone while I finish running down that corridor.

/PS. Leave only footprints, take only photos.

Wiki:

In the 1960s, the term "spelunking" began to convey the idea of inexperienced cavers, using unreliable light sources and cotton clothing. In 1985, Steve Knutson (editor of American Caving Accidents) made the following distinction:

"...Note that I use the term 'spelunker' to denote someone untrained and unknowledgeable in current exploration techniques, and 'caver' for those who are."

This sentiment is exemplified by bumper stickers and t-shirts displayed by many cavers: "Cavers rescue spelunkers".

BlorfMaster: Ya know, Tennessee and Kentucky has some awesome caves. When I was a kid I remember exploring some caves that were in the woods near my house. I used to tell my mom where I been and she thought it was neat. I could not imagine doing that if i had kids.

Also, when I was a kid my YMCA daycare spent the night in mammoth caverns. before we went to bed they told us a spooky as hell ghost story.

There were bathrooms in the cave...right next to an ancient graveyard that was in the cave..

I spent the entire night curled up in a ball having to pee the worse i ever have in my life. I was afraid to even open my eyes and see the spook, never mind going past an old grave yard in the pitch-black to pee...

That's racist.

To be fair, I'm not representative of either. I'm quoting a friend of mine. You'd never catch me doing either one. I am not comfortable in close spots. The whole thing gives me teh heebie jeebies.

...and?

Sounds to me like a "I'm not a trekkie, I'm a trekker!" argument. Only you chose the stupider-sounding word instead of the one intended to make you sound more knowledgeable.

Seems to me the brighter thing would have been to apply "caver" to the inexperienced joes and reserving the "I know all the technical terms"-sounding word for the people claiming to, well, know more about the activity.

THANK YOU! The movie was a totally cheesy knock-off of Jeff Long's book. I know because I read it. Then, I had the misfortune of watching the movie, which is very little related to the novel. I happen to know because Jeff is a friend of mine. He should have sued the carp out of them. Too nice of a guy and too corrupt the system.

Did anyone else here read Ted the Caver and think "wow, what a piece of crap written by a 16 year old in an over-enthusiastic attempt at an 11th grade creative writing paper"?

Because I thought it blew.

See, thing is, I used to (upstate NY, near my uncle Monchito*'s place). Never minded. Now that I am older, I don't even like going into the crawlspace under my house.

Never needed rescuing. Almost did one time, 'cos the 'caver' got his fat ass stuck (hence why I have the opposite opinion of the words). Which is the other reason I don't go spelunking now - I am a fatass now, and have no desire to be "that guy".

*I have no idea if that's really his name, but that's what we always called him

/we call another uncle "Pipo" (not his name, either) if that gives you any idea about my family

First of all, I didn't choose shiat. I'm not a caver OR a spelunker. But I do prefer to use the words that the people who do the activity use themselves.

Second of all, your use of "sounds to me", "stupider-sounding", and "seems to me" lead me to believe that you don't know what the hell you are talking about.

Has anyone yelled into the cave telling the lost people to go toward the light?
