bdub77: Fertilizers use oil poop.

bdub77: Izunbacol: Assuming gas hit $5/gallon, that would be $1950 vs $3000, or $1050/year. $20/week. That's still way less than I paid to smoke a pack a day. Since I quit a few months back, I could basically look at myself as being immune to $5 gas, while being healthier and enjoying the taste of food.

See this is the sort of economic logic that bugs me.

The effect that oil prices have is not only on your daily commute. You eat, right? Where do you think food comes from? Fertilizers use oil. Farm equipment uses oil. The trucks that ship your food to the grocery store use oil. It doesn't stop there. The price of things is in many ways tied to oil. Taking a vacation via airplane. Things you buy online that require shipping.

Indirectly, alternative fuels like corn-based ethanol have made the situation worse by making corn the new big crop and upping the prices of other commodities like wheat and rice.

This all adds up to a bunch of more expensive problems in the long run. Trust me, the cost to you of $1 more per gallon of gas isn't limited to your car.

True. And the need for fuel for some of the really important purposes you listed may well push us back to WWII style rationing again, too.

Love my Shell card that gives 5% back on all gas purchases and then I get to write off about 40% a year because our Jeep is the business vehicle.

Sure, everything else is more expensive thanks to the high prices, but you gotta find your sunshine somewhere....

My pay is indexed to cost of living and inflation. If nothing else, this'll make my car payment go down, relatively speaking.

/around 5.5% for 2008.
//I save several times the difference in the Fit and Element by not changing my official residency to California.
///9.1% if you make more than peanuts? WTF!

Jubeebee: or get our heads out of our asses about nuclear power, things'll be changing here in the next decade or so.

That's numero uno in things the US needs to do to prepare for the future.

GaryPDX: These are showing up in Portland more...

My friend's dad has one of those it's actually quite roomy on the inside. Fits a 6' 260lb guy easily in it and room for someone else, its too bad they don't keep the diesel engine in it though.

Oil futures dropped $4+ yesterday and already they're down another $2.75

If anything they're going to come down a little.

/But don't let silly things like Logic hold you to that idea.

Just one more reason to leave Iraq. We spend $1B in fuel a week there.

What we need is some middle eastern saber rattling that dosn't envolve us. Because middle eastern countries have only one way to raise a lot of cash for military supplies and thats to flood the market in oil.

zealot_45: I drive a urban assault vehicle ('99 GMC Suburban) with a 44 gallon tank...cost me over $180 to fill up the other day

You drive around in your house?

/I keed
//Seriously, why not sell it to a family with 4 kids and several dogs, then buy a smaller tank car?
