I so don't trust the engineers of PennDOT.

Not too far from this crack, over by Bridge Street, is a large and impressive array of overpasses and cloverleaf-ish exits. Amidst this construction are three HUGE support columns like the one with the crack in it... except they don't support anything. Just three fat columns, jutting straight into the air.

I asked a friend who worked in roaconstruction about it - apparently they were put up by mistake, but it would cost more to take them down then to leave them there as an admission of a big fark-up.

Here is a picture of the crazy overpass thing I was talking about right near the problem spot.

Link (new window)

Those three dots near the center of the image are the columns supporting nothingness. And as an added bonus - in the lower left hand portion of the image, where the roadway creates a "v" as it merges off into a curve... well, the sections of roadway really don't match up well - there is a definite flaw in the melding of the two sections. Lovely...

I ride my bike past that pillar, so I'm getting a big kick....

There's a guard dog in a chain link enclosed yard across the street from the pillar, so he'll be freaking out allll day long for the next coupla days.

There a multiple places along that stretch where the I beams are rusting heavily, concrete cracking, etc. I try not to think about it when rocketing along that section of I-95 in my Jetta.

Sigh. If only we had nuked the middle east, shaved all the muzzies and painted them pink, taken the oil, built nuclear/solar/wind power systems, electrified the roads for electric cars, stopped Yoko Ono from trashing the Beatles, saved Kurt Cobain, grew hemp, aborted that unholy experiment with New Coke, etc., we'ed have the money to keep I-95 maintained....

Dang, that is one hell of a crack.

And Surly_Duff's picture looks like they planned to make a bridge across the 3 columns but changed their minds. You can see the beginning of a major bridge heading toward them but it just stops. Excellent work. I guess that's what you get with union labor. Makes me feel better about Houston roads. At least nothing looks that bad.

Isn't that why they've had the whole highway backed up for miles every weekend from August through December?

The only thing worse than PennDOT is Philadelphia Gas Works. They angered me a bit when they thought it was a good idea to jackhammer right outside my apartment window from midnight until 5 in the morning. They did this because my very drunk neighbor was convinced there was a gas leak, when in fact she was merely smelling her own fumes coming out of her pie hole. I wanted to murder the PGW crew and my neighbor.

I had a PGW experience very similar last summer in Manayunk.

From about 9pm, through the night, for about 20 hours, just outside my bedroom window

No kidding? I believe it. The kicker is they came back 2 weeks later and were drilling all damn day all the while running an air compressor with a constant hiss that lasted through the night. So I have had 2 sleepless night because of PGW

actually those 3 pillars were to be part of a bridge over 95, for the roadway that was supposed to cut across north philly from the betsy ross bridge to 76 right where City Line ave meets up. You can see the beginnings of the bridge to the bottom right in your map link. The plan is still being kicked around from my understanding, and they may actually build it one of these decades. You know, after philly gets a little less bankrupt?

/The more you know...

TF is suspiciously devoid of any Philly farkers, or at least any cool ones. I will hopefully be back in Jersey before the year is over.

hah. I'm on the R2 from Wilminton too. I have not seen the Asian death stare, but the chubby yapping anime chick should shut up about her personal life, because the rest of us do not want to know. That and the ham-beasts taking up all the seats. And all the brothers camped out like they live there. (Who knows, may they do).
