sinkholes are what happens when you've got a cave, and the roof dissolves and collapses, leaving an abcess.

they happen wherever you good carbonate or evaporite deposits (limestone/dolomise, or gypsum/salt), because they dissolve fairly rapidly win contrast with other rocks.

there was a sinkhole under the st. louis gateway arch. i don't remember how they remedied it...

That black and white picture is the winter park sinkhole in florida. It ate a few Porsches, a house and a swimming pool. I think they're still down there, somewhere. Now it just looks like an average pond.

Looks like houston needs http://www.sinkholelawyer.com

best. sinkholeheadline. evar.

We need more links such as this.
I know what your thinking....it is somewhat arcane and even sybilline ( in a divinatory/prophetic sense of course ).

Misspudding: My ex is 2/3 sinkhole. She has a cave, and an abcess, but no roof. Dissolves easily with alcohol.

"I got a yard full of water, but it won't flush my toilet."

The man's an idiot. I take it it hasn't occurred to him to use a hi-tech solution such as one of those new-fangled "bucket" devices to transport the water from the garden to the toilet.

Damn you mole-people!

2002-11-06 07:29:31 AM
Can't they just fill it with Texans pave over it?

Someone find a picture of that sinkhole in Columbus, Ohio that ate a gold Mercedes or Jaguar being driven by a lawyer. I still think that was the best sinkhole story ever.

2002-11-06 09:05:09 AM
Misspudding, I agree, that first picture was way cool. Though the conspiracy theory is it was created by a radio-active gigantic worm. Either that, or mother earth is getting horney...

Just happy I wasn't up in Alaska this week, my car doesn't handle 6 foot cracks in the road very well.

p.s.

U a hottie.

If you remove all but the first and last words of that article, you get no toilet.

There's an 84-inch sanitary sewer and a 24-inch water main under it. It's the sewer. A defect has been allowing soil to slowly wash into the sewer, creating the cavity. The soil in the pipe is carried away to the treatment plant where it is not noticed in the sludge. The defect could be a small crack, offset pipe joint or a partial collapse of the crown (top) of the pipe. We once sent a robot TV camera through a 48-inch sewer as part of a routine inspection. 50-feet from the manhole, the top of the pipe was missing and there was a large cavity above it. The camera clearly showed concrete at the top of the cavity. That concrete was the bottom layer of the road bed. We were able to shut down the street and make the repair without any damage to private property.
Here's a typical robot camera setup.

Here's a few pipe pictures taken by a robot.

I hope I didn't kill the thread. I guess I should have finished with something witty or humorous, such as "I would hit it, and take pictures."

Oh nevermind.

2002-11-06 11:28:34 AM
You killed the thread. Congrats.

Guess they have to fix the pothole, then. The neighborhood is probably happy.

2002-11-06 11:33:22 AM
That's no pothole. It's just a place where Anna Nicole sat down to eat an entire goat.

There is no escape from the Fortress of the Moles.

Except that one.

Greenhalomagica and MasterSheik I think that sinkhole is sinking down, down, down into the earth, down, down...
(Shut up, Mike)

Isn't Houston just a big sinkhole anyway?

Isn't Meta just text on my monitor?

Meta:
"Isn't Houston just a big sinkhole anyway?"

Actually, no - it's a big shiathole - big difference.
