Very impressive. Best record in the West.

Cowboy Spencer: Very impressive. Best record in the West.

Tied with the Lakers. And only a half game ahead of 2nd place in their division. I don't think the Rockets are going all the way.

Good for them!

Uncle Pooky: I don't think the Rockets are going all the way.

Yeah, I just hope they get out of first round, myself.

I was a huge fan when I lived in Houston back in the mid-90s, then I moved away and just kind of followed them. But it's nice to see them do well - I went to a game last season and was astonished by how much better than everyone else McGrady was when he turned it on. It looked like everyone else was standing still.

They have the Lakers and Celtics for their next two games so lets see how that works out for them. Impressive streak for sure, but they've managed to avoid all but a couple of the top teams in the league.

You wonder what Yao must be thinking. It doesn't really seem like they miss him much.

2008-03-15 11:16:22 AM
Yeah, most of the fans in Houston are aware that this is not any real indicator of what will happen in the playoffs, but still...

One thing that's is getting somewhat over looked is that they had won four of five before starting the streak. They're 25 of 26 since Jan 19th, and 30 of 33 since Jan 4th.

Once you include January, it looks better wrt quality. They're 4-2 against Western Conf. powerhouses (SA, Utah, NO and Dallas), 6-2 if you include Denver and Golden State.

Well, they didn't write the schedule. They've only lost 4 games in 2008. Ask any NBA player and they'll tell you it would be hard to win that many games in a row playing the worst team every time.

That is the strange thing. The team seems to flourish when either Yao or T-Mac go down.

The win streak is impressive but you have to wonder how much longer the motivation can keep them inspired, they seem to be fired up over columnists saying that without Yao they would disintegrate, that motivation is giving them the "we're going to crush you" edge, many of the victories are in double digits, unusual for a team to keep that killer instinct focused consistently for such a duration. good luck to them, great to see a total team effort...

Yesterday was a bad day for ankles in basketball: Pao Gasol got a bad sprain and had to leave the game. Ray Allen jammed an ankle and left the game. Chris Paul got a mild sprain, but stayed in. Even in college Richard Mbah a Moute for UCLA got a bad sprain.

The next week looks pretty tough for the Rockets. Five games in seven days against playoff bound teams:

Mar 16LAL 3:30 PM
Mar 18Bos9:30 PM
Mar 19@NO8:00 PM
Mar 21@GS10:30 PM
Mar 22@Pho10:00 PM

If the Warriors and Suns get ankle injuries I'm going to start being suspicious.

I just read a sports article that said this:

For the story to end happily, Houston must play well enough the rest of the way to make the playoffs and win at least one round, neither of which is likely to happen.

I can understand doubting the ROckets will win a playoff round... but is it unlikely that they would make the playoffs?

They are tied for the best record right now and 6 games ahead of the 9th place team. I think they will at least get the 8th seed.

How many more wins until they get a first round bye week?

/we all know they need it.

Isn't this the way it ALWAYS works though?

No one ever has a huge streak by playing 10 great teams in a row. THe 72 dolphins played an easy as schedule. The Patriots only played a handful of top teams and had a lot of injury luck (like the Rockets had against the Mavs). Etc. etc.

I don't think that makes their streak any less impressive. No team is going to have a 20 game win streak playing @LAL, Bos, @DET, @NOR, @PHO, LAL....

Damn...why can't the Texans or goddamndogassastros take note?

12 of the 21 were with Yao. He played a big part in this streak. What were they supposed to do do, roll over and play dead once he went out? Damn shame we won't see him back this year.

"I'm willing to concede that we're the worst team in NBA history to have a 20-game winning streak." -- Shane Battier. How he got that out of his mouth with his tongue planted so firmly in his cheek is a marvel to me.

Considering the Celts just stunk up the joint last night, and lost Ray Allen, this game could be a streak extender for the Rockets. Hell, good for the Rockets, but is Yao out for the year? Because if not I wonder if his return might throw off the team chemistry they have now.

I'm just hoping that if the streak ends, they won't suddenly lose the intensity.

That's a great point about the double digit leads. People want to take away from the streak because of the schedule and yet they fail to mention that the Rockets are down their starting center (and Landry as of late), they're playing a lot of young guys and they are beating these teams with double digits. It's a complete team effort with different guys stepping up each night. That is a rarity these days.

Like the Rockets or not the streak is very impressive.

Yes, Yao is out for the season for surgery.

You know what? Huge Cs fan and all... I'm convinced by the arguments. What the Rockets have done is very very impressive. Kudos to the Rockets. Your streak is gonna end to the Cs or the Ls this week, though. And the Celts gonna be in the finals anyway. Sooo sorrrry. Love, Boston

Doubtful.

In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if they don't make it to the conference finals (after having been upset by the Cavs).

It is going to be a Pistons-Lakers final.

Well, it's an accurate statement. This is one hell of a streak, but the other two teams with 20+ game winning streaks won the championship, and were, in fact, much better than the Rockets.

The Cowboys haven't won a playoff game since their world title, first round bye, home field advantage, first round exit. They're playing lights out everywhere, but were much stronger on the road before the streak. I'd like to see the streak go 30, lose a few to come back to earth, then finish with a 4-6 game streak.

We pretty much established yesterday that all streaks consist of beating who you should and playing tough opponents well. Check, and check. Having watched every game except a few in the first couple months, I know how deep the Rockets' bench is. They're built very similar to the Pistons and S.A. dynasty--very solid through and through with a team mentality. There have been a lot of "close" games in the first 3 quarters during this streak that start to get out of hand when McGrady, Battier & co. are riding pine and there are 3-5 bench players in (Novak 45% beyond the arc, 50% FG; Luther Head has been playing out of his mind; 2/3 of Scola, Landry, or Hayes is off the bench by virtue; etc etc)

The Lakers are without Pau for todays game @ Houston. Say hello to our new Western Conference leaders. I really hope I don't have to eat crow for telling Rockets fans they were insane for thinking they even had a chance.
