Supports the University of San Francisco "Dons"

Yeah! Both my undergrad and law school made the list as did my sister's alma mater. In our family we choose our schools by wacky team names.

2008-03-14 05:33:39 PM
This list lacks the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs and the Evergreen State Geoducks.

fatimcgee: Supports the University of San Francisco "Dons"

My high school's teams were called the Dons.

Lorelle: This list lacks the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs and the Evergreen State Geoducks.

This appears to be a Division I-only list.

Thus, no Banana Slugs, no Geoducks, no Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes.

Someone either post the list or tell me if the St. Mary's College Gaels made it. It should be on there, mostly because you can't make fun of our team names in any way conceivable ever. EVER.

JerseyTim: Saint Peter's Peacocks

Upper Iowa University has the peacocks, the ladies teams are the Peahens. They were considering renaming the womens teams to the Peacockettes for awhile, I guess.

No UNLV Runnin' Rebels? Hardly seems right that the University of Mississippi "Rebels" makes the list but the Runnin' Rebels, which is a cooler and more imaginative name, doesn't.

Saint Peter's is Peacocks and Peahens, too. When I was there, there was some rumbling about calling the womens teams the Lady Peacocks.

92 - George Washington University "Colonials"

Another dual school nickname. It's OK if the name is unique enough. Of necessity, GWU has a mascot who dresses and looks like the father of our country himself, which is very cool.

No. 87 St. Bonaventure Bonnies.

We were officially re-Christened The Bonnies in the early 1990s when they got rid of all the Indian names. We were the Brown Indians when Bob Lanier played there, and even until the late 1980s the logo was still a capital B with a headdress hanging off of it.

Not sure what kind of idiot made this list and put Canisius or whatever the hell it is number 3. Never met a bigger buncha candy-ass losers in my life.

100 - University of Alabama "Crimson Tide"
The other thing I like about it is it's a singular nickname, not ending in the letter "S". Only a handful of schools have singular nicknames.

He LIKES singular nicknames? They look stupid. Personally, I want them banned, by act of Congress if necessary.

FTA: What's a Commodore? I'm just kidding. If you put up the money to start the school, why shouldn't they name it after you and your maritime military title? It's definitely unique, and it's a very fine academic institution in an unlikely location (Nashville, Tennessee).

Erskine College Flying Fleet

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

The writer makes the assumption that badgers are "wall-to-wall" in Wisconsin because its called the Badger State. There actually aren't many badgers at all in Wisconsin, the state is named as such because miners back in the day would sleep in self-dug ditches, reminiscent of a badger's burrowing activity.

(the more you know...)

Ahhh, my beloved #54. Still, my freshman year was the last year of the friar in the plastic 50s-ish head. I was there for the "Friar Boy" years (the guy in the Dalmatian suit, because the AD & the president hated the plastic head guy, and the dalmatian is the mascot of the Dominican Order). At least they have a real Friar mascot now, even if he does look dopey as hell.

PS: FTA: Or the "Mocs" for short. What most people probably don't realize is this nickname is derived from the bend in the Tennessee River adjacent to Chattanooga, known as the "Moccasin Bend." It could also refer to the water moccasin, or cottonmouth, a very poisonous snake indigenous to the southern US. I love nicknames that can have dual meaning.

Number one, it's officially just Mocs now. And, in case you can't tell, and not that it's easy, the mascot is actually a MOCkingbird, which is also the state bird of Tennessee....

U. of Richmond Spiders deserve to be much higher than 55. Tulsa Golden Hurricane is pretty sweet, too.

Wichita St. Shockers: Never heard the nickname "Wheatshockers," just always thought some guy who liked the pink and the stink simultaneously was able to slip one by those who didn't know better.

By my count, at least 14 of the names on the list violate the rule he made up to specifically avoid listing such names.

UAB represent, y'all!

When I was at UAB, there was a running joke about "what's a Blazer?" We figured we were men's sport coats or something. We had the "rooster," Colonel Beauregard. I don't think, however, that he was the actual "Blazer;" he was just something that look goofy and cool at the basketball games (we didn't have a real football team then - just "club" football). He was replaced by "Blaze," a big Nordic warrior / Thor-looking guy with a hammer. Someone decided he was "too white, too male and too scary," and had to be replaced. Aunt Jemima was suggested. No one could consider her "too white" or "too male," and she's definitely not scary, and when we lost a game . . . pancakes FTW!

The dragon came after I graduated. I've got him on my license plate. He's cool and all, but we still don't know what a Blazer is.

And that list is sorely lacking the University of Springfield Nittany Tide.

Slightly off-topic, but I can't stand minor league teams that are named either the "River-Somethings" or the "Something-Cats."
