I find this very difficult to believe. The President repeatedly told us that our law enforcement and intelligence communities were Godly people who would only use these tools to catch the terrorists that want to kill our children, puppies, etc. I see no reason why the President would want to mislead us.

At least one of the letters was signed by an assistant director and none were cleared with the FBI's general counsel.

Non story. Overzealous staffer.

Maybe he didn't get to do the looking-into-their-eyes thing like he did with Putin. I seem to recall that working out fairly well.

Typical libtard panicking. You libs are lucky that we have a great leader named George W. Bush to protect you from Islamofacist scum. All of this talk about "rights" and "the constitution" is just opening up our homeland to attack from contries like Iran and Chavez which are probably working together.

If I had a time machine, I'd go back and meet the founders and tell them that in the year 2007 the Republican candidates for President were running on a platform of who would torture more.

They'd probably pack up their shiat and go home.

I totally agree, what is worse is that Venezuela, has without generating public attention, has managed to locate themselves on the same side of the globe as America. This alliance or a Axis of Oil is preparing for a attack on American soil.

It's true that they have devious, evil plans for America. They may be just after our freedom which they want to get because they hate so much, but I think it's safe to say that there after our white women too!

The government will always end up abusing any power you give it. That's why transparency is the number one requirement for good government. If they aren't doing anything wrong, then why can't the citizens watch them doing it? National security is an over-broad blanket that has lost all meaning.

Dear FBI,

I accidentally deleted a recipe for banna nut bread that my mom sent me on the e-mails. She says it's wicked good (I'm sure you guys can attest to that). Could you look around in your servers and forward it to me?

I wouldn't mention anything about politics being dominated by two parties, nor would I mention anything about a 20 year dynasty of the nation being ruled by 2 families. They might not have ratified the Constitution.

Bull. Note that special provisions had to be made to the documents that our founding fathers wrote to allow women and blacks to even vote, never mind the idea of them holding office.

The founding fathers would have had a hard time with the reality black men and women in positions of power. While they were forward thinking in theory, they were still a pack of rich white landowners from a cultural background that valued rich white landowners.

I find it humorous that the FBI regularly gets audited and all these funny bits come out. Like the time they couldn't wiretap anymore because they failed to pay their phone bill. Or the time they lost several thousand laptops. Or the time they lost several hundred guns.

There's something to be said about how they constantly reveal their shortcomings but don't seem to care. Oh and nobody seems to do anything about it.

And yet the people most willing to give the federal government more and more power express shock when the gov't abuses it.

FTFA:

With the flawed follow-up letters, the Counterterrorism division attempted to provide retroactive legal justification for telephone data the division had gotten on 3,860 phone numbers, gotten either through verbal requests to the companies or false emergency requests.

In his 2007 report on the FBI's use of that Patriot Act power during 2003 to 2005, Fine disclosed that officials at the counter-terrorism division had issued more than 700 emergency requests for data to telephone companies -- so-called exigent letters -- most with false promises that a court order was in the works and would be delivered after the fact.

So they had to cover up improper requests almost 4000 times? They routinely lied about getting retroactive court orders? Sounds like a organizational pattern of behavior to me, not a single, random flunky.

/Painful as it is, the Bushies just might make me start giving money to the freaking ACLU.

How do you know what they would/wouldn't have a hard time with? I believe the constitution says "all men are created equal." Maybe they honestly meant all men, or maybe they forgot to include blacks and women, or maybe they were just nieve enough to honestly think that future generations would not stop to think this excluded blacks and women b/c it does not specifically say "all men and women of every race or ethnicity are created equal". Maybe they thought it was generic enough to cover all their bases, or maybe they really didn't care. Who knows, I'd be happy to go back and ask, then correct them.
