Who hunts with assault weapons? Well, besides rednecks.

We probably had a better federal government when they had to consider the possibility of dying in a bloody revolution with all their major actions.

Not inciting anything, just sayin.

Guess in Illinois the US constitution mentions hunting in the second amendment.

/Funny. The writers of it weren't nearly as worried about that as much as a government gone wrong.

I have used an SKS to shoot over 10 deer.

FTFA (same politician, to)

"A .50-caliber weapon will completely disintegrate the target."

Talk about knowing absolutely nothing about the 2nd amendment or firearms in general...

I need my asssault rifle to shoot Illinois politicians!

You'd do a lot better if you lowered the sights a little before pulling the trigger.

Well, there's a handgun ban in Chicago and that works great. Nobody has handguns there.

Wanebo: Guess in Illinois the US constitution mentions hunting in the second amendment.

i agree with you sentiment entirely. unfortunately, this is a symptom of gun activists using hunting as an absurd argument for so long. i'm sure not all, but a good portion of the rednecks who consider themselves political because they know the names of the politicians have been saying it for years.

as you can see, it's a really weak argument that undermines the point.

Right, because you need to freely stock up on assault weapons with no registration in case you ever need to violently overthrow the government. Yeah, that'll happen. You'll band together with a ragtag band of fellow assault weapon owners and take down the US military in a glorious redneck fantasy. Freeeeeeeedoooooooooommmmmmm!

I'm waiting to see one example of a nation that has a low violent crime rate thanks to the wide proliferation of powerful firearms. Just one.

If one of last month's Northern Illinois University shooting victims had been able to carry a concealed weapon, she could have stopped the assailant, a gun-rights advocate said Tuesday.

By shooting first, before the assailant ever drew his gun? After the first few shots were fired? Does she have to be standing with the weapon ready and waiting for an assault in order to stop him after the first couple of shots? Does she always have to be the classroom guard? Can we have assigned classroom guards with guns drawn and ready for a crazed killer to come in? You'd be more likely to save more lives if there were more than one person with theirs gun ready. Maybe we should have 3 people per classroom with guns drawn and aiming at the students at all times, in case one has a gun. This would have to be a vigilant security system, any lapse would allow a gunman a chance to attack. The military is best equipped to do this, we should have them securing all of our public spaces with guns drawn. Then I'd feel safe.

Someone may still be alive right now. It's all speculation now, but a fighting chance is what we were guaranteed before the 2nd Amendment was bastardized.

R.A.Danny: Switzerland

Meh, ok, should have known there'd be one somewhere. Given their constant neutrality though, I get the idea that little country just isn't inclined to violence much whether they've got sticks or machine guns. Funny place... what with the constant neutrality yet mandatory military service (if i remember right).

I hear rumor the many tunnels the highways take through the mountains are wired with explosives so they can be brought down in the event of an invasion.

Is Switzerland really the shining example of peace plus open gun laws that organizations like the NRA hold up as an example for America though? Seems like a hell of a stretch...

The message is safety for the firearm owner in an already violent nation.

I always wonder just how many extra shootings there would be if we relaxed all gun laws and allowed almost anyone to carry? Sure, when there is a crazed gunman on the loose there would be plenty of quick return fire, but that doesn't happen often enough to arm everyone. There's a lot of nuts out there who would gladly shoot first at the slightest provocation.

/just sayin'
//yes, I like my gun.

R.A.Danny: Just because WTF does "assault rifle" really mean? I suppose you can assault tasty deer.

An "assault rifle" (from 'sturmgewehr') is a rifle capable of select fire between semi-automatic (one trigger pull, one bullet fired) and fully-automatic. It's the term "semi-automatic assault weapon" that was manufactured by the Clinton era to mean "any gun that looks scary".

It's one thing I don't like about Obama - the attitude that if a firearm isn't suitable for hunting, then it should be illegal. Give a gun-grabber a cookie and they'll want a glass of milk.

Yes, no rag-tag band of guerrillas could ever stand up to the US military. There are no examples of this in history or current affairs.

Also, in all previously observed revolutions, the military supports the existing government 100% and never fractures or helps overthrow the government.

"Allowed" shouldn't even be an issue if we are talking rights. You are "allowed" to drive, you have a right to post a blog about government corruption.

Assault rifle or not, last time I brought one in to show and tell , it caused trouble. Honestly, you ask one kid to look down the barrel to see if there's a blockage, and seconds later people are yelling about "negligence" and "safety catch was off".

You try and brighten up a classroom and they call you a killer. Unbelievable. When I get out I'm going to stick to live taxidermey demonstations for the kids.

To be fair, our murder rate is still lower than most of say South America or Southeast Asia. I'm just saying we've got bigger fish to fry here.

As an Illinois resident, I support this proposal. With proper training and background checks, most anyone should be entitled to a reasonable weapon. I also support the recent California initiative to have traceable bullets. Let's do all in our power to keep the weapons from criminals people.

I had a friend in Nevada who used an assault rifle (not sure of model) to shoot jackrabbits. But he was pretty much insane. This was the same guy who said if someone paid his plane ticket he'd go to Iran & shoot Khomenei. I believed him, but didn't have enough cash at the time.

However, it's because of people like him I don't think everyone should be armed all the time. If a car backfired in the street, Kirk was the kind of guy who would jump up and start firing in random directions till he either ran out of ammo or someone else put him down. Guns don't kill people, but they sure make it easier for crazy motherf*ckers like him to do it.

At the risk of sounding like Ted Nugent (barf)...

Assault Weapons should be legal. It's tough defending yourself with a hunting rifle in a martial law scenario. And don't think it can't happen.

/Tyrants fear armed, informed citizens
//Which is why TV and Print Media are engineered to take care of the "informed" part

And that's the kind of person who shouldn't own a gun, agreed.

The rest of us are a different story.

And before anyone says it, if I was going to compensate, I'd buy something with a barrel longer than 5".
