I chose to move back to Huntsville after stints in Tampa, Houston, and Seattle. There are many underappreciated mid-size towns out there (Spokane, Greenville SC, etc.) that fly under the radar.

While I agree that Huntsville should be on your list, Greenville should not. It was hell on earth when I lived there.

xebeche_tzu: I was visiting Huntsville in 1997. Went to a movie. Walked up to the back of a line outside the building. Some guy halfway up the queue motioned to my buddy and me to come up. He gave us cuts behind him. I turned and looked at the rest of the people behind him. All black.

He was enforcing a policy of no whites behind blacks in the line.

I thanked him and declined, returning to the back of the line. We almost got attacked.

Umm, yeah. After further review, the ruling on the field stands; I don't think this story is true.

Not to say that there isn't racism in Huntsville, because FACT: there is. But racism as blatant as what you described doesn't really fly these days. Not even in Alabama.

I was in San Francisco, and waiting in line to see Mellisa Ea Der Worf play at a coffee house, when some hippie halfway up the queue motioned to me to come up. She allowed me to stand in front of her, and gave me a rice cake to munch on. I turned around to look at the people behind me; all Republicans.

She was enforcing a policy of no vegetarians behind meat eaters in the line.

Lived there from 1997 to 2004, never saw anything like that, whatsoever. Arab, yes, Huntsville, no. I suspect you are, to be polite, "confabulating".

I came here to question this... lived in 'Bama all my life and I've never seen anything like this happen. I suppose it could have happened. There are jerks everywhere, there are bigots everywhere, and lots of people wouldn't care WHY they were getting to cut in line. They'd just do it.

Interestingly enough, I have had a person from Boston exclaim to me that she was shocked to see a couple of black people sitting at a restaurant table with some white people here in town. She claimed that she rarely saw that where she lived (I can't verify whether or not her claim was true). She thought that government-enforced segregation of restaurants was still the norm in Alabama.

This kind of crap behavior may happen on occassion, because--as I said above--jerks and bigots are everywhere. But I doubt it is as systematic as xebeche_tzu's story would seem to imply.

I think you're full of shiat.

mar19

You, sir, are full of shiat.

I cannot prove that this happened, so the point is sort of moot, but I feel compelled at being called a liar. I was a kid, 19 y/o. I was in mobile for one reason only. A friend of my mom's. She was married to a Marine colonel (soon to be a general). The woman had three daughters, the oldest of whom I was supposed to hook up with. One little problem: I was obsessed with mom. I had been since 15. Now I was a man (technically) and I had money, so I went to Mobile to seek her out. I won't use names to validate my story (tempting), but damn. Have you ever seen an athletic, brilliant, exotic looking 50 y/o mother of three? I was a determined young man. I won't tell you how it went with her. I will tell you that it was Mobile, it was 1996-7, and the movie line thing did happen. Believe it or not.

First it was Huntsville now it is Mobile... oh wait, doesn't matter your full of shiat.

While we're all piling on xebeche_tzu, I'll just add that I've lived in Huntsville 23 of my 40 years, and I have never witnessed any incident remote to what he described. Doesn't it mean it didn't happen, but if it did, it was an aberration.

Which also means that the absence of systemic racial hatred in places they "know" it exists often vexes antri-racists. It hurts the ego of the "More Anti-Racists Than Thou" crowd who desperately cling to their exaggerated sense of equality and anti-racism since it gives them a sense of moral superiority. What what Al Sharpton and such folks do without racism? They'd have nothing to feel superior about.

Most folks have it in some form. For some, it's the "More Patriotic Than Thou," for others the "More Liberal Than Thou." Maybe "More Enlightened Than Thou" or "More of a Martyr Than Thou." I'll glady concede the "More Family Values Than Thou" title.

Though, I live in Seattle now, and I gotta say, it beats the holy hell out of Bama. In every way possible, except perhaps that my friends and family still live there. But there are good people all over; I learned quick fast and in a hurry that they aren't grown exclusively in the South.

Only thing that gets me out here is the hippy crap. It's got its upsoides anditrs down sides. That, and you can't buy REAL 151, just the fake stuff.

xebeche_tzu: I will tell you that it was Mobile, it was 1996-7, and the movie line thing did happen. Believe it or not.

I don't doubt something like that happened, but you've injected your own justification for the offer of "cutting". Since you didn't take the offer you don't really know why they offered it, and since you apparently see overt racism everywhere it may have tainted your view of the event.

If your story were true as you see it, how did all the black people get to the end of the line? Did they know to show up later than white people? Or are you suggesting that one white guy gets in line in front of 100 black people and then proceeds to let every white person "cut" without any blowback?

Do you see how this story doesn't hold water? Even in 1986 I don't see how you could possibly from a human and mathematical perspective segregate a single line into "whites in front, blacks in back". Hell, if I was a white guy with black friends in the middle of your "oppressed black section" of the line I'd go goddamn ballistic if someone was letting people in line in front of me. I don't even trade people seats on a plane if they aren't offering up a similar seat because I think it's their fault if they haven't planned ahead.

Eh, the cold beats the hell out of the hot humidity of Tuscaloosa. And the "rain" people biatch about up here is barely a drizzle in Bama, rarely seen it rain hard up here. I much prefer the cold to the heat, since you can layer clothes all day long, but there's only so many you can take off :-) Though, it does suck for the two weeks out of the year it's "hot" up here, since they built most of these houses one rainy cold winter several years before AC was invented, apparently :-)

Except for the tornadoes and when the river floods, it's a spectacular place. Getting used to the tornadoes took a while, we had one the day we moved in and the day we left.

I think we might move back there when we retire, but then Pensacola is mighty nice too. Except for those damned Navy guys. (I keed)

/funny sidetrack - the P-NAS guys came to the middle school and asked "Does anyone know what Pensacola NAS is the home of?" expecting to get the answer "Blue Angels" - to which my son John properly answered "Corry Station! Force through knowledge! Hooah!"

Never went there, but we hired some undergrads from there and they weren't any better or worse than anywhere else.

Huntsville's pretty eclectic and fairly international, there's tons of people there for whom English is a second language, and in general they are post-grads or their families. I can't say we had any UAH PhD's, although I'm sure some of the SCI guys were, and maybe a few of the MSFC guys. But for the most part the guys I worked with on the Arsenal, DIA/MSIC, SMDAC and most of them at MSFC were not.

Not saying Alabama is FULL of racist assholes, but I have to back up xebeche_tzu on this one. I've run into the same racist shiat in Mobile. Girlfriend's family was trying to buy a house out there and they found a good neighborhood where they were looking to set up shop. Real estate agent said "Oh nah, you folks don't wanna live there." They asked "Why not?" To which the agent said "That's where the blacks live."

It was a pretty big shock to hear such open racism. They're probably a minority, the openly racist crowd, but they're certainly there.
