As a Bucs fan, I can confirm this. At least I don't have to wait until the regular season for my team to disappoint me.

You mean Bernard Berrian isn't worth $42 million? Unpossible.

"Unlikely?" Which of the free agents does subby think was worth the money?

Would like to have a word with Subby.

$50 Million for Tommy Kelley? Done.
$40+ Million for the corpse of Javon Walker? Done.

300 pound Quarterback? I hope so

There were very few "starters/impact" players in FA this year, most of those types were franchised by their respected teams.

Teams that signed role players for use in said roles win, because that's the best value to find in FA.. Teams that signed role players to starter money, to start, are taking the biggest gambles. But hey, that happens every year, does it not? Still too early to call "winners/losers" imo, but then again, i try to remain objective and give a "wait and see" approach rather than knee jerk sensationalism during a slow news period. Free agency is still not over, either.

/espn sucks

Pretty cool offseason so far. Favre is gone, some interesting signings, and the draft is still 5 weeks away.

I love how around Week 14/15, when it wasn't clear if the Giants would even make the playoffs, fans were calling for Coughlin's and Eli's head on a platter and lo these 9 weeks later, Coughlin and Eli are the kings of New York.

Even Los Angeles thinks that was a world class bandwagon.

Asante Samuel.

The Bills signed Kawika Mitchel, a solid 16-game starter LB from the Superbowl champions. They got him for a mere $3.5M/year. I'd call that a good deal.

I also love how Bryant Johnson's agent is trying to pimp him out to the league, waiting for some idiot to toss him a 6 year, $24M contract. No thanks. We need a receiver in Buffalo, but we'll be happy to see you again on your way back down the negotiating table. There is plenty of talent at that position coming out of this year's draft.

The Hawks are finally taking the ball out of SA's hand. That's good and fine by me.

im happy with the eagles signings.

they over paid samuel, but not so much that it will break the bank. they got a sweet roll played DE in clemons for fairly cheap.

2008-03-12 06:11:22 PM
oops, that should be role PLAYING DE

Every time TFA mentioned "UFA" (Unrestricted Free Agent), my mind would read it as "UFIA."

I love the fact that my favorite team is so stocked with talent that they don't have to sign anyone of note. They're also a comfortable amount under the cap which will be nice when they have to resign Rivers, Merriman, and McNeill next year.

/now if they could just get over the hump and win one.

I heard him on local radio (phoenix) not even a week ago, and he said something like "the NFL is a business. This could be the last contract I ever sign. It needs to be for the most money I can get. I am making a financial decision for my family."

So, as unrealistic as his expections of a max deal are, at least give the man credit for being honest and not playing the "I just want to get to the Super Bowl, and the quickest way to do that is to become a ______*" card.

SilentStrider, liquid duane-o:

I don't think you'll be disappointed with Samuel, per se, as long as you realize you overpaid for him. I'd be a tad concerned that his success was more systematic than individual- seems to happen with Pats' FA's (yeah, no real newsflash, I know). But he could be a lot of fun for you guys.

Under that premise the Chargers are winners. That doesn't compute.

Hey, remember when the Chargers used to suck and they were the ones signing other AFCW castoffs, instead of the other way around?

You guys are gonna LOVE Marlon McCree...

Close but not quite. The difference is that while New York was at odds with Eli and Coughlin, they were still selling out games.

In LA people just wouldn't go to the games at all.

living in boston, i've watched most of the pats games the past few years.

Jim Johnson's defense functions in very similar ways to the pats, only with a 4-3 rather than 3-4. i think asaunte will fit in perfectly, which is why im ok with them slightly overpaying.

What's also exciting as an eagles fan is seeing this young core of linebackers coming up together. with samuel, sheppard, brown, dawkins and mikell in the backfield, and a solid front four, anchored by cole, they could have space to run around and do damage. i also wouldnt be surprise if JJ changes it up to a 3-4 at times, or has a 4th linebacker down in a stance off the edge.

i can easily see the eagle D being one of the top 2 or 3 next year. if they stay healthy (which is the caveat anywhere in the NFL)

Do us all a favor. Quit jerking Lynch Jr. around and release him so we can pick him up.

The Browns have done fine. They had tons of cap room due to all their turnover. They aren't carrying many expensive veteran contracts. The cap keeps going up, so why not sign some players.

And as crazy as these deals look, so many are not as bad as they seem because you need to look at the guaranteed money only.

I can say that the Redskins have done awesome so far this year. The only problem is that DJ Hackett is visiting tomorrow and we are all praying that Danny takes his meds or else we'll end up with a biatch ass glass WR for 8 mil ayear.

History backs me up. Broncos are usually good. The Chargers usually suck. Thing is, when the Broncos were really good, they won titles. The Chargers right now are really good, they have choked the last 3 years.

I understand chargers 'fans' yapping. they have been bad for so long it can be exciting, and paying attention to them is new for you all. A little 'payback' after being dominated for so long is nice. My uncle lives there, has chargers season tics just to go to NFL games (broncos fan), I've been to their games plenty. Used to be empty, now full of newbies. still can't sell out a playoff game without game time charity though. Enjoy the ride.

If The New York Football Giants paid David Carr and his gloves more than 50$ they got ripped off..

I only hope Hackett doesn't have the stones to demand Brandon Loydd money, and if he does, Danny or Vinny or whoever is really in charge over there has enough sense not to give it to hom. That is a lot of hopng though.

"Minnesota, which added Bernard Berrian from the Chicago Bears at great cost, has been the only NFC team to add a receiver through the unrestricted market."

Am I wrong in thinking that the Bears signed two unrestricted free agent receivers in Marty Booker and Brandon Lloyd? Or were they not UFAs?

Oh, they have choked the last 3 years? The first loss to New England was a choke. The last loss was not a choke and you know it.

Oh, and as I remember it, your hero Mr. Elway took basically his whole career to finally get over so you can take your "holier than thou" championship attitude and stuff it. By Elway's pace, the Bolts are way ahead of the Broncos and could just as easily win the next 3 Super Bowls.

Chargers were predicted to win it all by many people the last 3 years. Choke. Elway's first 3 SB's were all over achieving teams that he one-man ganged to a SB appearance. The chargers won't easily win the next 3 because they are proven chokers. The only thing stuffed are my memories at being at 2 SB wins (one in the chargers stadium). Congratulations on being the latest version of the late 1990's Vikings.

laughable to try and fault what the Browns did. They had bona fide needs, and they plugged in those holes with surer bets than anybody they could've possibly have gotten in the draft.

building thru the draft or building thru free agency is a tired question.... there's no true answer. just go get the guys you need, however you do it.
