Captain Darling: RoxtarRyan: Why haven't we seen these kinds of protests here in America, like we see in Europe?

Well, I wouldn't go that far (new window). But I take your point, the douchebaggery is less pronounced here than in Europe.

Honestly? If I see any group within range threatening death and destruction to my country, I'd take that as a threat, and deal with it as such.

Good thing I'm a Thai Buddhist 'cause I lurve Lego bricks.

And whoever was asking about Phuket, it's not far south enough to be an issue, unless the Muslim militants decide to start bombing tourist attractions, in which case you'd be hosed. Just steer clear of Pattani and Narathiwat, et al.

Shaggy_C: Captain Darling: OK then, so when should we expect the shiat to hit the fan when all the parodies of Christianity come to the attention of the Christian populations around the world who live in such conditions? Should we expect a wave of attacks when Ugandans pick up Family Guy? Or when Egyptians Copts hear about South Park?

Why don't you go walk through South Central LA with a shirt that says 'nigers are violent bastards' and let me know how long you last.

How about you answer his question instead of throwing that red herring out?

tweekster: All it takes is a strong leader or 2 to get them rallied up. Their are millions in that position to be led like sheep if someone stepped up and used it to their advantage.

Yes, I don't disagree with this. Strong charismatic leaders - combined with a prevailing atmosphere of discontent - can cause rational people to do some pretty awful things. We can see easy examples of that in WW2 era of Europe and several periods of American history.

Xomber: They are afraid that depicting Muhammad/Mohammed will lead to idolatry?
Hmm...while technically they aren't there (lacking statues and all), isn't their attitude towards them practically worship?
I mean, for someone who's supposed to be a human being they give him way too much respect.
At least the Cosmic Jewish Zombie worshipers claim his undead ass is a god.
/gotta go do a rain dance now.

This coming from a religion that worships a farking rock

It also should be noted that depictions of Mohamed are all over any arab market but apparently that isnt a big deal..

Shaggy_C: I've lived in Spain. I know a bit about the history there. I've walked through the Andalus Jewish ghetto. There are no Jewish ghettos in the north of Spain. Why? They were thrown out of the country or murdered. So you can STFU and GTFO, ignoramus.

When the Spainish expelled the Moors into north Africa in the 11th century, they also expelled Jews and other Christian sects they didn't like.

The descendants of those Jews and Christians still can be found throughout Morocco, where they have co-existed with their fellow exiled Muslims for 1000 years.

/wish Muslims got as outraged about 9/11, 7/7, 7/11, 3/11 etc as they do about cartoons.

When CAIR actually denounces the 9/11 attack, then we will all believe that the Muslim world actually doesn't secretly support Osama.

They did, several times. As did almost all of the Muslims and mosques in America. As did most of the scholars and teachers of Islam. As did most of the Muslim world.

Links about almost all the mosques, American Muslims, scholars and teachers? The common post 9/11 Muslim rant is a paradoxical "Oh noes, the Jooooos did 9/11 to make us Muslims look bad but but but America deserved 9/11 because of its support of Israel!" And Osama is still a hero.

mrxenon: Just because you have a basic right to print crude racist cartoons doesn't mean that the racists who publish crude racist cartoon deserve applause. Either condemn these crude racist cartoons just like you do anti-semitic cartoons, or STFU.

Insofar as "Muslim" is a race (which it isn't, btw), the cartoons in that set MOST near the category of "crude" and "racist" were the ones the Imans who genned up the original outrage - resulting in world-wide deaths from rioting - FARKING MADE UP!!!! The ones that were never in the original publication - and were SO offensive to the Religion of Peace yet that practicing clergy from that faith saw no conflict with their faith in creating by themselves. And them sending copies world-wide.

If you believe the Dutch that published cartoons MILDLY critical of Islam - as it's practiced by the more extreme of it's members - are to blame for the death-larity and "Death to those who claim Islam calls for Death!" that followed - you probably also believe that the Freddie's Fashion Mart victims were to blame for their own deaths - instead of the wackos like Sharpton who CREATED a controversy by claiming falsely that the store (jooooos, you see) was to blame for a record-shop losing it's lease - instead of the black baptist church that was the actual property owner.

//BTW - how the HELL do you fail to see amy difference between cartoons saying muslims
//blow things up (true) and ones saying jews murder non-jew babies to get baby blood for
//matzos? (False, if you HAD to be so informed.) And you probably did need to, if you live in
//any one of over a dozen Muslim countries which run the second category of cartoon as normal.

2008-03-12 02:32:40 PM

Jews slaughtering canaanites = reprehensible
Muslims slaughtering Christians = reprehensible
Christians slaughtering Jews = reprehensible

In no case are you ever going to convince me that the victim deserved the massacre, despite what their religious ancestors might have done in the past.

You have forgotten the primary purpose of mainstream religion: To use God's favoritism toward your people to justify their actions. All other commands hang on this.

Oh, and don't forget:
Exodus 20:7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

2008-03-12 02:34:05 PM
mvfreeman: Just out of curiosity how many predominately muslim countries have appreciable jewish minority populations? In this century.

They were mostly thrown out when the Jews took over a swath of important religious land in the middle east and then fought a war against the muslim arabs. Things became a little less hospitable, so they left. But up until 1948, the number was about 1 million Jews scattered across the middle east in Muslim countries. Link (new window)

Captain Darling: So your answer is "never".

My answer was that violence begets violence. You'll probably get beat up and robbed in any of those places you mentioned, but it's not going to be because of a stupid episode of Family Guy. If you stand in the middle of a street burning their flag, you're probably going to find out just how tolerant they are.

2008-03-12 02:34:10 PM
Jacobin: Thankfully, we don't have any intolerant ass clowns in this country.

They need to be publicly ridiculed, spit on, and subjected to many painful paintball drive-bys.

Once their protests turn into violent bloodshed toward any and all who don't join them in their madness, then they = Islamic terrorists. I don't care what platform your spouting.

See how that works?

The purpose of the statement is to get the guy to think, for once, about something other than himself. YOUR ideals are not shared by everyone on the planet. People seem to think that if they are not offended by something, then no on else has a right to be offended. It may be silly to someone that a Jewish person would be offended by a swastika. After all, it's just a few squiggly lines. There will never be unity without understanding.

DROxINxTHExWIND: There will never be unity without understanding.

There will never be "unity", period. That's a naive idea, furthered by naive people. You try and get a feminist and some dude who wants to stone his wife to death for being seen in public with a member of the opposite gender to live next door to each other peacefully. And good luck.

Neither viewpoint may be objectively grounded or justified, but not until everyone stops having opinions and beliefs entirely will "unity" be possible. I may be able to understand someone else's anger and desire to kill me, but that's a far cry from being okay with them actually doing it.

I don't care if neither side is wrong in the eyes of objectivity, i'm not a casual, detached observer. I'm me, and thus have a considerable stake in what happens to me. I'm biased, and i think anyone who actually gives a shiat about someone else's drawings needs to get a life and find real things to worry about.

Really religion makes no sense to me. I accept it as it is, but it just makes me wonder. It's great to have a social structure that provides moral lessons and guidance, but it seems people as a whole are too hypocritical in nature to get it right.

Hey DROx, I can understand them being offended. It's how some of them express their outrage that is just a wee bit over-reactive. Jews don't typically issue death threats after they've encoutered a swastika.

Wait, what? Are they attacking Buddhists now? Just so I got my religions right, Buddhists are the peace loving folks who think any kind of violence is wrong and their goal is to attain total consciousness, right?

It's been tit-for-tat for ages now. The southern tip of Thailand borders onto Malaysia, where Muslims have much influence. Hundreds of Muslim insurgents and Thais have been killed, including innocents caught in the cross-fire. The Thais have a military presence there, not surprisingly.

Tourists are warned not to go there on their travels. It's such a shame as I think Thailand is one of the most wonderous places to visit.

Haha. What a lovely little Dr. Seussian world you inhabit, sir.

I suppose it's 100% coincidence that the three largest hotbeds of Muslim extremism happen to be coming from countries that are OCCUPIED by Western powers (Palestine, Iraq, and Afghanistan).

Of course, the biggest hotbed for Muslim extremists are your best friends and business partners, the Saudi Royal Family, who are no fans of freedom at ALL, but who enjoy your unwavering financial and miltary support.

All coincidence, nothing to see here.

Anyone that gets upset to the point of violence, or condoning violence, over an image, or words portraying some kind of magical deity figure is unstable, delusional, and should not have any right to make decisions because they've proven themselves incapable of rational thought.

This applies to any member of any ideology. It applies to sports nuts idolizing some baseball player and getting in a fight over their team losing, it applies to christians bombing abortion clinics or advocating that this be done, it applies to the baptist nut-jobs picketing the funerals of soldiers, it applies to the christians that used to stone people to death for saying the word 'jehovah', and it certainly applies to Muslims who participate in attacks or demonstrations advocating attacks on people who did nothing more than have the temerity to hold a different world view, and who weren't too scared to be public about it.

Free speech is great, and it is awesome. Free speech does not extend to people advocating violence or proselytizing murder for something as absurd as heresy.

The big difference being, We are not muslims and dont subscribe to their views of mohammed. Thrus we can draw him any way we want, if muslims dislike said drawing, they can wad up their copy and throw it away, or ignore it.

Yes, but what has it achieved in those thousands of years? The medieval world view is a self-limiting one. They won't win because they can't win. It's like Communism- they're doomed by the limitations inherent in their philosophy.

I'm not saying we should be complacent or woolen-headed, but let's face it: they're far more effective at making their lives horrible and their politics impotent than we could ever be. We don't need to help them fail.

You make a lot of sense, but I think we need to remember how this whole cartoon rage thing began. The newspaper ran the cartoon series because a Danish author was complaining that people were afraid to draw illustrations for his biography of Mohammed. As far as I know, this was an entirely serious biography and the illustrations would have been no worse than the many depictions of Mohammed that have been produced by Islamic sources. The newspaper then decided they were going to test whether European ideals of free speech really worked in practice, so they published cartoons which are certainly no worse than the parodies of Christianity you can find on Fark on any given afternoon.

My point is that these cartoons would never have been drawn if there was not already an issue of whether they could be drawn. It's not that a bunch of guys woke up one day and thought "hey, let's piss off some Muslims" for fun.
