I fukn hate widescreen. If I can have all of the action and have it cover all my screen why would I want black bars instead?

Oaksey,
Obviously you have NO idea what letterboxed movie technology is.
You are losing a minimum 15-20% of the picture shown in movie theaters when watching a movie formated to fit your home television.
Every DVD should have at least both versions IMO.

Oakey: Stop before you make yourself look like any more of an ass.

Letterbox is the only way to watch a movie (with the possible exception of the Kubrick movies). Imagine Laurence of Arabia in pan and scan only.

I can't believe these production studios would even consider doing any dvd in pan scan anymore. When they know that everyone will have to upgrade to newer tv sets come 2005 anyway. (due to the switching from analog to digital signal for tv transmittion) I hated it at first too, until I saw how much movie was chopped off. Now I don't even notice the black bars. They even show most music videos this way now!

meh, (shrug)
anyone here not really care about DVDs? Maybe I'm just sounding like that guy who said that he didn't want a VCR. But for me there's no real outstanding bonus in DVD technology that justifies the price.

Isn't there an anti-DVD movement somewher? Anyone have info?

There was an article a few months back that said that a majority of DVD buyers prefer pan/scan.

Why? Because most of the population are complete and utter jackasses!

As a result, the article said, more and more DVDs will arrive on the market only offering pan/scan.

I don't think price is that much of an issue with DVDs anymore. You can get a player (basic) for around $89 on sale that's fairly decent. Plus, DVDs don't wear out and degrade like VHS tapes do. Which is a bonus for when your kids want to watch the same movie over and over and over again (well, me too I must admit!)

My Review:

A wry and amusingly gay musical about a world famous candymaker who hides five golden tickets in candy bars for five unlucky children. Young, good-natured Charlie (Peter Ostrum) wins one of the tickets hidden amongst thousands of Wonka chocolate bars. What have Charlie and the other four kids won? A good ass raping from the factory trolls! and a tour through Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, led by the loveable, eccentric, but often mean-spirited Wonka himself. The factory itself is like a homosexual fantasy world: LSD induced crazy color schemes, wild sex rooms, secret ass raping rooms, busy oompa-loompas fondling children, and lots and lots of delectable sweets. But Wonka has a hidden agenda, and during the tour he tests each child's character, honesty, and their willingness to be ass raped. Based on Roald Dahl's children's book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Unless you have a big screen tv, widescreen is pointless. I agree the OPTION should be available, but I've found DVDs that only have the widescreen and they piss me off. When your screen is small enough as it is, that black space makes a big difference.

Up the airy Mountain,
Down the rushing Glen.
I dare not go a hunting,
For fear of little men.

Is there anyone who understands this stuff without being on acid?

Warners are weird, Americans are weird, Wonka is weird
(But I signed the petitioned because I'm weird too!)

WIDE SCREEN rules. and DVD's rule.

Have you ever watched a DVD movie on a truely nice television with a home stereo setup? It kicks the shiat out of VHS tapes and then some. maybe DVD's are a passing fad like 8 tracks, beta tape, and parachute pants, but for now they are the way to go and you have to have wide screen becuase IT is the way to go as well!

Fine people don't like widescreen, but I feel in defferance to the people who -do- like to see the enitre movie and to the filmmakers who -didnt- make this audiances dizzy by pan and scan, they should offer widescreen. It dosn't hurt you any that its offered because you can always choose not to see the widescreen on a DVD. I mean they put freaking Notting Hill on widescreen. Someone tell me how that makes more sense to offer widescreen in then WW?

I used to use a 13" commodore Monitor for movies. I still preffered widescreen. Heh.

I really wish Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was released to DVD in widescreen. It's the kindof movie you absolutley NEED to have widescreen for..

Hell farkin' yeah. I can't ait to eat a bag of mushies and watch the widescreen version of this kick-ass flick.

I can only imagine the trip it would kick-off. I'm all excited and shiat now...shoould probably calm down or something.

2001-08-08 04:26:14 AM
lol - Tox: I hear ya! imagine a widescreen full of digitally enhanced green dwarves - oompaing and loompaing as far as the eye can see - that flick would shortly thereafter be considered a class a drug.
