I wish I had a dollar for everytime I wish I had the power to unleash a "Death Blossom" when I'm driving home from work.

The Music Man was pretty good in that too.

/Watched a lot of musicals when I was young.
//Nothing wrong with that.

Shut-up Lewis, or i'm telling mom about your pornos!

This is...tangentially off topic. Remember the old original Star Wars arcade game? Did anyone have the DOS version of that game, published by Broderbund? If you were playing the game and you pressed a certain key/key combo it would take you to another screen, ostensibly so it looked like you weren't playing video games. I'm trying to remember more about the menu that it took you to, does anyone know what I'm talking about?

/I got here by reading the last starfighter wiki and then clicking through to the star wars game wiki...

..This movie is why I play always wanted to be the best at video games.

This movie was awesome, but to this day, the memory of that scene where the clone-thingy was laying in bed morphing into the kid it was replacing...gaah! Gives me chills.

Anviltongue: greatmoose: Oh man, i loved that movie. Even had the "movie book." Got an AWESOME model of the Gunstar. Friggin' heavy. Made out of solid resin. And Win.

Where did you procure such a model of such perfect awesomeness? I've found a resin kit, but I am lazy and lack skill.

I got mine several years ago from monstersinmotion.com. Was something like $150 and 10 pounds of solid PINK resin. A little cleanup and fitting, a bit of primer, and some very patient paintwork, and BLAMMO. Sweetness on a stick.

sifusalinas: "The Last Starfighter is..."

...the inspiration to my favorite move in Battlefield - The Death Blossom. Nothing like parachuting into an enemy stronghold, tossing a flashbang, and spinning around throwing grenades and emptying clips like a madman.

That's so farking funny , dude.

I have to go with "You already have an asshole, Doris. You don't need Chuck" from the same movie.

+3 internets for having Chakotay in the movie!

kennedy311: Wait, wil was in that movie? Who in the hell did HE play?

According to Wiki - "Wil Wheaton, known for his portrayal of Wesley Crusher in Star Trek: The Next Generation, had a part in the movie, but his scenes were cut. However, his name still appears in the closing credits and he can be seen as the tallest child running through the trailer park in one of the earliest scenes"

Saw this on cable just last night and was wondering why they never made a sequel to it to start with. Kind of sucks that Preston and O'Herlihy aren't around. But maybe they could talk Ian McKellan into playing Centauri.

Undecided as to whether or not I'd rather see a well done remake or a well done sequel. With the way Hollywood is run, I probably won't hold my breath for either.

2008-03-07 03:20:31 PM
my understanding is they didnt make a sequel because it wasnt nearly as successful as star wars. i believe they had originally planned for them

Dubb

In stead of a sequel, it should just be remade. And then have a sequel.

Could work, but you might get the wrong kind of crowd if you called the remake The Penultimate Starfighter.

I actually just watched this last night. The graphics don't hold up very well, but it was still very enjoyable

oxxymoron: Pocket Ninja: oxxymoron: The games didn't train starfighters. They identified them.

Maybe they identified some innate talent...but it was basically a simulation so there had to be some training going on, too. In any case, the same question stands. They can build the ships and spread video games across the galaxy, but can't find talented pilots within their own population?

Sure, some training. But only record breakers got the callup.

And I think you have it backwards. They couldn't find enough starfighters in their ranks so they built the games to spread across the galaxy.

Cameron_Talley: It's been a long time since I've seen the film, but wasn't the video game thing a one-off by Centauri?

This is correct. The tool was openly a recruiting mechanism on all other planets. Designed to test a life form's capacity for becoming a great Starfighter pilot. Centauri went off the reservation disguising it as a video game and putting it on a non space-faring world. He took some flak for that when the higher-ups found out, too.

"They can build the ships and spread video games across the galaxy, but can't find talented pilots within their own population?"

Also, the above isn't a valid point. The League that conrolled the starfighters was an alliance of planets. So placing testers on member planets is, in fact, recruiting from their own population.

Well, "Hey think tank! Think on this!" is right up there, as well as "Going to visit Santa Claus", but no one could really argue with that one as the best.

Much thanks for the info. Due to the aforementioned lack of skill, I will probably wait and hope for a pre-assembled and pre-painted setup.

Im a little sad no one quoted the coolest scene in the movie....

Bad mook to head bad guy "we're caught in the moons gravitational pull...we'll be sucked in...what do we do, what do we do??!?!"

Bad leader activates his head-mounted sigthy thing "WWhhhiiirrrr"
"We Die"

Sweet resignation....

// Blackey, I've got a mission for you...

The death blossom was "supposed" to work but in reality was just as likely to blow up the Gunstar. He barely made it out alive when he used it. Had he not had every target in range and not blown up when he activated it, he'd be a sitting duck as he had to wait for all his systems to come back up.

So "pushing a button" and have it being the greatest weapon is simplifying the issue.

I would love to see a remake of the Last Starfighter, but mixed with Alan Dean Foster's "A Call to Arms." In the book, humans are found to be the fastest, most powerful sentient species in the galaxy. Moreover, humans are the only species psychologically adapted to warfare. The aliens end up hiring humans as mercenaries to fight wars for them. It would explain why the aliens in the film have such a hard time piloting their own starfighters.

I can clearly remember the day my dad dropped me off at the AMC theater and I saw 'The Last Starfighter' - greatest movie ever - however since that movie had the best graphics for it's day, the next one needs to therefore up the ante. It will be pretty difficult since we are already accustomed to life-like CG with dynamic surfaces - things the original artists could only have dreamed of.

Zur escaped, so obviously that will be the protagonist

//Maybe they can make a real starfighter recruitment game and use it in the movie as the recruiting tool, but also have it fully functional for release onto consoles and maybe a kick-ass motion simulator ride. Would have to clean up the puke after each Death Blossom though....

Protagonist, Antagonist,, I can't tell the difference these days

BTW, they sure do play that soundtrack alot on the XM Cinemagic channel,, since I have my own disc I can play it whenever I want, like when running from the po-po
