I'm late to the party guys but I brought Twinkies, Cool Ranch Doritos, and two 3 liter bottles of Coke (remember those?)! We'll miss you Gary! Thanks for all the good times and a little piece of the world that was OURS, at least from 1am-7am. Great times! Rest in Peace.

Thanks for all the fun you've given me.

Thank you, Gary. You made the lives of over-protected children everywhere little more bearable.

The geek weed-out joke among guys that I work with is that it's not a wedding band I'm wearing, it's a +5 Cursed Ring of Fellatio Resistance. The ones falling on the floor peeing themselves are the ones I call 'brother'.

shouldn't that be -5? ;-)
I call mine the ring of protection since I'm a spaz and smack my hand on things all the time but most of the time the ring saves my hand from damage

darkyn: I think that says it all. I've played a lot of games, but AD&D will always be "home."

Thanks Gary, you provided me endless hours of late night entertainment, imaginary adventures, and nerdy brotherhood. You made me a smarter person, your game gave me a better vocabulary and math skills than I would have gotten on my own.
I think I might have a little leather pouch with some colored multi-sided dice around here somewhere...wanna build up some characters and go on a campaign?

GameSpy: Last question. I hope this doesn't sound morbid, but what would you like to have written on your tombstone? How do you want the world to remember you?

Gygax: I was gonna say, "Better here than Philadelphia," but I think somebody already did that. [Laughs] I would like the world to remember me as the guy who really enjoyed playing games and sharing his knowledge and his fun pastimes with everybody else.

I'll definitely miss him. A few of my favourite D&D moments:

1) Create a D&D "Nuke". Basically take 8 Staff of the Magi, wrap them up with a bunch of Necklace of Missiles, cap both ends with Helm of Briliance. Then break the Staffs. *BOOM*! And pray you get the 5% teleport to another dimension.

2) My DM created a bunch of funny cursed items. One was an axe of throwing that on a critical hit, got stuck in the monster and didn't return to you. Another was an evil diamond dust covered bow string, that when you pulled the string back, cut off your fingers!

3) Went to a D&D con and played through a tournament. There was a super old school 1ed DM that was rolling god damn 1d10+1d6 for his d20s. He did this for a carrion crawler encounter which took forever to roll all his attacks every round! I eventually just gathered up my d20s and said "HERE! ROLL THESE!" For some odd reason I did not advance to the next round :P

As another female player/DM, I'm very saddened. While I've had great times on both sides of the DM Screen, none of it could have happened without GG. His imagination brought others to life and opened entire worlds of thought to my generation.

Thanks, Uber DM, for teaching me so many things and giving my friends and me hours, days, months and years of fun!

Thumbed through some of the old 2nd Ed. stuff with his name on it last night while sipping some single malt distilled in 1987. Found character sheets I haven't written on in over 20 years, and fondly remembered the days when the only bills due were the ones you paid to your henchmen.

Any advice for a fledgling DMistress? I'm running a dungeon crawl on the 22nd, 4 guys, 1 girl, and me as DM, and would love some insight.

Tales from a campaign:

Was playing a 2nd ed campaign with 2 other girls (DM a guy). My mage had looted a spellbook containing Nahal's Reckless Dweomer and only that spell - repeatedly (DM let us use spellbooks as scrolls). Being new to 1st/2nd and not knowing the spell in 3rd, all I knew was that you had to roll percentile for the effect (the DM stated later on that you could have a spell intended, I said it's more interesting if a random effect happens). So our party is captured by a mage hunter. We're in a prison cart, he's following on his horse, and takes out this spellbook, interrogating my character. She's telling him not to read it, and he tears a page out of the book. Rolled effect, something bad. Our characters are laughing, mine begging him not to do it, it would be bad (she's laughing, he thought she was crying). He then turns the book towards my character as he goes to rip another page out, thinking the bad stuff will happen to her by doing this. I ask DM "Do I have clear line of sight? Can I see what's on the page?" He says yes, so I say "I'm casting what I see". BOOM, flash of light, everyone blinded for a moment, his horse dead and him smoking & a bit toasty. The DM had rolled up to be Lightning Bolt which nearly killed the NPC. Good times.

Well, she is a harpist, so maybe some bardic remove curse spell could help...

From what I recall, the erotic RPG had it's Open Gaming License recalled due to objections over the subject matter. Plus if there ever was a game for LARPing, EF would be it.

NYRBill shouldn't that be -5? ;-)

Well, I kinda saw it that, as a gift from the wife, it augmented her saves, not mine. Ergo it was cursed. I dunno, you had to go and get all technical on me, and here I am, feeling silly now for getting all bent out of shape like when they threw out THAC0 in the 3rd edition rules.

that is some curse, never heard of an object that helps others save, but she did give it to you. I never saw the point of THAC0. I can look it up on the chart just as fast since few things actually HAD an AC of 0 so you were adding and subtracting away in either case.
/I was a big fan of d10 initiative, to me it makes more sense
//we also had a chart for where missile hit and adjusted damage accordingly
///and used dex bonuses to adjust them as well

Rule 1. Have fun. If you're not having fun, don't be a DM any more because it's not worth the effort.
Rule 2. Don't take yourself too seriously. Make sure everyone else is having fun too.
Rule 3. Understand the rules. Know the rules. Be the rules.
Rule 4. If Rule 3 interferes with Rule 1 and 2, throw it out.

/Rulemongers suck. Fun uber alles.

I will never forget what it was like to play my first game, I was six years old and my babysitter (infinitely cooler than I can ever hope to be) dragged me and my sister over to his house. His parents were home and said that a few of his friends were over sitting in the living room, all I heard was random talking. He went in the room and said, rather sadly, that he couldn't play, he was watching us.

I walked into the living room and saw something my ultra-religious mother would have crucified me for, (she watched the 700 Club... understand, now?) Dungeons and Dragons.
"Hey, can I play?" Was my first question. Luckily being four-and-a-half feet tall was a good thing for once. (Instead of having to have my parents drag around a picture I.D. that said I was under 10 so I could actually get on the (horribly, horribly cramped) rides at Pistol Pete's Pizza.) (Las Vegas, next to the Pic N' Save off Lamb... In 1989)

"Sure. Roll up a character."
"How?"

The next four hours were the most eye-opening experience I have ever had. I didn't just want to play the game, I wanted to run it, and run it well. It made me want to build things. It made me want to think with my entire brain about how to kill the lucky, skillful bastards. (Currently including a 1st level Fighter named "Jedekai" after the root-word for justice in Old Danish. Yes, I still have the name, thank you very much.)

It made me want to believe that in some form, in some facet, I had the powers of God. Satan. Odin. Quetzocoatl. Asmodeus. (TYPED NOT SAID!) Lolth. That I was the savior of Krynn. That I severed the head of a dragon with a vorpal sword at 18th level.

But, in some small way, made me realize that even the most treacherous, worthless arsehole might, somewhere, have a small piece of good that hadn't been bought out by money and power.

It made me belive that "good" was more than just a fairy tale.
It made me belive that Good existed, you just had to find it in yourself.
