Long live Steve Jackson and TFT! :D

/Glad I got to hear and applaud Mr. Gygax at an Origins Awards.
//Props to The Man. There'd have been no TFT without DND and its perceived flaws as inspiration.
///Maybe no GURPS either.

samimgreen: tothekor: I've been frantically looking for confirmation on this but no legitimate news outlet has anything on Gary's death. Just this message board link which I trust only as far as I can throw it.

Can someone point me to a legit new agency reporting this?

Sniffle (new window)

Wisconsin? They're losing Favre and Gygax? Can you imagine the bars. Two men drinking to their sorrows, the bully and the geek weep together.

Thank you... I'm of to pour a rather large glass of whisky right now.

D&D lead me to LARPing, which lead me to the love of my life.

Nerds really are better lovers... and as I've come to realize, they tend to be better people in general.

Gygax rules, if only for giving smart nerd kids a shortcut to meeting other smart nerd kids.

RIP.

I am very saddened by this. RIP Gary.

I'm glad I got to meet him last summer, and to shake the hand of the man who started it all.

Thanks

all4not: Ok, I am looking for some help here.

I have played video games that are somewhat similar to D&D (Planescape, Baldurs Gate, etc....) but never played actual pen and paper D&D. My kids are old enough that they would like it to.

But, how do I start? Any good websites or books to point me in the right direction?

You are just in time for the new edition of D&D (new window) to be released this June.

I'll never forget playing Magic: The Gathering with some random teenager in the lobby of a hotel at the last GenCon that was in Milwaukee. I asked the kid if he'd ever played D&D and right at that moment, Gary Gygax walks up to our table and asks this kid if he's going to join him for dinner. The kid said no, and Gary walked away. Turned out that I was playing Magic with Gary's son. Then he said something like, "Yeah, I've played D&D a couple times." I felt really stupid. He was a nice kid though.

Some forum and a Wikipedia[citation really needed this time damnit!] page doesn't cut it for me...

But when I find anything on his death on Google News, I will raise a glass.

In the meantime, someone get some sticks, leaves, mud, clay and oils worth at least 1,000gp!

It just popped up on Cnet.

I knew Gary a little. I grew up in Lake Geneva, and my mom's friend at the time worked at TSR. I distinctly remember their black-and-yellow sign, of a living cave getting ready to eat some adventurers, over the storefront of what is mow Mackinack Island Fudge.

Gary was always a good guy. He used to come and see my old band once in awhile. I once asked him if he ever had occasion to sort of stand back and "admire his work", so to speak...If he ever was able to contemplate the far-reaching influence of his life's endeavors. I mean, without him, there'd be no Magic: The Gathering, no Pokemon, no World of Warcraft, no Everquest...No RPG's at all, electronic, tabletop, or otherwise. And his response was, "I'm just really flattered that people were interested in playing things I made, an the way I liked to play them." Very, very low-key, cool guy. He'll be missed.

Played from 1976 until I got too busy with real life. Man, that first set is more than 30 years old now. I think I've still got the dice around somewhere...

Well crap!
I spent many a college weekend in the mid-late '70s playing D&D and laying out maps and painting little lead figures and drinking cheap beer. Somewhere in storage, my little wizard and plastic dice are mourning.

Zork, Doom, Myst, Quake, Halo, Half-Life... They're all great, but they don't have the tangible memories that D&N brought.

I think this statement is attributable to Marilyn Manson:

"You know how they say that each cigarette you smoke reduces your life span by seven minutes? Well, every game of Dungeons & Dragons you play extends your virginity by two weeks..."

High School Nerd or not?
- big D&D / Car Wars player
- concert band/choir
- AP Physics, Computer Science
but...
- big FOOTBALL player
- had hot GIRLFRIEND and SEX!
- played lots of Zep & Hendrix on guitar
- schmoozed with the burnouts and Deadheads

now...
- Mac IT guy
but... I play bass in a rock&roll band, dammit!

Just find a local hobby shop, the guys working there are almost always friendly and eager to help someone new learn about the game (read: spend money on modules, dice, and books). For D&D all you really need if you're brand new is a player's handbook, a DM manual, a set of dice, some paper and pencils, and an imagination. If you've played Baldur's Gate (Planescape is a different animal altogether), you'll be familiar with die rolls, stats and all that. However I believe Baldur's Gate was based on 2nd Edition Rules and the current edition is the 3rd. There are some serious differences, so read up and get playing!

In 1980 through 1981, After 3 tries our party of 5, 4 PC's & 1 NPC, finally finished module S1 (Tomb of Horrors) that our DM Greg had successfully Modded to be even more playable and deadly.

Bleeding around a campfire with maybe 6HP total between us, we were roasting one of our pack animals for food when the DM rolled for a rando encounter. Out of the brush an Umber Hulk wandered up to our campfire, took the roasting food, spit and all, and sat down and started eating. The DM's NPC who we all thought was a very stupid Druid said "This is my Umber Hulk friend, let's walk away and leave him alone while he eats." We left immediately very confused about what had just happened. We later learned the NPC was just a thief who successfully stole all he could carry from us, and that the Umber Hulk was really a random monster.

Thanks DM Greg, Jay, Rob & Peter. Chris.

RIP Gary, no more saving throws needed where you are now.

Gary narrates the Delera's Tomb quest in DDO: Stormreach (Dungeons and Dragons Online). That quest was the reason I turned off DM narration (let's face it, his voice is not exactly "thrilling" nor even close to voice actor quality). Looks like I'll be logging on, turning DM narration back on, and re-deading a few undead.

RIP Mr. Gygax, and thanks.
