I spent a few years living in that area, and it's amazing to see how far its fallen since I was a kid. Utter shambles.

Then again, this was before EVERYTHING was so built up in Jacksonville that you can't even spit for a strip mall. (Of course, even then you could just projectile vomit and hit a strip mall.)

FTA:
"They are targeting people who are not paying attention. They're not paying attention to what's going on around them. They're walking from their car to their apartment, talking on their cell phone, looking in their purse," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Melissa Bujeda said.

Which goes to show that the number one thing you can do to avoid being a victim is to farking look around! It's shocking how many people are walking around with barely enough awareness of their surroundings to avoid walking into doors, let alone avoid a gang of muggers.

It's almost like people are starting to think it's rude to notice that there are other people around or something. No eye contact. No awareness of body language. No seeing what people are holding in their hands.

This is the sherrif's way of punishing Jacksonville for cutting his exorbitant budget. Always blaming the budget for the amount of crime.
Even when they had the extra millions, it was the same story.

The crime is being comitted in a small section of the city and they can't stop it. In broad daylight.

I submitted this for Zach, who is in Baghdad...where, he says, it's safer than Jax...

I used to live across the street highway from that warzone, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies...

This is the Sherrif's Department giving back to its community the same attitude it GETS from the black community. The locals keep looking the other way and won't intercede in their black-on-black crime, so why the hell should he? this part of town has been a disaster for over 30 years; what makes it crazy, is that it has once again rivalled Springfield, Eastside, and now even Riverside for sheer ballsiness of crime.

kelisu: Cool. My boss is going to J-ville tomorrow.

Unless he works for Jenkins' BBQ on Emerson, or the Wal*Mart on Phillips, I doubt he has anything to worry about. Sorry to ruin your day.

Depends on what part of town you are in; Jacksonvile has the same kind of walled enclaves that Baghdad has, only they were built by white flight, not soldiers.

Bottom line: drugs fuel this "war" in town, and they always have. 20 years ago, you did not dare go near the Emerson Arms apartments if you were any color, especially white, even during the day; the cops would NEVER go there, and autofire could be heard there every night. Murder a night, guaranteed. Past few years, it's been cleaned up quite a lot, but the overall neighborhood defies gentrification, and the slide continues.

Hell, the Fraud Lion on Emerson St. closed after 20 years of business; I guess food assistance cards, WIC, and Welfare don't pay like they used to. Amazingly, most of the titty bars stay open--- they must pay the girls in Crystal Meth or something, because there sure as hell isn't any money to be had anywhere near that neighborhood, even as San Marco continues to wall itself in against the creep of decay.

You know it is getting bad when the "Richers" abandon waterfront property, because it is too close to the war zone.

When did you live here, 1974? because for the past 30, that has been the Bermuda Triangle of Socialist Wealth redistribution; nothing that enters, survives.

Speaking of guns, please take note that these robberies are not confined to the dirt poor North-Eastern border of that area, but they go into the rich, river-home dwelling areas where the wealthy, gun-hating Liberals congregate: I.E., easy targets! Notice that the south border stops where the gun-owning, middle class Libertarians and Republicans tend to congregate, in Mandarin (South of Sunbeam.) On the other side of the river, near some of the worst areas for "roving gangs" of car thieves and daylight robbers (ignored by the above Tabloid 12 "news" article,) the Rich Republicans of the Avondale area remain robbery free... I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that they tend to be armed to the teeth? Nah, that couldn't possibly be it.

I am at work, 200 yards from the "warzone". Stopped to get gas in that area (actually a little North of there) one time as I was moving here from Tallahassee. I didn't feel too comfortable. Doesn't look like too bad of an area as I go to get groceries, etc. during my lunch hour.

I'm so proud to be from there. Except the part where I'm not.

Up until now I have lived in Jacksonville my entire life. Where I went to middle school if we heard a car backfire we would hit the floor. A family friend was robbed while waiting in line to pick up her kid from school. A friend's sister was murdered in her apartment by a 17 year old guy impersonating a cop because she wouldn't go on a date with him. I could go on and on about stories like this but I'll spare you guys because I'm nice like that. Or something.

And the thing is, when you live there and watch the news everyday you just figure this kind of crap is going on everywhere. But no, Florida (especially Jacksonville) is a special brand of crazy. And what is the main concern of the cops there? Speeding and teenagers with marijuana. Blargh.

My GF used to work with that girl, she just told me about it yesterday since the trial just started. Very sad since that young lady had a great life going...

My office is at the corner of Philip's and Emerson and my GF teaches at an elementary school just around the corner. We both are very careful to be out of here when the sun goes down. Looks like even that won't help all that much anymore...

Yeah, her family was devastated by it. It happened right before our senior trip to NYC and her brother was just a mess. This kind of thing just makes me sick.

Jacksonville isn't bad at all...

IN THE RIGHT AREAS. Just stay out of the Northside & Orange Park. Anywhere south of Atlantic BLVD, east of Phillips Highway, and North of Butler BLVD is fine with me. I love it here.

/Used to live in Mississippi. You want a war zone? Go to downtown Jackson & Vicksburg.

I pass by that school, Pineforest Elem. everyday to go to work in the neighborhood at the end of the street. I know how you feel about being cautious around the area. There are groups of thugs just standing around the area at all times of day. Gotta pay attention

Starting to.

They should rename the north side HUD Town. The state pays the thugs to live there. Since they get free housing, education (with free meals), and medical getting a job is out of the question.

I personaly enjoy watching the evening news. The first 15 mins dedicated to HUD thugs killing each other. Each kill equals one less tax payer burden. Keep up the good work.

Hmm, did anyone mention how this wouldn't happen if the victims were allowed to carry around fully automatic assault weapons?
