Dinjiin sorry to hear about that. I'm sure you know early b5 Audis and early b6's tend to have many reliability issues. I should have been more specific with my list. Overall, I think nothing drives like a German car, but if I were to list in order of reliability, Asian would win by a long stretch, you're absolutely correct. However, I'm more of a car tuner and track driver, and German cars take the win here.. unless you're talking about going simply in a straight line (nascar or drag racing).

I also have a b5 Audi, has 62k miles and has been excellent so far. I never take my car to an Audi Dealership, unless it's under warranty because it's very obvious they rip you off and charge you out the ass. $110 an hour is their rate. I know better mechanics that charge $60 an hour. Besides, I do most of my work myself, and the work I have done was by choice to improve the performance (ie, new turbo, sway bars, suspension etc..) The only things that needed to be replaced so far was a breather hose ($15) and now an o2 sensor or a vacuum leak.. haven't really diagnosed that one yet.

I'm sure you'll have great luck with your Lexus, as many people do, but they just don't fit my needs, well.. not right now anyway,

rustyload: Dropped my P.O.S. off at the valet station once. The valet told me to keep my tip because he thought I needed it more than he did.

/Didn't help.
//Still drive a pos.

I don't even have a P.O.S.; I have to admire yours.

Also, you'd save a lot of money sourcing the parts yourself, because besides Audi's ridiculous rates, they also mark up prices like they're saving up to buy a country.

worked valet for a year while finishing undergrad. what's worse than joyrides are minor collisions that go untold by the valet

True. Never happened much where I worked, but it did happen rarely. Also, we had more customers trying to scam the valet (fully insured) for incidents that, they may not have caused, but were definitely not caused by the valet. We'd survey most cars before even driving off in them, then survey again when parking. We also have cameras many places. Yet many people would file a claim saying we damaged something. We've had people who pulled up to the line, the car would stay there all day because it was a slow day, have them call down for the car.. when they arrive they'd notice a big crack on their window or something and blame it on valet, who never even touched the car.

Ladies and gentlemen, you are such a wonderful crowd, we'd like to play a little tune for you. It's one of my personal favorites and I'd like to dedicate it to a young man who doesn't think he's seen anything good today - Cameron Frye, this one's for you.

Dinjiin: Hendrix: German cars > Asian > Domestic

I have a '98.5 A4 that ate its transmission, water pump, camshaft seals and crankshaft position sensor (leading it to suck a valve). Oh, the tape player plays in reverse (devil music FTW!), opening the moonroof occasionally sets off the car alarm and the driver's side airbag module was defective. Three of the five dealerships I took it were were utter arseholes. Loaner car? Hahah. Car rental shop is two blocks over. Have a nice walk.

This over the life of 60K miles. Total cost of repairs: over $18K

I also have a '05 Lexus IS-300. The check engine light went off once because I didn't screw the gas cap on tight enough. The Lexus service department reset the computer, detailed the car, and gave me a big plate of Krispy Kreme donuts while I waited. Every Lexus dealership I've ever been to has been fast, professional and had a loaner car ready to go.

It now has 50K miles, 6K of which was towing with a U-Haul trailer behind it (two trips, over three mtn ranges each time). Total cost of repairs: $0.

/I'll never buy a Krautmobile again.
//Ever.

sorry to hear that, but i'm not surprised. bmw's are far more reliable than audis (save the dodgy 7-series). don't count out all german cars because your audi was a lemon.

Do not give keys to valets. if they crack up your car, your insurance won't cover it. They, on the other hand, will stone wall you and not pay even if you sue - call your lawyer - go ahead! Don't take my work for it - call your insurer and lawyer and ask! Please do! Valets are crooks.

FlashHarry bmw's are far more reliable than audis (

At one point, I would definitely agree, but Audi's have become equal if not arguably surpassing (with the b7) BMW in terms of reliability, starting with the late b6 models. However, both are excellent car companies and I'd gladly own an Porsche, Audi or BMW and nothing else. Again, I think the only thing Asian car makers have going for them is reliability, while the German car makers are catching up, they've got the Asians beat in every other category, except for cost/resale value. Domestics have a long way to go, coming out with something decent once every decade.

/2 cents.

Not true at all. the company i worked for was fully insured and had a mock investigation in claims.. and paid out rather easily, especially if the valet failed to survey the car. You may have had a bad experience, but that doesn't mean you can go around spouting b.s. - though I do agree, I would never give a valet or most people the keys to my car.

My friend learned to drive stick at his valet job during college on an amazing car, I think a really really nice Mercedes. They spent about an hour teaching him on it, and probably wore out the clutch terribly. That made me decide to never give a stick shift I owned to someone else to park.

I used to park cars at a restaurant. If you had a sweet set of wheels we took it for a little ride. Never burned rubber though. I have some scruples. I actually drove quite responsibliy so as not to attract the attention of the police. I didn't think that they would have liked knowing that I was a valet with only a learners permit.

See this? *This* is my *boom stick*! The 12-gauge double-barreled Remington. S-Mart's top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about $109.95. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. *You got that*?

Because contrary to popular belief, Canada is NOT the 51st state. It is, in fact, a foreign nation.
