Its always funny how the military and intelligence agencies always miss the powerful subliminal codes, backwards messages, etc that control us from birth. I guess game developers are just a lot more clever.

I just love their english in the article.
2001-08-06 03:30:06 PM
Wow...I love how ignorant people can be...
Then again I'm only denying the article's valdity because I've been controlled by Doom2 since i was 13...
2001-08-06 03:34:50 PM
they were no good camping llama newbie rail-whores anyway...
2001-08-06 03:35:14 PM
there was some code signal recorded on the CD game - the signal which made the guys kill themselves.

2001-08-06 03:39:48 PM
You know why they did it? Because they kept fighting those Giants in that hallway of the Earth cave. I always got stuck there earning money and buying weapons before going on in the game. They got stuck in a loop of fighting, healing, and buying, a common tactic in playing Final Fantasy RPG's.

But the note about video games becoming a sport is neat.
2001-08-06 03:49:39 PM
Hmmm, drinking irradiated milk, losing all your friends to old NATO landmines, living and horrible poverty ... and have you seen russian women?

no wonder they are all killing themselves.

Hmmm... Bad news. It sounds like Russia is beginning to inch ahead of us in the No-Life Geek Wars. I thought we had nailed this down when that mouth-breathing D&D clown offed himself when his character died back in the mid-eighties.

Now they come back with six dead from FF... Escalation, clearly. I don't suppose we could find a group of Dragonball Z fans that would be willing to enter into a suicide pact soon...

let's hope everyone who beat every atari 2600 porn game in existence blows their farking brains out.
2001-08-06 04:20:42 PM
You know, even for Pravda, this article is pretty poor. I just can't understand how Russia was ever a superpower when this was their mouthpiece.
2001-08-06 04:22:41 PM
Or maybe they killed themselves because the guy that made those games made a movie which was so mediorce, it permentatley damaged the fabric of the space-time continuim
2001-08-06 04:33:01 PM
Sgamer - They had atari 2600 porn games?!!! I MISSED THIS?!

Of course I was like 4 when I had my Atari 2600, but still, I missed this? That blows.
2001-08-06 04:38:58 PM
I played an Atari porn game.. it was called 'Custer' or something like that. You were, well, Custer, and you had to walk across the screen, dodging arrows, to fark an Indian woman tied to a stake. Something like that.. really weird. Pity the poor fools that became sexually aroused playing this game. Sad...

If you want, you can still get an emulator and the ROM image off the Net somewhere.
2001-08-06 04:39:22 PM
Have tentative, this article to read made my brain melt.

(engling->german->french->english, for some reason babel doesnt have an english->russian but it does have russian->english)
2001-08-06 04:42:16 PM
No worries Perigee, because this also was written down in the article:

Computer games were given the sports status. Moreover, the Ministry for Education included computer games in school education program. Computer games will be studied at physical training classes.

Sounds OK to me..
2001-08-06 04:53:14 PM
"Custer's Revenge" to be precise. Interesting how the article says they killed themselves after playing "The final fantasy". There's no word "The" in any of the eleven games Final Fantasy games Square has made, and just which one was it? And when you consider that Final Fantasy 7 sold over 11 million copies, you gotta wonder why it is that "the signal that made the guys kill themselves" was only picked up by 6 people (8 and 9 are the only other CD Final Fantasies they have so far, and each has sold at least a couplemillion copies).

btw, not a huge video game freak, just like FF games.
2001-08-06 04:57:41 PM
I have never seen a video game where the on-screen character tells you to kill yourself. Maybe I just haven't played enough FF games. Of course, the biggest mistake we've made is the decision to arm video games; that's why they're killing our teenagers.

Think how much money we wasted on the cold war nuclear arms race, when we could have just put Reagan in a moogle suit and wiped them off the face of the planet.

2001-08-06 05:13:45 PM
if I could have played video games instead of PE, I might have already realized my dream of weighing 500 pounds.
2001-08-06 05:17:28 PM
I think they killed themselves because they finally realized they were living in Russia. I'd probably do the same.
2001-08-06 05:27:51 PM
Batcar: Definitely. I think it's a little more likely that people might be killing themselves because they are living in a terrible situation. It must really suck to be well educated, yet live in a country that is falling to Third World status faster than an Iraqi plane during Desert Storm.
2001-08-06 05:38:27 PM
FRKBOY: Unless they inserted that signal into the re-release of the SNES Final Fantasy games...

Or maybe it was Final Fantasys' ugly sibling, Final Fantasy Tactics. I could see how that could drive someone to kill themselves...

Ya know, for someone who hates the playstation and could care less about square, I know too much about the games.

I need a nap.
2001-08-06 06:45:07 PM
This concept was abandoned some time ago actually. Marketing research clearly shows adding subliminal suicide signals, or "SSS(TM)" as it's known in the industry, has a negative impact on future sales.

You've got to be shiatting me.

I wondered when Jack Chick would move into attacking Final Fantasy.

LordBob-I respectfully disagree. Final Fantasy Tactics, to put it simply, is gold.
2001-08-06 08:00:39 PM

If it were Tribes they were playing, it woulda been

they were no good camping llama newbie chainwhore anyway.
2001-08-06 08:36:17 PM
I'm not picking a fight, I just honestly wonder what about FF: Tactics you liked?

I might actually have to back and play that game again now too... I mean, I recently discovered that Metal Gear doesn't suck as hard as I first thought... In fact, any game where you can strap C4 on someone is ok in my book...
2001-08-06 08:39:14 PM
wait, but, what was it about the game that made them kill themselves??
2001-08-06 08:49:52 PM
"OMFG Aerith is DEAD! Get your nooses on the double!"
2001-08-06 09:02:25 PM
I like playing the FF games, and regularly kill myself as well. I get better.
2001-08-06 09:36:31 PM
Maybe the six kids thought Russia was making clones of people ala Shinra in FF7. Thus, they got sad and committed suicide. It is more logical than anything in the article!
2001-08-06 09:52:32 PM
Yeah, the loss of Aeris hit me pretty hard too........
2001-08-06 10:28:02 PM
I would have waited for the movie before killing myself.
2001-08-06 10:47:39 PM
LordBob-The game has a very high learning curve. It took me half the game to master it. But, in actuality, I found that GOOD. I *want* my money's worth, and this was a game that both entertains me yet doesn't dissolve into pathetic easiness after you figure it out in one hour (i.e., Final Fantasy 3).

The Graphics are a little dated, but the music is excellent and the storyline still enthralls me today. Who else but Japan would have the nerve to make a game about the corrupt church's inquisition?

For all those interested in knowing more about Custer's Revenge:
2001-08-07 01:23:41 AM
OMG! Someone else finally knows about "Custer's Revenge!" Hey, Mystique made a lot of other questionable games... I'd recommend anyone to download a ROM of "Beat Em And Eat Em" or "Knight On The Town." has all those ROMs plus ROMs from credible classics. Stella is a great Atari 2600 emulator. Anyway, when I first came across this games I was laughing my farking ass off!!!!!! Download em!
2001-08-07 02:00:09 AM
FF Tactics was OK, but I hated the stiflingly linear progression. That and there was way too much goddamn talking between fights. If they'd have let you skip through all the dialogue I might have stayed with it.
2001-08-07 03:56:39 AM
you can get all of the atari 2600 porn games you want just about anywhere
get em in rom packs
and then get an emulator (also very very easy)

if you beat all of them, so help me god, i will shoot you.
2600 porn is horrible.

if you want a porn game, get MAME and Poker Ladies! :D
beat that one a few times myself ;)
2001-08-07 05:01:42 AM
fark no. Don't be dissin' Tactics.

2001-08-07 06:35:16 AM
Damn straight, plaid.
2001-08-07 06:35:37 AM
i got killed by a video game once. i don't think this is very funny.
2001-08-07 07:18:57 AM
The guys probably killed themselves due to the fact that the call of the chocobos is "wark", which is dangerously close to fark, and they misheard the birds and thought they were saying fark, which ment there is a God,(seeing how only God would allow such a great site to be mentioned in a game), so they offed themselves to be with him. Sadly, they're rotting in hell.
