$400,000? I'm no real estate expert, but isn't that a bargain for the Upper East Side?

Fark It: $400,000? I'm no real estate expert, but isn't that a bargain for the Upper East Side?

Well, not for the closet. If you want access to the room that the closet is attached to, then obviously the price goes up significantly.

There goes my plan of building a cabin of bagels and living off the grid.

2008-02-28 01:03:47 PM
Dunks are a buck a bagel, and their bagels suck. I'd happily pay a dollar for a real NYC bagel.

Yes - unless subby was inferring that the crappy parts of Forest Hills are the way upper, far east side... he's just wrong.

I seem to recall a $1000 bagel at some hotel in Times Square.

You whiny New Yorkers should be happy you get bagels at all!

The only good bagel is a toasted one with locks & cream cheese served off the back of a hot wimens

Mareike Wegener, a 24-year-old New School student, said he usually eats a bagel for lunch because it's a cheap and filling meal, but the higher prices are causing him to reconsider.

"I don't have a lot of money," he said, "so every bit makes a difference."

Jeesus H Christ, if you can't afford one dollar for lunch you've got a real problem living in New York. What food could you switch to that will be cheaper?

I rented a closet on the Upper East Side and have to share it with Tom Cruise, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Ramen. You can get a dozen for $1.99 at Western Beef.

Except that most "New Yorkers" are from CT, NJ, and Long Island. So the people complaining aren't necessarily the same ones shelling out that money for the closet.

/$400K for the Upper East Side? Has subby ever been to New York?

2008-02-28 01:41:50 PM
Until you learn how to spell lox, you can't have any.

2008-02-28 01:42:23 PM
And they sit and complain to each other about it while drinking $8 Starbucks frappo-homo-chino-whatchamacallit drinks with traces of coffee in them?

2008-02-28 01:43:12 PM
Simple solution, don't eat bagels.

I guess you have wireless in the closet? How is John?

shiftypickles: 400k is a 555 square foot box in Vancouver.

Man when i was in Vancouver (I think it was a year ago, may have been two) you guys had highrises sprouting like weeds. And good weed too....

/Lives on the upper west side, should have bought 6 years ago when I had a slight chance of affording it, unlike now.

2008-02-28 01:43:38 PM
So what do I get for five dollars?

/bagel long time?

2008-02-28 01:44:00 PM
$400k here buys you anything from a 2,000 sqft house with character in the restaurant/art gallery district of town to a 3,500 sqft wannabe mcmansion in the nice, not completely distant suburbs to a mansion with a moat or something like that in the fringe fringe exurbs.

I'm sure the cost of diesel, oil derived pesticides, natural gas based fertilizers (which is most commercial fertilizers), and the general cost of energy being higher, has nothing to do with it either. It's all about the cost of energy.

That must be a pretty secure bagel. I prefer mine with lox...

//no, not really

i guess bagels would be easier to afford if gas wasn't so expensive

jerry2a: /$400K for the Upper East Side? Has subby ever been to New York?

Here ya go. (new window) 600 Sq. ft +/- (probably minus), looks from the pictures to be on the 4th floor of a 5-floor walkup, but hey, it's only a couple blocks to the train and the original Papaya King, so there's that.

It is Lox eh?

/first to admit I can't spell worth shiat

A dollah for a bagel? Does it come with lox? Is that extra?

it feels like everybody in manhattan is some ex-sorority girl marketing analyst or teacher from ohio living in a palace on daddy's dime.

the people I've met who grew up local are the ones who seem to be doing it for themselves.

bagels are for fat-asses

How broke are these people that 1 dollar is breaking their wallet.

2008-02-28 01:51:50 PM
Great analogy subby.

In other news, parents - who have obviously had sex at least once - don't want their 5-year olds to be sexually active.

Well, after the population exodus of the 1970's, the growing population has to be coming from somewhere.

Shiat is getting out of hand in NYC these days. A slice of pizza with minimal toppings cost me $5.50 the other night. I was drunk, so I got it... but it annoyed me.

2008-02-28 01:54:05 PM
A dollar for a real bagel?

Sounds like a bargain.

You know, you can't get a good bagel in Germany.

2008-02-28 01:55:34 PM
Wait, you know where i can get an apartment on the upper east for 400k? I'll be there with 20% down in 15 minutes.

LineNoise: Wait, you know where i can get an apartment on the upper east for 400k? I'll be there with 20% down in 15 minutes.

Dude, why would you want to live on the UES??

2008-02-28 02:01:33 PM
Oh Jeez, stop it. I have friends who have places on the UES who paid under $400K for large Studios and small 1 bedrooms. Yes, you are closer to East End & York and far from the 4/5/6, but still. I used to live on 79th and York and it was fine. Now I am in Chelsea and the prices there are much worse.

Damn, Ill still go to Russ & Daughters on Houston and pay $10 for a good bagel with belly lox.

No-- that's the price for a Cleveland steamer followed by a donkey punch.

it's $1 for a bagel.

Hell, they're a buck here in Boston, at least at the joint in the big office building, and with the cream cheese it tops 2 bucks. Ridiculous. I dont mind a buck for a bagel, but thats just larcenous with the c.c.
